I go with the Auto Tune Up "job" from the PennySaver!
Since I had already left McDonalds. I was getting desperate little by little for money. I'm not making money anymore. So OFF TO THE PENNYSAVER I GO! Going back to those misleading ads. Since the assembling products thing was a "hoax" to me. I was now looking at the only other ad that looked interesting to me. It was the ad for a job as a Tune Up tech. The ad that says: Auto Tune Up - Earn $400 a week. NO EXPERIENCE needed if willing to train.
SO, when I was looking at that. I was thinking it was going to actually be an AUTOMOTIVE GARAGE that is WILLING to train me ON THE JOB! Made me think. An auto mechanic in a garage actually is WILLING to give me a job even if I know nothing about cars?? And having seen this ad up for quite some time. Makes me wonder, it looks like there's plenty of openings for that job! AD LOOKS VERY PROMISING! So I decided to GIVE IT A GO. After all, working on cars looks sort of interesting to me. WHY NOT! I need a job anyway!
I call up that number. I hear "Security Pacific"?? Whhaaa? Is that the name of that tune up shop?? Well they just led me to this office "Security Pacific" or something. I go there. It does NOT look like an auto shop to me! There I saw a shit load of people for what appears to be filling out applications! OK! The office gives me some application. OK, is this where I apply for that tune up job?
Next thing I know, they tell me about a school. They lead me to USA (Unified Schools of America) on Azusa St. Right here, I meet up with a lady or two. They explain the details of this whole thing. And explaining to me that these schools are NOT free! Oh yeah, I say. Basically I'm asking "So what do I do next?" At this point I was kind of puzzled about what's going on! I thought it was a job, but now it's a school! Well, if this is what's get me into the job, then, I'll DO IT!
I then get the paperwork filled out and they give me the cost. $4000 for the training. A two month course. 8 hours a day. 5 days a week. Mom wants to see the paper work. I think mom needed to sign something. Mom gets a little wary about all this that's happening to me. But later she seems OK with it. Since it's a school. But EVEN ME, I feel a little shocked, that I am signing an agreement that I pay $4000 for the training! But I didn't worry too much because I was confident I will get a job EASY afterwards.
MY START DATE IS Sept, 25, 1989. Seemed pretty exciting to go to school. I wonder what it will be like. May look fun, because of remember when I was in high school. Getting some attention with other people.

Gil, u were at that time in life where you are leaving that high school bubble and entering the real world having to work and communicate with people of all ages, and at different stages of life. You can see it in this video. You were young and just trying to find your way. During the time of this filming I was right down the street on Arrow hwy. Working at Leslie's Pool Supplies in Glendora, just trying to find my way and fit in too. Great video brotha.

Getting into the repair business is so hard! I started out doing prep work (buffing & polishing) for $10/hour. It took me years to move up but I worked hard to get noticed by the bosses. And I went to school for it! Eventually I did move up, got some exposure & finally made it up to lead technician. Seeing your other videos leads me to think you did indeed learn a few things here. It's a shame you were passed up by shops. You probably could've been very successful as an auto technician.

I really feel bad that it didn't work out after going to school all that time Gilbert. Employers can be asses.

I watched this video in two parts. I enjoyed it very much. My question is: Didn't Gil say in the beginning that this School would place students once finished with the program? This sounds too familiar. I remember back in the 80s these commercials about becoming a mechanic and technicians, heck we still have them today and they just steal money from inexperienced people.

You got it! When I attended this school. They did "promise" they would assist us in finding a job as an auto mechanic. At the time, I sort of took it as: They are Going to get us a job! Once we finish school! To answer that question in more detail. They did indeed kept their promise. Although, I did not take advantage of this, because I was very confident it would be EASY to get a job. hahaha Yeah Right... Dead Wrong I was. However, it was like a year later I was still looking for an automotive tune up job. I came back to my school asking for "the assistant". So they did give me a list of auto shops with the phone numbers and addresses. That was it. And I did call a few of those numbers and I did apply! But never landed a permanent job because I just did not have enough experience!

min 0:29 "why are you video taping it?" uh, cuz in 25 years there's gonna be this global computer super highway that will connect everybody on this planet INSTANTLY. On this electronic "network" there will be this thing called KZbin where thousands if not millions of people will be able to watch and comment on videos like this... (kid faints)

Hey Gil, totally blown away by your 80s vlogs. Thank you. BTW, if you could take the DeLorean back in time, how would YOU explain the internet to your buddies back in '88? Or better yet, explain life in 2017?

Take the carburetor off your own car, here's a diagram, rebuild it. Now reinstall it. That will be 4000 Thousand dollars (in 1989). 😂

Cars we had back then would out last all the pos vehicles they make today. They don’t build vehicles like that anymore , now a days it’s all plastic and electrical, one little electric issue will leave you on the side of the road. Everything is built like shit now hands down
