I'm really intrigued by this game. I think the build road action was explained incorrectly in regards to links. I think the rules say you can only build one section at a time, so if you build in a 2 section link you can still only build one section which is why it's cheaper.

Box ticking is a mechanism more common to the "roll and write" or "flip and fill" game genres.

That's fair, some projects got pushed back from their original anticipated dates so it caused a compression in the schedule. Being out of town for 13ish days was also tough.
