After making the final part, the rib, you need to extrude the right side of the rib slightly to the right, that is x-direction, and union it to the main part to get a strong joint. Otherwise, you get a line contact only between big vertical cylinder and the rib which will ultimately affect the strength of the product.

For those who want to immediately jump in and defend AutoCAD please keep in mind I started out with AutoCAD for 3D work over 15 years ago, I stopped doing all 3D modeling for 10 years, and then took up SolidWorks. After watching this video I am sure I will stay with SolidWorks for 3D modeling. I find the moving of the XYZ coordinate tedious and a bit confusing. I believe this same part could have been drawn in 1/3 of the time with SW. I do not remember AutoCAD being so clunky in 3D modeling. With that statement, I would like to see two well-trained individuals draw this same part one in AutoCAD and the other using SolidWorks. It would be very interesting to see who could finish first and by how much.

Thanks again SourceCAD! The USC and view commands in 3D are some of the most confusing. You make it much simpler with your tutorial.

Jay, I am using ACAD 2018. I note that sometimes (yes sometimes not all times) when I do the final wedge section, the ""join"" function produces a spline and not polyline. I suspect there is something deep and subtle going on in my drawing. Are there techniques in ACAD to help solve these issues ?
@NimishP4 жыл бұрын
When you prepared a final rib and extruded by 6mm and then pulled by further 6mm, there will be gap at the end of the rib and the outer surface of the vertical cylinder on either side that need to be filled in. Just a thought.

Hello there, I have a question. How do you know that you should pull 2D geometry at the height of 14 units, when converting to 3D at 7:08?This height is not specified at the projection map, and one cannot simply calculate from other dimensions, or am I missing something?
@hafismuhammad70283 жыл бұрын
I also have the same doubt
@chichotwojay7402 жыл бұрын
I’ve been looking at the drawings trying to find out what combination of given measurements work to 14 units. The only thing I can think of (having never used cad) is the radius is given for the circle 14. That radius ‘looks’ the same length as the height of the base at 14 units. I would like an actual answer though and not me just eye balling it lol.

Thanks Jai, Thank you for making another fantastic training lesson. Precise translation in 3D relative to a curved surface is very tricky, and so you have to really plan yout our drawing approach . The clever part to this lesson is knowing how and where to relocate the UCS origin, then correctly orientate the X-Y plane. Finally, using the legacy polyline geometry of the semi-circle-rectangular segment and then translating it to the centre of the object is a master stroke.

Although I am using AutoCAD since 1998 however creating 3D modelling like Mechanical parts it is very easy to build in Solidworks software. To create above model in solidworks require maximum 5 minutes with real view rendering.

When I did the presspull command @ 11:33 of the vid, I had to just enter 75 units, rather than -75. It seems as though the direction I run the cursor represents the positive direction regardless of which direction the Z axis is. (I hope I worded that in a way that makes sense). I'm using Autocad 2017 so I'm wondering whether that's something that's changed for Autocad 2017 or if one of my settings is different than yours? Thanks.
@RivalXHorseman4 жыл бұрын
Old comment but for anyone who encounters it this was also the case for me using AutoCAD 2021. I was also thinking it could be a difference in settings.
@berkeru8 жыл бұрын
I have a question, at 21:38 you have created the polyline, but when you extrude it 6 units it shouldnt match the top face of cylinder perfectly. By that I mean the top most right corner of the polyline that your created is on the cylinder, but as you extrude the poly line the objects corner will be left outside of the cylinder if I am not wrong. Is there any solution for this?
@berkeru8 жыл бұрын
And if you stop at 22:00 you can see what I mean before entering the value 6 it is obvious that the object that you are creating will only touch the cylinder at 1 line which is the tangent. And if you stop at exactly 22:18 you can see the top view and the gaps that I mean
@berkeru8 жыл бұрын
and lastly at a comment below stating the same problem I see you responded: "The gap can be filled by extending length of wedge towards centre of cylinder so that it merges inside the concentric part of cylinder." But by doing so even though there is no gap, the corners are still not on the cylinder, that part still looks like a rectangle instead of a curve, is there any way to make it a curve matching the cylinder?
@sourcecad8 жыл бұрын
You can merge the gap by making a longer wedge and then chop off extra part so that it looks like the one shown in this image www.dropbox.com/s/w2kqgdvs57pwsa1/2016-11-23_22-17-44.jpg?dl=0

For some reason I cannot figure out, on the very last two steps. Where you extrude the strange shape 6 units in either direction. I extrude it, however it only gives me that shape, i.e. a hollow outline if you would. So rather than that nice solid extrude I get an extended outline. Any advice?
