We lived and worked on our 1987 44 DeFever for 14 years. Its an awesome boat, no doubt. Ours wasn't nearly as bad as the one you are looking at. It took the better part of a decade though to get her into the condition I wanted and that was doing the work myself.... in FL. The two dealbreakers on a DeFever are the fuel and water tanks. If they are leaking (which they probably are) then its trash. It costs way too much to replace/repair those. Those Lehman engines are great, no worries there. Join our DeFever club and you will have access to a wealth of knowledge. Good luck!!

I mean this to be in the most kind of way…Do you want to spend the next 12-24 months of your lives restoring a boat? You seem to really enjoy exploring & this boat will take your summer and fall at minimum, & a couple years to get it in shape out of your youth-spoken from older travelers-it needs lots of repairs that will insert a catheter right into your bank account. Defever are great trawlers no doubt, we almost bought one as well. The question is, do you want to spend the extensive time and money to do it up and, what will it be worth in the end. It will be sunk cost. I don’t think from what we’ve seen, you can put enough lipstick on the pig. Run away! Enjoy experiences doing fun things like you have been. Too many boating vlogs doing boat repairs & restoration already as well. FWIW.

For $100, and a bit of cleaning, you could easily have a place to live and have some fun while waiting for the new boat. Just don't go too crazy with the upgrades and repairs and you can unload it for what you have into it (or better) when it's time to get the new cat.

Firstly you have to look at it from a totally different angle, don't think of it as buying a seaworthy vessel. I would like to think of it like buying a campervan first.....an old campervan is valued at much more than that. Convert it to a liveable space and if time and resources permits than make it seaworthy. Haul it to a hard inexpensive location if required. I certainly would buy that if I don't have a home.

So I am a SF Bay/Calif Delta 30' boat owner. BUT my first question is how long until your new cat is supposed to be delivered(and be sure to add 3-6 months)? If it is still a year out then I would encourage you to go for it from an adventure standpoint. There are plenty of smaller marinas in the bay/delta area that will let you work on the hard. A slip is gonna run from $400 to $1000/mo. Not sure about boat yard rent. Surfing in Santa Cruz, Fleetweek in SF, diving in Monterey(brrrr), and a long trip to the Channel islands. Tons of history and national or state parks. Avoid SF mooring and move up into lower cost of Vallejo, Benicia, Pittsburg areas for repairs. Tons of marina and parts. BUT ONLY IF you are quite a ways out of the Seawind. It will be a huge amount of work.

First, do you need a place to live and a job? There is no doubt that you have the experience and the savings to take on this project. But isn't there another boat, the Seawind 1160 also asking to use those saving's? Generally, only a boatyard dreamer (and there are many of those) would even consider a project like this and they don't usually have the money, but that's the nature of a dreamer. You are not dreamers. BTW, what is the 1160's delivery date as it sits right now? At what point are they in the building process? I can't wait for the next episode of, "Have Billy & Sierra Lost Their Minds? Or will they refit a broken-down Defever?" Love you guys, good luck with this one.

Interesting , Thank You. I personally want it , but as a practical matter I think that it would be to much money ,time and ambition . To me the biggest questions , is the hull sound , are the engines , fuel system functional . Good Luck
@MikeBanks20032 жыл бұрын
Hell YES--as long as there are no liens on it. De Fever made good gear--the engines will be your concern--and you can sail it through the Panama if you have to. Clean fuel tanks or replace them with saddle tanks--buy 'em from truck wreckers--some trucks use stainless ones.--the old fuel will probably need to be removed and stored--then filtered if you intend to use it again before putting it into the tank. I would not consider the North West Passage unless you really like to take risks. I think the engines will be OK after shaking them, loose--pull injectors and pour a little diesel into each cylinder. After it soaks for a day or so, try to move the flywheel. Motor vessels cost a BOMB in diesel to run-- but with luck you will not lose money.
@quarlow12152 жыл бұрын
My thoughts on your poll are that you need to look at your timeline to getting the new boat, the fact that it's so far away from your home base, and you know as well as anybody that you'll end up deeper into repairs than you calculate. I know you have the knowledge and ambition but I would personally pass on it. If it was here in my area that would be different as I know my resources here as do you on the east coast. But either way you go I'll be watching.

It is lovely to see many positive comments about how you guys will do a great job fixing that boat.... but let's leave the fantasy, unicorns, and pixie dust behind and talk reality... it could cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars to get that boat back in shape, and that is if you do almost everything yourselves. Get a grip and find a boat that is within your budget and within your ability to fix.
@scottfortune90162 жыл бұрын
Personally, I see a beautiful old boat with tons of potential. Get those tanks checked ASAP. You can get a scope pretty cheaply to look inside it, and around it in areas you can't see normally. Under it, etc. Check into pricing on new tanks if needed. And engine rebuilds if you're not able to do it yourself. After that, if the bones are good, then you're golden. How much you redo or rebuild is up to you, your budget, and time on hand.

@ Around 3:10 the narrator is talking about " Going Through the boat " ! The 1st., thing you check is " The Engine ": As in " The Fuel Tank " ! Check ALL The Other Fluids Also ! Check All the Wiring ! ( Pluming excetra ) ! Even Get a " Boat Maintenance " book and follow the " Prescribed Procedures " !

Lots of pluses and minuses. The location is certainly a minus. SF Bay is an expensive place to keep a 43' boat while you get it running and there are not a lot of places to cruise to. On the other hand, once you get it running reliably you could move it to Puget Sound. That is pretty much an ideal boat to cruise the northwest and also head up the BC coat to Alaska. It would be an adventure moving the boat north though. Location things to check include: does the slip transfer? If not you will be looking for a new slip which could be stressful, expensive and require the boat to move. Few marinas will accept a boat that doesn't come in under its own power. Can you afford to keep the boat in SF Bay? The bay is a high rent district. Also there is the insurance issue. Can you get insurance for the boat. Old trawlers can be hard to insure and you will have a very hard time finding a marina to keep it in without insurance. As I am sure you know, the BIG things about buying an old trawler are the engines/transmissions and the fuel system. Either can be VERY expensive to repair/replace. You can do a temporary fix on the fuel system, but removing and replacing rusty tanks is a big deal. The engines are the biggest issue. If they run and have decent compression you are likely good to go - for a while depending on how many hours the engines have. Billy can deal with a dead transmission (remember Neverland). The leaks/rot in the house are an issue, but you can deal with them more or less at your leisure after you take care of the engines/fuel system. I would want to see the refrigeration working, but you can just buy a refrigerated cooler or two for the short term. If the engines run and the trannys are good, the biggest risk I see is getting stuck with an old boat that is expensive to keep. I could see you putting $15K-$20K to get the boat operational and livable and then not being able to sell it except at a loss when you are ready to move on.- It will be a LOT of work. So to reiterate the big issues are: 1) Is the slip transferable and what will the cost be? 2) Can you get the boat insured? That is likely going to require a haulout, which means the boat has to move on its own. 3) DO the engines run and are they in good enough condition that they won't die soon. 4) Is the fuel system OK enough to run the boat at least to a haulout and/or to a new slip. You can always rig temporary poly tanks for short runs, but the long run likely means new tanks. I would check all of the above and I would look in the fuel tanks to see what they look like inside. The boat looks like either a great opportunity or 43', expensive white elephant.

Make a list of what you know has to be done. Make a worst case estimate on how much time you need. See the budget you think you need to do the job. Multiply all by, at minimum, a factor 2. Then you come to the most optimistic estimate of what is ahead of you. Ask your self if you are willing to go for that endeavour with your partner and bring all ups and downs here as episodes. The viewers want you to overcome whatever is possible for you. When your positivity and love for each other shines, then you will get the support you need.

I love watching boat rehab projects and know you guys will do an awesome job (although this one looks to be about as daunting as there is!!!). I've followed Dangar Marine (kzbin.info) for the last several years - he is a great guy that restored a (small) steel trawler just north of Sydney, Australia. Highly instructional videos, and he has the requisite sense of humor to deal with the many frustrations that come with such projects. Wishing you much success and looking forward to amazing content!

Jetty reminds me of our baby Chloe we lost in April. She was such a great girl and our buddy. Man, I miss her!
