I am still waiting/hoping for a supported autofocus motor, that the S511 would drive directly (from the phase detect). So you get the autofocus on all those vintage & anamorphic lenses. How cool would that be.

@@geoffreybassett6741 forget the motor, just an open control protocol would do it, like use the flash port or hotshoe or whatever. Tilta/SmallHD/DJI would make/reprogram motors overnight probably.

The S5II and the S5IIX still uses the same sensor (at least a variation of that same sensor) as the original S5, S1 and S1H used which is a Sony sensor, specifically the IMX410, so it was phase detect ready all along but before they just didn't take advantage of it. What the Leica + Panasonic L2 partnership brought to the new cameras is the new L2 Image Engine (the processor) which is what enables 6K internally, 3:2 open gate, zoom in to check focus while recording, faster burst mode in photography, ALL-I codecs in the X version etc. It's still the same sensor though, that doesn't seem to have hasn't changed.

The fact that the specs of the sensor are exactly the same like that it's a 24.2mp BSI sensor and that the dynamic range in IMATESTs are also exactly the same seems to back that up. There are some slight variations of the IMX410 though, can be a slightly different sensor but essentially it's the same, at least from what i can tell and what i've been told.

Oh please please please try the Sirui 35mm 1.6X in the open gate mode on this camera! I’m so curious if that combo could be a viable option for filming interviews in tight-ish spaces while still getting a bit of somewhat oval background blur.

I agree with the all intra I don’t see what the point is if you ultimately want the best quality shoot RAW. The M1 & M2 chips breeze through long GOP clips

interesting take, does the S5 II does touch to track focus in video mode like how Sony does it? Weirdly enough, I've seen people having issues with the PDAF doesn't work as intended when shooting in 60fps.

Thank you for another great video. Why do you think Anamorphic is better on 6K Open gate more than C4K? can't use it in C4K? I am new to this, I got 2 sirui 35mm and 100mm 1.6X and tried on C4K and it looked good to me. Thank you for your time and answer.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the open gate options on the full frame Lumix cameras (S1H, BS1H, and now S5ii) already maxed out height-wise, we just get a little extra on the sides? The gh6 can do 4:3 because that’s the inherent shape of its sensor where as on the full frame cameras mentioned above, they have a 3:2 sensor size.

Yes, you get a 3:2 full height full width image on open gate. While most recording modes and other cameras will give you a 16:9 full width but not full height video recording area.

Hi - thanks for this review - I'm trying to figure out if this would be a good b-cam for me, A Cam is a Mavo Edge 8k, as best as I can tell the S5IIX has Anamorphic mode only for APS and not FF, but it can record 3:2 FF @up to 30FPS and I just would have to live with the squeeze in the EVF and Outputs. Is that right ?

I don't think any time soon, but I'd like to be proven wrong. The art of focusing anamorphics is quite complex for an automatic system, unfortunately.

I tried the S5II out last Saturday. Its auto focus worked great. My only reservation was the rear screen was a bit small and underwhelming compared to my Nikon rear screen. I'm trying to figure if I can deal with that, its only 6mm on the diagonal but even the image seems crunched on it, I often show clients images and clips, so this is a worry.

Counterpoint. Exclusively use all-i. It edits so much better than long-gop, especially when rapidly scrubbing. Most especially with 4:2:2 color, as h.265 4:2:2 has scant hardware decode support. All-i is larger, yes, but storage is cheap. Waiting for the S1H 2 with phase detect.

I'm just generating proxies and optimized media for editing, which defeats the purpose of ALL-I being lighter on the CPU/GPU. :)

@@AnamorphicChannel Agree, proxies are a good solution. But all-i means never having to generate proxies. Downside is that more storage space and faster record media are necessary, so it is more expensive. But can offer faster workflows.

One thing I find always distracting with AF for KZbin is the "jumping". Not talking about Panasonic specifically, also with Sony cameras. I never notice it in faces, I guess because motionblur might help here, or because faces are more forgiving? Anyway, where it's so obvious is bokeh. And when there's a lot of pronounced bokeh in the background (which is very popular on YT, huh), it's very pronounced and very distracting. That must be my T-Rex senses. Panasonic does seem to do a good job here, or at least on par with the rest. Regarding the sensor, as far as I understood it's the very same as in the original S5. So same restrictions, DR and rolling shutter. Regarding the full height 4:3, it would likely still only do 30fps. The issue is the amount of lines (top to bottom) that need to get read, so cropping sides doesn't help. That's directly connected to rolling shutter as well, because it's an indication of how fast the sensor can be read. So if it's the same as in the S5/S1H, it's not faster. Also playing the devil's advocate here: I still think they settled for Academy to get a good ratio of sensor height versus rolling shutter. As anamorphic amplifies RS around the factor of the used stretch, it's fair to try to hide the downsides here, haha

Yeah, I super notice focus jumping on bokeh as well, and I kept a look at that in this video (you can clearly see it happen on the two times I slide back). Same everything as the original S5 except autofocus and a better engine (which doesn't affect the sensor per se). Ah! That is really good to know about the readout. Thank you for expanding on it. Same for the academy choice opposed to S35 open gate. Rolling shutter is the downside of scope. Amazing! hahahaha :P

There are a ton of videos testing AF in 4k or 6k format but none in full HD. So this video is just another one that confirms all those 679 videos wich says the same thing. Pleeeeeeeease, just make a video testing AF, image quality and IBIS in full HD 50fps. It's really that difficult to understand that are a lot of enthusiast filmmakers who doesn't have expensive gear to edit 4k image and shoots in full HD and are interested to see if this camera is suitable for them? 🤷‍♂

You don't need expensive gear to edit it. Macs with m1 helps. And 4k quality will be better even with crop. However If you shoot FHD only, it's not worth to get s5ii until they add pdaf to 50/60p. FF

For photo and video EF lenses work great. There's one minor problem with shutter while taking photos. With EF lenses and Sigma MC21 shutter sounds like you set it very slow even if it's 1/200 or 1/500 sec. Photos look normal and overall shutter works well but it's sounds very different compared to native lenses.
