Mercedes S-Class review: still the king!

This is the seventh-generation of the Mercedes S-Class, a flagship saloon model first introduced in 1972 on the coattails of an illustrious lineage of even older Mercedes luxury models dating back to the dawn of motoring.
As such the S-Class has always been the company’s most important brand statement, encapsulating the very best of what its engineers, designers and craftspeople have to offer. It’s an approach summed up in the words of the company’s current motto ‘The Best or Nothing’ which - apart from resonating with Frank Sinatra fans - is an apt description of the qualities the S-Class has brought to the luxury car segment over the years.
But we live in confusing times, and at this moment on the cusp of a wholesale switchover to electric vehicles and digital interfaces, even the S-Class must be wondering about its place in the world. It’s got mild hybrid technology, an impressive array of electronic and infotainment tech, and the usual opulent creature comforts, but it was developed in the shadow of a far more significant internal rival for the top Mercedes crown in the shape of the all-electric EQS. But as we find out in this review, the S-Class can still mix it with its all-electric counterpart...

Played the start a few times 😅 nice demonstration of its ability to do evasive manoeuvres. The S Class looks way better than the EQS, the exterior proportions aren't right on the EQS whereas the S Class is bang on

The S580e is the best possible S-class for city driver economics. Whether you plug it in or not, you get the benefits of the straight 6 using less expensive fuel.

It would be the perfect car without the black plastic. I am assuming they will replace it with better materials in the facelift like they did with the 213 E-class. They surely learned their lesson already that people don't want that - it's just a stupid marketing decision.

Good to see you back Nicola and what a car to review. I have no problem with the car or the review. My bank manager however does have a problem, with the car, with the review, indeed with everything connected to motoring. Since you managed to get a “free car” from Mercedes, would you also give us some tips on how to approach car manufacturers, always worth a try!!

Mercedes should have done what BMW did with the new 7 series and kept the S Class body for the EV version instead that horrible blobby looking EQ thing which doesn't look like it's worth more than 50k

Classy car review Nicola! You know how to make us all laugh. This must be the ultimate S class. If I was you I would put it on your list. Wait for massive depreciation which kills the S class. Then in 5 years' time take a new role as a chauffeur and you'll be the happiest lady driver in the world. Your clients will be smiling all the way to the destination. Unless you have the guy from the film "Me be before you!" He might say you are a bit chatty :-). Keep up the great work!

My uncle just bought a S580 with Silver Exterior, White interior. Absolutely beautiful - as if you got a "Maybach" for $130,000. I test drove the EQS. I was very excited about it, but unfortunately, there were issues: #1 It's not as large as the S-class. #2 You can't get an EQS with rear seat reclining package like the S-class. #3 The Hyperscreen can only be purchased on the AWD 580 models because of the chip shortages. I instead preordered a Cadillac Lyriq AWD fully loaded to be my first EV. I love the S-class, but it's an absolute gas guzzler. The fit and finish is beautiful, but it begs the question: Why doesn't the S-class get the HYPERSCREEN which is far superior to the MBUX tablet?

Fun sponge alert! I hate to say it but testing two vehicles even being from the same manufacture debating the cup holders whilst we are poised on the brink of a third world war for finite resource carbon fuels are implicated / the root cause is a bit first world at best and at worst delusional. The problem I have is avoiding the brutal fact that we are driving round in our grandads technology and since day 1 the fighting over what is a limited resource has caused wars, instability and with a potential climate epoch as and ending. So working from a top down principal grandad keep your piston engine the EQS wins, world gather that free energy and get your independence back. And before any counter arguments, I practice what I preach and have done for 10 years with both car and motorcycle (and Im a petrol head ) EVs are more fun, essentially free to run off solar and one day the garages where we all love to pour £££s in a black hole shut, at that point the S class is redundant.

I was hoping for more info about the car itself, as I worked for daimler Benz in Germany many years ago in Stuttgart as an engineer, and therefore have more than a passing inerest in the subject.
