@@MercOnefrom a quality and build standpoint, today's Mercedes-Benz is about 10% what the W123 and W124 platform was. The 500E in particular was designed by Mercedes, hand-assembled by Porsche and had an E60 AMG variant that was faster than a Ferrari. There has never been that attention to detail nor quality of workmanship from Mercedes since the departure of Bruno Sacco. But sure, modern Mercedes are great cars for a few years or 50k miles. Just a much poorer value for the price by comparison.

@@MercOne Modern Mercedes cars are unnecessarily complicated plastic nightmares that really have nothing to do with cars like the W124. Back then they were made like a Rolex, high price, but super high quality and longevity. @@aurorajones8481 I recently put down a deposit to order a Sprinter that has a retail price of just under $70k; I won’t go into why i need it, but the competitors wouldn’t meet my needs as effectively- I didn’t want FWD or a 3.5 liter six cylinder gas engine, and they really were not substantively cheaper (a couple of grand) With tax, tags, a few dealer upfits planned, extended warranty, prepaid maintenance (they work out to less overall) the amount I’m putting down, the loan term, I’m going to be right about $100k. My mother pointed out to me I could buy four cars with retail prices of $25k instead; nevermind my needs require a large van with standing headroom- it’s not $25k vs $100k because all such cars have tax, tags, and dealer fees, and if it’s European, factory extended warranty and service contract still makes sense, too. And while I suppose I could purchase a $25k car outright, (and probably would at current interest rates) you still need to include the loan costs for a fair comparison to my full tally. My point being $190k plus tax goes up against the $130k plus tax. The W124 was a much more expensive car than the W213 with any engine (although more so with the 5.0 V8). And you can feel it; I’ve owned mine for 18 years.

All 500e/E500/E60 had different headlights than regular 124s’. They had brighter high beams to give you better visibility when driving at high speeds at night. Notice that the fog lights in the 500e/E500/E60 have been moved to the bumper, and the high beams have been moved to where the fog lights would have been in the regular 124 - the inner side of the headlight.

Thanks for this one, Bill ! It's obvious you really love this one, and I can't blame you.. You know.. the thought occurs to me that the entire construct of what a car is and what they do is being transformed before our eyes, and I don't think we're better off for it. I'm at an age where even the early 1990s feels like last month to me, and we were just in such a different era with everything back then.. So far, I am NOT a fan of the 21st century at all. No fun feeling like you’re about to sh*t through a screen door in traffic! I had to have a foot of my colon removed, so I tell people I have a semicolon ‘;’! You hit this one out of the park, Bill! A largely unknown unknown rocket ship built in conjunction with Porsche. It was an awful business decision because of the cost and complexity of the endeavor. But this is classic Mercedes thinking. Built to a standard, not a price point. Other than the mid 1990’s wiring harness issues, it was also quite reliable. The w124 started to be slightly less analog and more run by sensors but not nearly what we have today. I’d call this the penultimate Mercedes just behind the 600. A very enjoyable video. If this was your nephew’s doing keep it up!

21:23 the mirror situation, as far as I know, was born out of how each one is used. The mirror on the driver's side (regardless of LHD or RHD) was made wider so that there's less of a blind spot. Why the driver's side? Well assuming the driver obeys traffic laws (which the majority of Germans do), they should not be in the passing lane while cruising along the highway, but if they needed to pass, then a good view of vehicles coming up in the passing lane from behind is needed, so that the driver can safely make the lane change, pass, then return to the cruising lane. Vehicles in the cruising lane were "less important", because presumably the driver would have just passed them, and be able to know when there's sufficient room to move back over in front of them, and that's why the passenger side mirror is a lot narrower

1993... right in the middle of Mercedes' "brilliant" idea of biodegradable wire insulation for underhood harnesses. Epic disaster for 1991 to 1995 Mercedes owners.... and yes, I have a 1993 300E to have experienced the stalling, rough idle, no start, damaged throttle module and disintegrated / melted wiring looms!

Thanks Bill for the amazing video as always. This one was a true special, a definite tribute to an all time classic. It’s too bad they’re not built like this anymore. Would you agree that the W212 built from 2009-16 was the last durable Benz?

Yay ... a long full form Bill video of a real car (non Tesla). Sounds like peak German sedan. Not sure it moves me like an XJ6 Series III or a Fleetwood Brougham ... but no doubt quite a machine.

The 500E reminds me of a luxurious version of the 190E 5-speed I owned. I loved that car. Black with red leather interior.

@@dextersmithbsee I already own an '81 W123 chassis 240D, but I missed the boat on the 500E. About two years ago there were two 500E models within driving distance of my address for about $30K. They were in rough shape and would likely have needed another $10K to get sorted-- so $40K all in. I thought that was steep so I decided to wait and find better ones--maybe in my state--or by auction in other states. HaHa. Boy was I wrong. Just a few months later the market for classic Mercedes went completely bananas (Thank you Tyler Hoover/Doug DeMuro/Jason Camissa) and now a "decent" 500E is $50K or more. I have an even better (sad) story: a corner used car dealer was selling a 560SEC--black on black with custom wheels and strong running gear for $5K. Since it was a cheap store, I figured likely $15K would need to be put in, so $20K all in. I thought it was too steep. Ha! They're going for over $50K now. You can't win 'em all, I guess--but thanks for the commment--I'll keep it in my pocket for the future.

This should be an interesting video. Never knew Mercedes and Porsh collaborated. "Never Say Never" by Romeo Void started playing on XM as the night driving clip ended and the front shot/engine start clip began. Great song to go with the start of this video! Nephew must have been taken to the woodshed, as we have the Bill format back! 😁 I missed the night drives and the opening front and taillights shots. Now, "Cars" by Gary Numan is playing. Fitting! 👍

I remember that in a Dutch car magazine this car was described as "a sports car with the allure of a taxi" 😃because in The Netherlands (as in Germany and many other parts of Europe) these MB E Classes were used a lot as taxis albeit with a diesel engine of course.

German here, at your service [heels klicking]. According to the literature they primarily did the asymetric mirrors for aerodynamic reasons and secondarily for better visibility during parallel parking.

Hey I’m Curious what you would recommend. Or if you have maybe a top three list. I’m looking for my son a different daily driver. We’ve already thought past a corvette and we were leaning towards the Lexus Ls400-430 but the premium fuel was a slight turn off. He wants a v8, automatic, preferably 4 door car that has excellent reliability and possibly some curb appeal. Great videos! And We would appreciate your feedback thanks!
