You need to start using the same tyre on all the vehicles in your off road comparisons. The tyres on the Toyota are by far more road orientated than the other two.

Drove all three and got the defender. Overall very happy with my choice, you have to look at how you would use them. Defender has excellent road manner and as the majority of the time this is where they will be used it’s the obvious choice. Defender feels well put together with one slight mishap and that the bonnet release handle snapped in my hand after less than 5 uses…not impressed but overall it really is an exceptional car. Would happily recommend a d300! On reliability previous two cars were from Porsche and Audi and both spent time at the dealer in my ownership for warranty issues. I believe owning modern refrigerators this sort of thing comes with the territory regardless of manufacture! Buy what you like who gives a toss what the internet says!

Top Gear recently did a similar test, albeit not on an artificial course but in the ‘real’ wild, the Defender was a LWB and they incl a G-wagen. The Defender was placed last because it “struggled” off-road, Ineos was 3rd, G-wagen 2nd, Land Cruiser 1st. Yet here, the Defender wins. Good old Autocar, as ever, the blinkered, erm, defender of the JLR faith 😐

We're currently on a 5-year trip in a Grenadier across the world towing a Patriot X3, which we live in. If you're watching this, it may be of interest. We set off from London in mid-July 2023 with our two young kids and we’re approaching 50000km. At least 70% of our journey has been off-road...

Hi, great to see you too are watching all the yt vids. None of them compare to what you’re achieving . 50000km in and 18mths and great to see you have no issues with the grenadier . I don’t believe either the defender or the new LC would have dealt with your trip as good as the over engineered (for a reason) grenadier . Stay safe guys .
@projectwildearth
@projectwildearth 7 күн бұрын
@ We’re keeping on top of everything Grenadier related for obvious reasons! 😊 The only way we’d really know how well the Defender and the new LC would do, is to do the exact same as what we’ve done and see… Unfortunately most tests are very simple and like a lot of people point out, if they haven’t all got the same tyres, it’s hard to draw any real conclusions.

Good day, I have seen your videos and have always wondered what the issues, growing pains, and unexpected features/bugs/benefits of the Grenadier were for someone truly utilizing it to its full potential. Would you consider an episode specific to the Grenadier ? I think it would be wildly popular with owners who may never stretch their vehicles to the same limits, and yet would love to hear what and where those limits are, how you modified or did not modify specific aspects of the Grenadier to fit your needs.

For me the best is DEFENDER, I love short-wheelbase 4X4 Toyota missed it by not offering more powerful engine choices here in Europe :)
@edvardfaleide5207
@edvardfaleide5207 12 күн бұрын
Agreed. But: by importing cars overseas to the European market, Toyota faces restrictions of fuel emissions that the European manufacturers dont`t have to obey. Asian brands as Toyota have to sell a certain amount of e-cars in Europe before they can sell a single petrol or diesel powered car. And; when they sell their first car with petrol or diesel engine, it has to be a hybrid or a relatively small fuel engine. These are the EU regulations, which partly are a new protectionism: cars from EU-countries have milder restrictions. Not to mention countries that have stepped out of the EU: UK manufacturers as Jaguar Land Rover can continue to pump out powerful cars with powerful, big 6 and 8 cylindre engines without the same restrictions as overseas imported cars. The somewhat strangled 2,8 L turbo diesel engine in the new LandCruisers was launched in 2015 due to the strict EU import restrictions. That is; Toyota simply can`t offer the same powerful engines as Land Rover, without beeing punished with big import taxes. Toyota could (and would), but they can`t. But I still can`t understand why they don`t offer the LC250 in Europe with the same power train as in the US: the hybrid with 326 HP.

Please note, a re-circulating ball steering box can have less kickback off road compared to a steering rack, not because it is mounted on the chassis, but simply because it has roughly twice the friction of the rack! Hence, hit is, and there is a much higher damping force, so the handwheel jerks less for that input! It's pretty much impossible for a passenger or small commercial vehicle to have a front beam axle with a steering rack (you have to mount the rack to the axle and somehow deal with a very tortuous and poor geometrical solution for the connection to the handwheel steering column (it's do-able for large commercial vehicles or things with purely hydraulic systems). The reason the Toyota and the LR have independant suspensions is nothing to do with axle articulation and EVERYTHING to do with getting decent steering for the 99.9% of time users drive on-road or in light off-road conditions (ie rough roads / gravel tracks etc) The Grenadier uses a beam axle because someone not very clever still though this is the best solution for axle articulation, when in 2025 it basicaly makes no difference as the limiting factor for any road homologated car is the roll stiffness required to pass the moose test and similar "swerve at high speed" tests. Here, it's absolutely necessary to have enough front suspension lateral roll stiffness to prevent the car from turning upside down, or from losing control. Without active or disconnectable ARBs (jeep!) you are always compromised here, and the front axle system may as well be optimised for on-road performance (steering feel / linearity and vehicle safety / stability), rather than chase some silly mythical "beam axles are best off road" nonsense.......

Driving these vehicles around a purpose built course in Bedfordshire is totally different from the real world. John Cadogan's Australian KZbin Chanel recently covered the failure of an Australian Car Review Magazine test of the new Land Cruiser which suffered failure of its Hybrid drive when water damaged the electrical systems on the test vehicle in Outback conditions. As for the Land Rover, yes all that fancy electronics makes for an amazing off road vehicle but what happens when it breaks downs in the Outback hundreds of miles north of Alice Springs with a hardware/software issue (with or without a JLR warranty) when the nearest JLR dealer with a lap top to diagnose & reboot the system is 1000+ miles & days away? Modern 4*4's have become not fit for their original purpose due to world wide legislation.

Personally have driven /owned Disco 3, Patrols (2) Pajero, Land Cruiser 120 Prado and 60, 80 & 200 series (current) and they all had good and bad points. But in terms of my criteria - build quality, parts availability (in Australia), warranty issues and reliability - I have to stick with Toyota (for now)! Now that I’m older would probably look at adding ride quality to my criteria. I often discuss build quality with my son who’s an apprentice panel beater - Japanese built cars seem to have the edge.

Another (well-known) motoring channel recently put the same 3 vehicles (and the G-wagon as well) through a much more challenging offroad course and the Land Rover Defender (sadly) really struggled... Compared to the Toyota and the Grenadier, the "new" Defender is more of an SUV/school run vehicle. It might perform well in quite easy/short offroad tests/challenges, but you wouldn't want to take the Defender on any sort of overland trip. The owners of Land Rover and Jaguar are pulling out all the stops to destroy these 2 brands.

Similarly equipped Grenadier or Land Cruiser would also be about the same. All great vehicles in their own ways.

You got it wrong. The recirculating ball steering box is rigidly mounted to the chassis so does not move with the axle. It is not possibly to fit superior electric rack and pinion steering to a moving live axle and therefore many safety systems fitted to rivals have to be forgone. It’s a terribly archaic steering system with far too many compromises for a modern vehicle that will inevitably spend the majority of its life on tarmac or mild unpaved roads.

What about the 1996 LC90? Or the 1998 LC100? Or the 2002 LC120? Or the 2010 LC150? All of these models started out as something quite different than the sturdy icons of reliability and durability which they got to be after a couple of years of improvement and evolution. The word "trash" is an exaggeration which makes no sense. Look at the Range Rovers and Land Rovers. After your definition, these cars must be the worst "trash" of all: with break downs and heavy repair costs even after many years of production. And reliability as "only good point" of a Toyota LandCruiser? You must be kidding, sir! Have you ever driven a LC100, 200 or 300??

@@cwx8 Yes - also. But the LC150, 200 and 300 are not 2 decades ago; the point is, they were produced for a long period of time, started out with some issues and not a 100% reliability, but were improved and developed to be better, year by year. Lots of LC80, LC90, LC100, LC120, LC150 and LC200 from "way back when" are still on the road - also those that NOT were produced 2 decades ago! Sure, the LC300 and LC250 will have the same process. Their imperfections will be detected, taken care of and removed by Toyota - just in the same manner as they always used to handle reliability issues.

Toyota are definitely not "Trash",nor are they unreliable.I have had both brands,now an LC200,and many years of LRs.The Toyotas have been so far ahead in just about every way it is rediculous.Where the LRs are ahead is poor resale,unreliability/silly issues,and huge costs for any repairs/maintenance.Modern LRs also have poor wheel travel,and no manually lockable center diff,which is not ideal and actually dangerous in some off road situations,particulary coming down a slippery hill as in the vid.

Of course, as a UK channel, Autocar doesn`t hesitate long to declare the LR as the winner of the test. As british review and reviewers normally do! The LC is a heavier car than the LR and and has 143 HP (!) less than the LR, but is still able to do its job as effortless as the LR. This should be a reason for reflections. But not for Autocar; the british car just HAS to be chosen as a clear winner.

@edvardfaleide5207
@edvardfaleide5207 12 күн бұрын
@@FranzTraininand OK, let´s see how it developes in the long run. I will not claim that the LC250 is superior and an enormous success for the time being. But I suppose it will stay around for a long time and will get its upgradings, improvements and refinements, just as all other LandCruisers in the last 70 decades! And I`m quite sure that it at some point of time also will come with the 3,4 L twin turbo V6 from the LC300, Lexus GX and LX. The core of the new LC250 is good, but some of its compromises clearly are rather ufortunate (boot space, load capacity, lack of engine alternatives, ground clearance). And I will say; it is not a very professional test concept, when comparing the short, light version of the LR with the mighty 345 HP 6 cylindre engine with the standard, heavy LC with 202 HP. And yes, it would be more fair to compare this LR Defender to the Lexus GX550 with the V6 and 354 HP. However, in this Autocar review, it is by no means evident that the LC was severely outclassed and put to shame by the LR. They more or less did the same job! Autocar`s brief and poorly underbuilt conclusion, that the LR undoubtedly and without nuances is the most capable off road vehicle of these three, does not show a very professional and dependable test concept. Comparing pears, plums and apples is never simple and quickly done - without beeing unfair and subjective. If your own area mainly grows plums and you love these plums, you tend to find them better than the pears and apples from other areas. You then are not objective and neutral. You look at the advantages by eating your delicious plums and compare them to the disadvantages of the pears and apples. The result is given. This was my point. It is not a criticism of the LR, nor a praise of the LC or the Grenadier. It is a criticism of Autocar´s test concept and conclusion; for being convenient, superficial, inconsistant, not nuanced and not fair. THAT is most important, when you speek about beeing fair!

@edvardfaleide5207 12 күн бұрын
@@GearUpind No. LandCruisers are a big, wide spread family with lots of models, variants and specs on different markets in the entire world. What you call a "real" LC, is the medium duty station wagon that was built specific for the US market, with lots of space, a third seat row and big straight six and V8 engines. The LC55/60/80/100/200 belong to this part of the LC family. The claim that only this and nothing but this one out of a variety of many LandCruisers is the "real one" is nonsense. This claim origins from the USA, where the people have little knowledge (and interest) of what`s going on in the rest of the world. The funny thing was that Toyota for a couple of years stopped to offer the LC200 in the US. And that they decided not to offer the new LC300 on this important market. I suppose they thought that the yankees ought to be satisfied with its brother, the Lexus LX600. And that they would find interest in the GX550 and LC250, because the GX has the same V6 engine and platform as the LX and the LC250 has the same platform as the LX and GX. These facts ought to be enough to tell as well americans as europeans that the new LC250 by no means is a "fake LC", but closely integrated in the family. Don´t present this argument about the LC250 as beeing a "not real" LC. It is a real LC with the same platform, but another set up and other purposes than the LC300. Buy what you need (and can afford) of these two LCs - or buy the brothers, the Lexus LX600 or the GX550. They are also LandCruisers, with more ugly grilles and a bit more luxury features. There is a real LandCruiser for every taste, demand and bank account... Personally, I´d much rather drive a real LC, that is a LC250 or a Lexus GX550 off road than the big, too heavy and too luxurius LC300 and LX600. Compared to the original idea behind the LandCruiser, I´m not sure that today`s American definition of the LC is even close to the meaning of a "real" LC.
