2019 Subaru Ascent vs Honda Pilot vs VW Atlas: Three-Row-Throwdown

We bought a '19 Atlas. It's clearly a loss-leader product for VW - we got ours for about 10k less than the Pilot or Ascent. so MSRP isn't a factor for that car. Also i hear everyone talking about how much plastic there is - i have kids - plastic is easy to wipe down. regarding storage - we didn't have a minivan before, so the Atlas feels like an upgrade, storage wise for our kids. Also cubbies are a place for kids to leave behind things like food and garbage. I don't need to spend 1 hour a week cleaning out the car.

Quite a few words to describe the Atlas on this review contradict what other reviewers say so buyers - make sure you validate for yourself re: materials/workmanship, ride and handling, engine characteristics, and whether this is a pass or fail as Volkswagen’s first effort in the segment.

I am amazed that, for a three-row SUV shootout, you forgot the most important part:. Access to the 3rd row !! Pilot has one button touch that makes it suitable for kids to use. Atlas has a clunky lever that has to be pulled when pushing the seat forward, and pulled again when putting the seat back into its position. Not user friendly at all. I know because I tried it multiple times. the ascent essentially has an unusable third row. With the headroom of 37-in, it's not suitable for adults. I had trouble getting in and out of the 3rd row and I'm not even tall. And the silly remark about the Honda Pilot having a huge steering wheel. why don't you measure the diameter of each steering wheel and report back.

I was ready to suggest Sebastian as the poster child for birth control until he picked the Subaru. Wise young man you've got yourself there! As a member in good standing of the Cult Of Subaru of course I think the Ascent is the clear choice of the three. But I've also seen enough of these comparison videos to know there's no such thing as a "best" vehicle. They're all good vehicles and the decision lies with personal choice for what you like and what you need. I have a home in the mountains with a 16% grade 1.5 mile long driveway and for me the Subaru is the best mix of road comfort, climbing ability, and dependability. Any of these would make it up (and down) the mountain but after careful nerdy research I believe the Subaru is the best choice for several reasons while respecting anyone who reaches a different conclusion for themselves. Let's face it, most SUV's never face anything more challenging than a speed bump in the Chuck-E-Cheese parking lot or parking in the grass at the kid's soccer field on Saturday morning. So as Rodney King said, "Cccccaaannnnttt we all... ccaannnt we all just get along?

All the VW dealers near me are advertising $7-9 thousand discounts on 2019 Atlases on their websites, before the military, student or supplier discounts and before you start bargaining. This makes it much much less expensive than the others (by $10-15k).

The video appears to use a 2018 Pilot for the comparison. The front grill in about 1/2 the video is the '18 model and the infotainment system is definitely the 2018 ie no knob(s).

So we make a minivan with a bigger hood and less room and don't call it a minivan even though it is a minivan that's just a little less roomy, fuel efficient, and low-to-the-road in weight balance. But they do look nicer. Probably the best example is one that's missing here: GM's Acadia/Traverse/Blazer/XT5&6/Enclave platform. Perfect example of a minivan that hates being called a minivan.

These are the three ones. I can't decide. I'm from Germany, Hamburg, so I'd really like my good Volkswagen Atlas. But I had a Subaru Forester twice, so it is a car, I really TRUST, that I could make mountain-holidays with my family. And then, the Honda is the safest, second comfortable, and so on. Love the ascent however will not buy one due to it having a 4 cylinder engine. It weighs around 4400 pounds. It has a turbo but that acts to beat that little engine up bad. You need a 6 cylinder. No manufacturer is using 4 cylinders in a 8 seater. They are all 6 cylinders up to 8 as in the Toyota Sequoia. You need a 6 with 300 plus hp. This is a very large heavy vehicle a 2.4. 4 cylinder is inadequate. I would buy one except the engine is a fatal flaw. I would rather have an aspirated 6

The CX9 may not have the outright Max interior volume, but it can still seat people comfortably like the rest. And it's 2nd row has a trick mechanism that allows people to get into the 3rd row more easily than the competition. If you watch Alex on Autos, the Ascent is tough to get into the 3rd row when a child seat is in the 2nd row

@@flarearrow9808 depends on what you call comfortably and if you plan on carrying stuff behind third row (14.4 behind third row). It does have the flip forward on the passenger side but so does the Atlas (on both sides). Mazda designs tend not to be space efficient and favor style (long nose) Ascent suffers from long nose syndrome also but for other reasons.

Atlas is the most practical by far. The third row is actually usable and comfortable, which is more than you can say for just about any other mid-size SUV (before you get to the Expeditions and Tahoes). The interior is plain but comfortable. It isn't filled with unnecessary nonsense, it's minimal, simple, and intuitive, and it won't go out of style in 3 years.

But I'm talking more about the Atlas and other 3 rows that have nice styling. But there are plenty of other choices in 3rd row SUVs that have nice styling to chose from and if you don't have to have a brand new one you can find decent deals on the used market with only a few years or around 30k miles. But in terms of pure space and money I wont argue that the van would still be the most economical and "grown up" choice to make but as a guy who wishes he could buy a new Grand Cherokee with a 6 speed manual or anything with a clutch I'm just not ready to make that choice.

I'm looking for a new SUV for my growing family and I get it's a "kids" view but for me it added a level of unprofessionalism to the whole video. If you want a recommendation, I recommend making the kid jokes at the beginning of the video then stick to the professional approach for the rest of the video.

I have been an AutoGuide subscriber since 2016, and I really enjoyed Craig Cole, Mike Schlee, Colum Wood and Sami. But now your videos are too long and lack consistency, they seem to have lost the charisma and sense of humor that made the trademark of AG for years. Also, the level of profession has been not as good as before, with too many little mistakes in the graphics, information and speech, making the videos less entertaining. Furthermore, the content needs to be more diverse, I really miss the old features like Feature Focus, The Skinny or Mean Comments. I really think you guys can do better.

Kip Lonto drove all 3 and I do disagree with their conclusions. The Sabastian reviews way wrong and his comments for sure did not hit the marks on what each is. Yes some say 3 in the 3rd row but that counts for kids only and if you put 3 teenagers in the 3rd then good luck. Oh yes kids have to be very skinny to have 3 in there. VW could have done the same and put a third seat belt in the 3rd row but they are realistic. As to leg room well in every test the Atlas has won that category and seating position and night is one of the best out there. Now for needing a refresh. All SUVs seem to be now going with hard plastic as it is a great way to be more rugged and take a beating The bottom lime the reviews they did here was clear from the beginning that they are favoring the Ascent. As to ride harshness now this gets confusing one says needs to have the VW sporty ride but his is an SUV and 9 10 reviewers have praised the ride quality of the Atlas but also said that yes the Honda is more tamed down. Let’s put it this way to each his:her own and the buyer needs to do his/her own testing as each one has a different take on what they like.
