We are actively considering both the GLC and the X3 - you are 100% right, it really comes down to price and I agree with you, I actually enjoy driving and like feeling engaged as the driver. Maybe it’s because I’m older and grew up having to learn how to operate a vehicle without all the fancy tech. We had to know how to parallel park because the car couldn’t do it for us. We had to learn how to use our mirrors to change lanes and safe driving practices because there was no such thing as “lane assist.” I think the more aggressive styling of the BMW is attractive and appreciate that BMW is less expensive for an absolutely top notch driving experience. BMW is a winner for me. Thanks for the side by side comparison- really helpful!

On a daily drive, the Mercedes soft suspension wins it for me. Harsh suspensions on the BMW becomes tiresome after a while.

i believe the X3 is due for an update in 2025, including the iDrive8 system. If you care about having the latest, you may want to wait for that one. Current one is still very nice thought, especially if you like having climate buttons outside the screen.

X4 ftw. I did test drive GLC 2023 and my wife who pays attention to details discovered it was full of plastic inside, front and rear. mercedes looks shiny to catch your eye but it's just going down in quality

I have the X3 M40i LCI and its a superb car. But comparing an „old“ X3 with a brand new GLC is difficult. Maybe wait until 2024 when the new X3 comes out. Great review, thanks and danke Thomas

Stop being biased talking out your a** the cars are both from the same gen and same year. They just updated the x3 in 2022. BMW is very conservative and just decided to keep the same design concept with the x3. Don’t blame the guy saying it’s an older model because the Merc is nicer and you can’t except that fact because you own an x3.

I don’t know I thought the appearance (which for many is crucial) comparison was a little lacking. The x3 looks worse in every way. Exaggerated, dated, and almost cheap. The Mercedes, sleek, more symmetrical, and interesting front design.

My choice would be the GLC. The styling is cleaner and more attractive, both inside and out. The BMW's styling is a bit busier which doesn't work for me. I had an X3 M40i and while it handled well, i never felt comfortable in the driver's seat and the ride was overly stiff where it didn't feel like a luxury car. I understand it's a "Jr M" car but it never felt relaxed enough.

Styling looks like a girls car on the Mercedes. The 4 Cylinder must fit your girly personality. The X3 is very comfortable. I haven't driven this new GLC, but the last GLC was not comfortable at all compared to the X3 tbh...Also the X3 is getting a full redesign in 2024-25

I have both in 2023…. Got the GLC for my wife but unfortunately I find myself driving that more. It is better than the X3. Only diehard BMW fans don’t want to accept the truth. In the GLC I feel like I am driving my money’s worth. Don’t mind people talking about plastic on the inside, they are talking rubbish. The rear axis wheel is amazing. The drive assist is sweet. BMW went better with X5 and X6 only. X3 is behind

Good review, thank you. On this and other reviews you have done, the X3 has had the adaptive suspension. In the US, it is bundled into a "dynamic handling package" (DHP) along with bigger brakes and some kind of higher-tech steering. To get DHP, BMW also requires purchasing the M Sport package, so overall DHP costs about $4500 more on the 30i in the US (DHP is standard on the M40i). Is it worth getting on the 30i? Is the ride in comfort mode on bad roads (=most US roads) more comfortable or less comfortable with the adaptive suspension than without it? Perhaps you are not able to answer this if DHP is standard in Germany. But so far I have been unsuccessful in answering this question using US reviews, and get conflicting answers from forums. Thanks.

I was considering the GLC - the tech dazzled me! At my wife's insistence I went for a test drive of the X3 - no comparison. Exactly as you say, I was "driving" the X3, not being driven as in the GLC - and the tiny bit of turbo lag I experienced in the GLC was gone. It also felt more like I was driving a car than an SUV. I agree the steering on the X3 is, in my description, a bit "sloppy" in comfort mode but right on the button in sport, or as I keep mine now, in Individual Sport mode (surprised you didn't notice the difference in steering when in Sport Mode) . And.... strictly a vanity issue, but the Brooklyn Grey paint with the black trim package really dresses the X3 up. I just wish we had a autobahn here in Pennsylvania so I could try the speeds shown in the review!! Enjoyed your comparison very much -- Thanks

Congratulations for the review, Thomas! I have already chose the X3 . I don't like de interior of the GLC. I hate that big tablet and also a lot of cheap plastic on the midle console and those hideous fake exhausts. I deed not test drive-it so I can't say nothing about the way GLC drives. But I deed test-drived the Q5 an hour after the X3 and in my opinion the X3 is way better than the Q5 and more roomier inside. Congratulations again and all the best!👏

I currently lease that X3, I lease a new vehicle every 3 years and my previous two leased vehicles have also been X3's. Two weeks ago, while on vacation, I ended up with a virtually new GLC as my rental, the GLC only had 4000kms on it. My current X3 lease is up in 1 year and I will be switching over to the GLC. The interior was much better and roomier, the seats a lot more comfortable. I am 6'1" with a bad hip, that was just replaced, and I prefer that GLC rental over my X3 for comfort. The driving ability of the GLC totally surprised me, the 9 speed shifted effortlessly. I could go on a lot more but for me that GLC rental sold me on Mercedes, almost to the point of I may return my X3 early and get a GLC.

I drive both since the 90s. I always got a Mercedes and a BMW in my garage. Now I have a BMW X1 and Mercedes GLC. I really love the driving experience of a bimmer, ma interiors and that plush feeling in a Mercedes is much better.

I shopped all of the upscale SUVs and found that, for me, the top 3 were MB GLC, Audi Q5 & BWM X3. I purchased the GLC and went back the follwoing year and purchased a GLA which I found to be smaller but quite comparable to the BMW X3. There was no single catagory in which the GLC did not outshine the BMW X3.

Thanks again for another excellent detailed review. BMW (own) would still be my choice. GLC for looks/tech and X3 drive/ease. Another consideration is where you live, BMW XDrive is superior for driving in snow/rain. GLC would be a better choice in sunny and warmer climates.

The GLC is new and has newer tech, the X3 is just a face-lift, it’s not new. This GLC will be comparable to the all-new 2024 X3 with ID8

We've had 3 Volvo wagons in the past...1980, 2005 and most recently 2015. I wish I could have those seats in our new BMW; Volvo has the best seats and I drove vehicles for a 7 car line new car dealership for six years!

Autogefühl at it’s best, another great and comprehensive review! Macan is the King ;-) But if I had to choose between these two, I’d get the BMW. I prefer both the exterior design and the driving experience. The only thing I don’t like are the new X roof spoilers, they look if they’d belong to another car, and BMWs interior is good, but Audi and Mercedes are doing a better job.

Hi Thomas! Excellent review, very entertaining and informative as usual!👍🏻 As I’ve said a few times before, the new generation Mercedes switchgear (including steering wheel) is a complete regression/disappointment in functionality! Have they not been paying attention to reviewer and public rejection? The previous generation is so much more satisfying and safer to use from a lower driver distraction factor, with redundant tactile controls. So 4 cylinder only (engine sounds like an economy rental car) and poor switchgear engineering execution are 2 deal breakers too many. I cannot believe I am preferring a BMW, though I am all Audi at the moment. I do miss my former 2020 GLC43 very much (traded for larger Q8), what a great sporty fun SUV! I am done with Mercedes!

yeah unfortunately BMW is headed in the same direction. Look at their new X1, no buttons at all, everything is either voice on in the layers deep screen, absolutely horrible decisions, let the most important buttons be tactile. I wish these things were mandated by regulations, purely because of how unsafe they are. Now is a good time to get the current BMWs before they all jump on the new idrive8 system. They also removed the dynamic select button from the center console in the idrive8 system on the new x1 :(

I have never not liked a Mercedes, especially a Mercedes interior. My GLC is the most comfortable car I have ever owned and its interior is sublime

Width of the trunk in the BMW is a lot less, bc of the shape of the entrance if you want to load a wide object. Had that same problem with my Volvo XC60.

I had a GLC 2020 that got totalled in an accident. I now have a 2023 X3 since the New GLC is not yet available in Japan. I'm yet to see if the X3 is really better than the new glc since I like Benz more. Benz + that x3 doesnt have: Remote Start, Love the Burmester, more LED color choices and effects, air-sus, Seat Massage, self lane change. X3 + that GLC doesnt have: Way Better Auto Pilot, 3d Harman Kardon Sound, Sporty direct Steer feel, Heated Steering wheel, Apple Watch and Phone NFC key means no need to bring the keys!, More quietter than the old GLC. Actually useable Self Parking mode. I had 2 benz and not once did the self parking worked, while the x3, one try and it's all automatic! You can close your eyes while it parks itself.

Strange about the self parking. I have a 2014 E Class with the parking package and it parks itself so well. It seems they've gone backwards then?

@@SDav21 I also had a 2014 model with parking pilot. It always goes into the wrong spot. Having the BMW x3 for just 2days when I tried the self parking, it went straight into my spot in one click!

I just found out yesterday that the 2023 MSRP for the USA model GLC 300 4MATIC SUV will have a huge price increase. It will increase from the 2022 $45,850.00 to a ridiculous and very high $49,100.00. Plus you have to add on top of this huge MSRP amount the destination cost of $1,150.00 (+$100 from 2022). To summarize you will pay $50,250.00 without adding ANY one single option. I think Mercedes has made a huge mistake in its pricing and is extremely greedy. To summarize.... the 2023 GLC is more expensive by $3,350.00 over the 2022 GLC.......OUCH. PLUS ..... there are unscrupulous MB dealers who want to charge us extra dealer profit over this already very high and ridiculous high MSRP. I will NEVER deal with these greedy dealers. I think I will start looking for another car company who would love to have my business. I do not like Mercedes anymore.

I think the GLC is way better! The BMW, is boring out dated. I just don’t like the interior in the BMW. My wife’s had Mercedes since 2010, she had a regular GLC 300 then got her the AMG GLC 63, wow!! What a beast. Waiting for the Coupe 43 to come out. To bad no more V8 fir the GLC..

I was choosing between BMW, Mercedes, VW and Audi. And the cars were pretty similar for me. But eventually I have chosen BMW, because at some point I just realized that I always liked BMW more than any other brands. I just asked one simple question: if I buy Audi/VW/Mercedes, will I regret that I did not buy BMW?

I chose the GLC Hybrid - a lot more to the car and is a lot more comfortable to drive. I only wish they had a fast charger in the UK! They do on the continent, so why are we so disadvantaged? Thanks Mercedes!
