Thanks! Very helpful and gave me confidence to undertake this simple DIY replacement. Tip for folks without spare: Remove the rails (T25 Torx) and foam tray to provide easier access to battery clamp bolt, bottom right. I went with the $169 Costco Interstate AGM, which should be an upgrade of the original Varta in my 2018 TI. I used a ratchet offset and screwdriver set, which worked like a charm!

Thanks for the video. The MTX is a great battery. There's a procedure to reset the warning lights afterward as well as the steering wheel angle sensor--turn the the wheel lock to lock in both directions. One additional thing, esp if you live near the ocean. Take a bit of emory cloth and clean up the inside of the terminal clamps and put a light coat of Auto Fanatic Terminal Grease around the terminals.

I sort of get the dealer pricing. Recently had an electrical issue repaired at large dealership. The overhead was huge. Massive building, seemingly too many unnecessary employees - two young women at the service desk who spent 90% of their time on personal phones, an other employee whose job was to move cars from service drop off to mechanics, etc. After my car was moved to the ready area it took the service advisor twenty minutes to complete his paperwork. Then to the billing department, where there were four clerks - I was the only customer at the time. The dealership did a very good job and had an excellent repair warranty. Sometimes the dealership is the way to go, but so many routine maintenance can be done at a fraction of dealer cost + I enjoy taking car of my car myself. Happy motoring!

Hello from the UK, Thank you so much for the video - yep, easy to do, I appreciate the guidance ! Some info for UK owners and perhaps for those in some other markets. I have a 2018 Milano Edition which I've owned from new, still with its original Alfa/Varta battery. Battery was going sour, so replaced it with a Yuasa one ordered from a well known UK online battery supplier who also offered several other brands including Varta, Bosch, Exide etc.. On installing, it was larger in length than the original and covered the captive nut which is used for the clamp. Wondering what to do and should I contact the vendor, I then noticed to the side of the captive nut (about an inch) was a sticker and once removed it uncovered another captive nut which lined up perfectly with the new larger battery allowing it to be clamped down securely. So if you're still on your original battery and the replacement is longer, don't panic. I guess Alfa fitted two different sizes dependant on market? Thanks again for the tutorial !

Dealership won’t warranty batteries anymore since 2020 all they do is waste time charging it and telling you nothing is wrong but being proactive doing it yourself solves almost every problem on these cars. I just replaced my battery on my 2023 Giulia QV after only 6 months it went bad. Every Italian car uses the worst cheapest batteries that are the root cause of issues
@NickGrisanti
@NickGrisanti 4 ай бұрын
@autofanaticcars Agreed, I've experienced a few weird electrical gremlins that Alfa couldn't identify. Had a major issue with the main ground strap going bad (under car, attached to transmission). The scenerio seemed like a dead battery again, until a cloud of white smoke came out from the driver side wheel well while trying to start. Ultimately the corroded ground strap put stress on the engine wire harness and burnt the wiring in multiple spots. Car just went out of warranty and Alfa quoted $7K to fix. I escalated with Alfa USA since a ground strap is not even a maintenance item and it's obviously a defect. They picked up the repair tab and made it right, but def gives me concerns about the longevity of the car.

Auto Fanatic, great DIY vid. Keep them coming. To help with terminal corrosion and add life, an extra step I'd suggest is a battery terminal grease kit-extremely inexpensive and available at any auto parts store or Walmart. Please update if this resolved all the alarm quarks and other electrical issues after you get farther down the road with it. BTW: Looking forward to the brake vid. There have been some open complaints with the brake-by-wire system Alfa uses in that it's prone to failure. Not sure if it's related to not adhering to the schedule of bleeding/flushing the brakes. Also, others have brought up that the rear brake pads wear quickly. If so, wonder what upgrade you'd suggest.

Have any local repair shop do your battery they honestly can not charge you more than 1/2 hour labor it is that easy. Crazy how the dealer wanted to charge you to check your battery that is supposed to be part of the initlal vehicle check process when cars go in for any service or warranty. Dealers in general are hurting bad with lack of cars to sell and most owners buying out their leased and using independent shops so it seems they are all trying to squeeze money from everyone BMW, Audi and MB are even worse

this video inspired me to swap out my ailing original battery in my Giulia because it looks so straightforward. I ordered the larger 95AH Bosch which the AA website recommended so I'm sure it's 100 percent legit. The larger battery required means the fixing clamp has to bolt into another hole hidden under a sticker. it's a bit of an awkward job compared to the stelvio because of the location of the battery but all went fine. when you start it for the first time you have to go full lock both ways with the steering then restart to clear warnings. also, after the restart a cooling fan stayed on so I went for a drive and all is back to normal.... one benefit of a bad battery was that stop start never functioned, so I'll have to remember to switch that off I suppose!
@autofanaticcars
@autofanaticcars Жыл бұрын
do it yourself it really is not hard as I show here it will solve most if not all gremlins on these cars. I also loved how the start stop never worked but i also think this feature shocks the batteries and causing the cells to get weaker over time. the absolute dumbest feature added to new cars thanks to Govt control and BS.

the problem is not the battery but rather the insufficient charge level if the car is not used regularly for long enough trips, battery % while perfectly fine for turn on the car, is not enought for car secondary electronic systems. replacing batteries over and over is stupid and expensive, i rather plug a battery charger once every 1-2 week for an entire night and this help keeping battery level nice. and the problem is not alternator either, is just some battery drain + the IBS not "wanting" to charge battery enought while the engine is on. for ayone looking for a good quality and not overly expensive battery charger/mainteiner: ctek mxs 5.0

@autofanaticcars 3 ай бұрын
the problem with Alfa and every Italian car as long as I can remember is they are all using garbage batteries that discharge even after a few days of not using the car It is the battery type they are using and the poor quality. Another issue is these cars sit on boats coming over to America and then sit on car lots for months more being idle and never being charges and this ruins the battery cells making them fail prematurely. Cars like BMW, and Mercedes use much more expensive and superior Lithium Ion batteries that not only save weight they last a very long time without the need for a battery tender.. Having a Ctek is great but not if you park the car outdoors that is just not possible as your not supposed to use extra long extension cords on battery chargers. the solution that fixes almost every electrical glitch on these cars is install he Interstate battery and your good for many years to come. I just had my 2023 QV battery fail after only a few months of owning it and it was parked for 4 days and lost charge in my garage.

The battery passes the auto-part stores tests but it's not strong enough for the alfa. I just buy the new Interstate AGM and I'll see in another year. Maybe keeping it out of dynamic will do the trick....

Mate, you forgot to connect the vent hose. You risk breathing some nasty stuff from your battery.

No vent hose on the new battery it’s different cell design

@@autofanaticcars Look closer at your footage at 8:53, you'll see the vent hole. The procedure is to take out the connector from the old battery and put it on this one. But now it's kinda late, since you already recycled the old one... At least let your followers know and not make the same mistake, as in the end it is about everyone's health

It doesn't need to be programmed, right? Just get a new battery and install it?

Why do these new Alfa Romeos chew through batteries so quickly?
@autofanaticcars
@autofanaticcars Жыл бұрын
all Italian cars have these issues since I was a kid learning and working on these cars. the biggest issue is the subpar quality of the batteries used by outside vendors. then cars sit for months on ships to get to USA then on dealers lots for more months and with the car sitting idle so long the cells discharge and get weaker over time. New cars have very robust electrical systems and any drop in voltage will drive the cars computers crazy.

I think the Varta batteries suck and the start stop systems overwork an already terrible battery. Also the platform was originally supposed to be higher voltage for future hybrid applications but they were behind and never realized it.

@@autofanaticcars Jaguars have the same problem, ESPECIALLY if they're not dailied. So a trickle charger is generally a good thing to have around. Too many complex systems on these cars.

presumably, there is a software update that might remedy it

Well you missed the most important part of this exercise in this video and the reason why you had a problem in the first place. If you take a look at the battery post of the old battery you can see the tremendous corrosion of light gray patina on the top of the post and along the contact surface areas of the battery clamp. I don’t understand why you thought that you don’t need to clean the clamp surfaces before you put the new battery on. Clearly you’re just going have the same problem in a few months. Alfa uses three different types of metals at the battery post and that is the root cause of the problem because they do not protect it at all from salt air corrosion when they ship the car over the ocean. There is an aluminum band clamp, cad plated steel bolt and a lead post…it’s a recipe for tremendous corrosion growth which causes low-voltage conditions and Whell you missed the most important part of this exercise in this video and the reason why you had a problem in the first place. Also on the positive fuse or you want to put the screws in first and hold the clamp down before you tighten the 10 mm nut on the positive post and then and only then connect the negative. Connecting to negative is the last step. poor continuity. Also on the positive fuse array you want to put the screws in first and hold the clamp down before you tighten the 10 mm nut on the positive post and then and only then connect the negative doing that is the last step. When you start the car to a short drive with a full left lock turn in full rate lock turn to reset the steering angle sensor/ forward collision camera and then cycle it off and on and it should clear all the codes. .

terminal corrosion has zero to do with bad battery cells and the battery was tested and cells were bad. regardless the battery needed replacement and was easy to do, corrosion on terminals may solve some owners issues but not everything has to do with that if the battery cells are bad. No issues at all since.

private shop versus a dealer is quite different we all know even a local gas station service center would do this for a nominal fee.
