Stimming or self-stimulatory behaviour by definition can be a repetitive autism behaviour for autistic people which involves repetitive movements or sounds. Autistic people of all ages stim, autistic kids stim, autistic adults stim to some degree.
Examples of stimming include biting fingernails, hair twirling, cracking knuckles, drumming your fingers, whistling. Autism stimming is typically more repetitive and noticeable in comparison with rocking, autistic flap hands, bouncing, jumping, walking on tiptoes, repetitive blinking, rearranging objects as some autistic stimming examples.
These types of autism stimming are a fraction of the different autistic stims that there are out there but stimming in its nature is a way for autistic people to self-sooth when feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated (hypersensitive). Sometimes it's to create sensory stimulus due to being understimulated (hyposensitive). Stimming could be due to sensory issues so autistic people might stim due to it being a stimming behavior.
These are really broad explanations to why autistic people have stimming behaviours. Stimming is not exclusive to autism as it appears in those with ADHD, Aspergers, anxiety etc as well as neurotypicals/non-autistics.

I've heard it is an output to handle all the input we're receiving too. Information overload or sensory overload. Or like a pressure release. I hope that makes sense. I do it a lot when I'm anxious, stressed or bored. I love hand fidgets like tangles or tactile stuff like a spiky hedgehog ball. I'll just play with my fingers or give myself a hand massage if theres nothing to play with. When I was little I was obsessed with swings and rockers. Even now I like swings. I'd love to get one for the garden.

I had a root canal yesterday. I had previously seen the particular dentist (I don't recall the specific term for him) and discussed the fact that I'm autistic because it makes it difficult for me to keep on top of brushing. I thought I would be OK with my headphones in and music playing but I was starting to get anxious. I ended up using my phone (because my mouth was full of stuff!) to tell them I was feeling anxious and requested the lead apron. He understood almost immediately and they grabbed it and put it on me without hesitation. He also said to remind them at my next appointment so they can put it on me before they get started. It was a bit scary at first asking for it but I'm glad I did! I was too scared to start wiggling my foot or anything considering it would shake the whole chair.

I think that some stimming can be helpful for them. I know I stim but sometimes don't know I'm doing it as well. My stimming can be pacing, rocking, hand movements, repeating things or saying things randomly without thinking (I have randomly said football scores which have turned out to be true for a match with my team before) and I just have a general need to be busy so must be doing 'something'.
@IndieAndy

Ooh yeah I forgot about the randomly saying stuff... That's something I do. I tend to say things I've seen off TV ads or the music from those ads... Random but really cool 👍 But yeah I think that stimming is for me a way to keep my mind active/engaged.

Love this video and how you explain that everybody stims in his or her own way :-) I cannot stand or sit still and always shift my weight. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Usually, I cover it up with movements that are considered more normal like straightening my jumper, running my fingers through my hair, but always shifting a bit while doing that. I guess you can see it if you know what you are looking for. Other times, I cannot be bothered to cover it up. This is when I get comments like "Can't you stand still? You're making me nervous..." But hey ;-)

Keenly, IndieAndy, because I had autism, and I heard stimming from other people with autism, let me tell you what it means - Stimming is a way for one who has autism to deal with any change in normalcy or a routine that could cause that person to melt down before that person has the meltdown. I call stims something like checking imbalances in emotions and try to equate the balances with usually a long, monotonal hum, and long monotonal hums are just one famous variant of stimming. Stimming also is often used when the autistic hears a loud buzzing noise that causes that person to try to imitate that buzzing sound with a hum that tries to match it (for example, a basketball buzzer or a buzz of a bee).

sometimes I kind of just sit there flapping my hands/ twisting my wrists in a very extravagant way for no reason and I don't realize it until it gets pointed out, Its just a natural thing I guess us autistics do to feel a sense of security and stimming really doesn't need any of the negative stigma it gets :)

I scratch my scalp many times a day and I feel ashamed of it, but it makes me relaxed and I also do it when I have anxiety, to be relieved. It often need to rinse my nails after doing it. I try to stop doing that because it makes my hair more greasy and since I have a quite sensitive scalp, I shouldn't wash my hair more than once a week. And another reason I have wanted to stop doing it is because I've never understood exactly what it is and why I'm doing it. I've never told anyone about my habit, but people near me may have noticed I'm doing it. My mom is very much aware that I have autism and she has it herself, but we have never, what I can remember anyway, talked about stimming, never. OCD and perfectionism, yes, but that's not it. She have questioned why I'm doing it and that makes me more ashamed of it. She has felt I think a bit disgusted about that.

Any vids on toys for my 2 year old would-be awesome? I tried buy him chewy toy but he rather chew his dummy or his bottle or anything else 🤷🤣 he doesn't want to play with his sensory toys I bought 🤦 he rather slam doors and climb allover everything and he's obsessed hey bear sensory lullaby and when it ends he gets so upset 😢 xx

I'd give it time personally and leave it near him so he knows it there. Because obviously his 2 so it'll take time for him to get to use them but definitely using them would be best.

It is a bad thing because it annoys other people I'm afraid. Especially the people who don't know you. That's just the sad truth.
