I have ASC, I was diagnosed at 7 years old. The main signs my mum noticed were lack of eye contact and special interests as a toddler, but as I got older she realised that what she thought were tantrums were actually meltdowns. Unfortunately I had almost no support in school. I'm 18 now and have masked my autism to the point where it is impossible to notice, when people find out I'm autistic they are always very surprised. I'm great at communicating now, understand social rules, don't have special interests anymore, but I still struggle a lot, it is exhausting to mask and the struggles don't disappear just because you don't appear to be autistic. I'm working as a TA in a reception class now which is why I watched this video, it's really important that children get the right support as early as possible. It makes life so much easier! I am really glad I was diagnosed at a young age, it really helped me to understand myself and find tools to cope more easily. Thank you for this video, it was very informative and definitely accurate- autism is not a one-size fits all :)

Thanks for the video. For a 5yo child with development delays who’s not non verbal but not functionally talking and does qualify for special needs classes due to communication and level of maturity. What does a good education look like for them in mainstream? How many hours of support?

Hi! Great question. The amount of hours and what those hours involve is completely individual to the child. Of course, we always want the most hours possible because we want the most support possible! The hours might include 1:1 support, but they can also look a bit different. The money might be used for additional resources, extra staff member, equipment... there are a lot of possibilities but it is really dependant on each child's individual needs.

Hi Claudia, it really does depend on the type/amount of support needed, the school and the child. It certainly isn’t an easy decision. It can be helpful to visit both beforehand to help make that choice.
