never run a IO without water, instant destroys the water pump in the outdrive. Gets some muffs and connect to a hose to supply water when running on the hard.

It's a good boat. I have same model. Led lights on rear are trailering lights. Regal has harness plug which goes into receptacle on bow. This eliminates lights on trailer which get submerged all the time causing problems. Volvo outdrives DO NOT have water pumps in outdrive as do Mercruisers. The water pump is engine driven off crankshaft on front of engine. Running engine even for a few seconds without water WILL MOST DEFINITELY cook the rubber impeller in the pump. Use only a Volvo impeller kit (around 40 bucks) as aftermarket ones are much less reliable. Impeller should be changed every 2 years. Once they're overheated or run dry ....pieces can break off and clog cooling systems. They usually wind up in the thermostat housing. That Fastrac stepped hull design creates lift to get boat on plane much faster than standard hull design. Volvo outdrive is generally bulletproof and shifts extremely smoothly due to cone clutch design. Make sure oil in drive is clean and full to proper level on dipstick. Engine is a standard GM block made for marine use with brass freezeplugs.

Need to check the two manifolds and risers...they rust after time and need replacing...will affect engine cooling. Also the water pump implella might need replacing. Heaps of you tube videos on this stuff for volvo boat engines

The main issue is always to check the water cooling outstream this will give you a sign if the water cooling (pump impeller check in and outline water lines) is working. This is always a check before running your engine.
@TheRustyCracker3 жыл бұрын
Had same issue with our gm engine in our auction boat, there was a lot Of corrosion inside the cooling passage ways in the engine. Almost blew ours up lol

In the future you should never start a marine engine without muff's. While not running. Hook them up and let the water circulate for a while and feel the large exhaust port's for coolness they'll sweat and if one side is warmer than the other you may have a blockage. If both feel cool then start the engine and watch the out drive look for a solid stream of water to come out when the starts. If you don't have that stream then the impeller is toast. It takes less than a few seconds to ruin a dry old impeller I've replaced many of those in my time. It's a pain in the butt,but it's not rocket science 😁
@marcussnow63433 жыл бұрын
The led lights on the transom are trailering brake and turn signals the plug is on the bow and you have to connect it to your trailer lights.
@mikesmith80903 жыл бұрын
Those Fastrac Fins may be to help turn the boat better as they help to cut into a hold the water in sharp turns.. Just a guess as older Tri Hull boats had longer ones. They could also help to cut through waves and keep the boat more stable in rougher water. Never start any boat motor without the lower unit wearing earmuffs/Water muffs to send cold water to the engine as the damage caused by ''No water'' is fast and absolute to the impeller which is made out of rubber guy's.. Not to mention costly$$. Stereos in boats are also built a tad differently than autos because of the roughness of the ride the boat goes through. A regular car stereo will work but possibly not last as long, IMHO. I was a avid boater in my day. Lastly if you had a stainless steel prop the boats top end/speed and power out of the hole would improve by quite a bit but if you hit underwater obstruction it can wreck a lower unit/outdrive easily. Good luck. Nice boat.

There's a pretty good chance that the rubber water pump impeller disintegrated and a piece of it is stuck in the water jacket or exhaust manifold. Replace impeller and blow out the manifolds and water jackets.

There is also a water flap leading up the exhaust riser that only lets water out but not back in. That flap might be broken, stuck, or just bad. Bottom line is pull off both risers to see how they looks, so you don't get water inside the engine......

Yea you probably burned up the Impeller housing. This is why you need to use muffs on land first. I am pretty sure that is the issue. Cheap fix ( impeller) and that should be checked every 1-2 years. Cheap replacement and that outdrive is much easier than an Alpha. Good luck.

Never, never ever run a marine motor without having water circulating through it - I've seen some dimwits do it and blow their engines - a real daaaaa moment for them and expensive. That water pump needs water running through it or you can also kiss that impeller goodbye.

Although Regal boats are not super high quality boats 2 good things that i did see are 1 the boat being from Tennesee is a positive thing that indicates the boat was used in fresh water and 2 those numbers on the transom Port side indicate the boat was stored in a Boatel style Marina that usually means it was stored inside and most likely the former owners had money so those owners usually hire tProfessionals or have the Dealerships do all the service that’s a good size boat for family outings and fun great for Wakeboarding Waterskiing , and Tubing the Volvo Penta running gear should be a reliable power plant with more than enough power ! best of luck with it BTW Regal is perhaps not the top of the line in its class but it’s not a terrible one to have either with the Ethanolgas these days in my boats i just have the Carburetors rebuilt every off season it saves you a lot of grief in the long run similar to you replacing the wires hopefully that’s one less tow i think the Pump that Michael noticed was the Power Steering Pump although i will admit i have not had Volvo Pentas in over 30 years as they have been Mercruiser inboard outboards

Don't even turn your motor over even for a quick test without water attached, most people reason that the motor won't overheat and that's true but you Will damage your raw water pump either in the outdrive or engine mount, even for a few seconds without water it needs constant water present to not ruin the rubber impeller.

Regal is a good boat made in Orlando. Just don’t run it in salt water. Should be a pigtail in the bow that plugs in to trailer pigtail to operate those stern taillights while towing. The Fastrac hull turns on a dime.

have similar engine possible the manifolds are risers are badly corroded these need changing around every 4-5 years in salt water also change the impeller this is the item you were not sure on. also check the bellows an the lower unit gear oil for water
@ozer19802 жыл бұрын
When you started it couple times without water you burned up the impeller. That's why it's overheating and the smoke is your exhaust boots melting. Hopefully your exhaust bellow is not toast. Definitely time for impeller job and check the exhaust boots, may look fine from outside but I bet the inner parts are melted. All could have been avoided if you had water during start up 😭

It blows me away that people dont run their new to them boats out of water and make sure its pumping water. Even if it is pumping water then you should replace the impeller just for good measure. You should run it until it reaches operating temp to make sure there are no old rotting hoses, leaks, stuck thermostat... i just towed someone back to the marina the other day cause the same thing. Cloud of smoke cause it was melting all the rubber in the exhaust system

Well you had one of the two best days of owning a boat, the day you buy it and the day you sell it!! You can never run any boat motor with out ear muffs, you destroy the lower water pump impeller which need to be changed every few years anyhow. Also they probably didn't winterize it right, you could have a cracked block or exhaust manifold. Now on to the second best day of owning a boat, selling it!!
