Things in the year 2020 have been difficult for most people and with our kids and autism, it's no exception for us. We are working through things, but how long can this last?

Give the book printed out, 1 chapter at a time. Do not give him that thick book all at once. REWARD EACH SMALL SUCCESS to encourage his earnest attempts at completion of the thick book. It is like trying to eat a giant cake at a piece at a time but the sight of the whole cake causes great anxiety.

Also, hug him when he's frustrated from trying. That's if he allows you to. When my autistic grandson gets frustrated, he bumps his head into me and I hug his head. Doesn't always work but when it does, we both feel better.

@@winterdream5710 they ignore him and even admit to allowing him to talk to himself stemming in his room for hours.. and they see that as "allowing him freedom to express himself" while most of us can obviously tell they are the reason he is suffering.

@@Blackafternoon nooo, I don't think it's that way at all. Their son is a teen and even though he's autistic, he still has teen ways like ranting and wanting to be left alone for a bit. They know better than I do. My statement was more of what I would do in the situation which could or could not work. Dealing with teens is hard; an autistic teen can be more of a challenge. Overall, I think they're good parents trying their best.

Often, I feel I can relate to those on the spectrum. Depending on the severity - they can be so stressed out and from what I gather from some statements Ian made (which is my nephews name), he knows he's stressed and overwhelmed but nothing he's doing is calming him and doesn't know why. I struggle with severe depression, self deletion thoughts and some paranoia and when it flares, I feel the same way. Nothing I do helps, no talking to somebody helps. That in itself compounds the stress and agitation because we don't know why it's happening and why nothing is helping. At 45 as of today, I sometimes think these experiences, as frustrating and difficult as they are, have helped make me stronger in a sense. I recently watched the video of him on his most recent birthday. He's grown so much. I hope his own experiences with this has helped and will even more in the future, be stronger. You definitely have some great kids.

I'm autistic, and I've also gotten upset about similar things to bad reading comprehension (though not specificly that). When I was younger I didn't feel like an actual person because of how rare it was for me to relate to anyone. Ian's opinion on being autistic is the exact same as mine. I was diagnosed with CMT (Charcot Marie Tooth disease) about a year ago, and a doctor theorized that my autistic traits are all symptoms of it. I'm wondering if Ian might have a similar condition that can be treated, because what I heard in your videos make me think he might.

His parents arent ignoring him or being disrespectful. They understand hes upset and having a meltdown obviously. They know he can calm down on his own from this one so they are chosing to let him do that. He isn't having a severe meltdown or hurting anyone so they see no reason to intervene or possibly make him more upset. They're doing very good and keeping Alister occupied and away from Ian so he won't stress out more. Please try not to assume things unless you are educated, know from experience or are also on the spectrum like me.

It really saddens me that you filmed your child at one of his worst moments and uploaded it to the internet for the world to see. He deserves better than this. I have two children with autism and although I'm not a perfect parent, I could never do something this bad to my child. It is your job to keep his dignity to the best of your ability. This is not doing that. I just came upon this video... The first video I've seen from your channel and I'm already turned away. Im not saying you're bad people or bad parents but maybe shut the camera off when your children are suffering and not at their greatest moments.

Imagine filming your child while they are so distressed and panicked. This is so exploitative its awful. You state he "gave his consent" ; children will always want to please their parents and he undoubtedly felt pressured into allowing this to be posted. Furthermore, as a child, he doesn't yet understand the implications of it. Rather than comfort him, you whip out your phone to film him in the middle of a time when he needs support and calm and comfort? As parents it is our responsibility to do the right thing by our children. They can not consent as they are children. This is so distressing to watch.
