Parts List for 1 candy cane below. You need at least 1 candy can feeder for every 4 birds. If a small flock you can use a 3" diameter pipe or less length of pipe to have the right amount of feeders for your number of chickens.
You can calculate the volume of a cylinder with the formula. V = πr^2h. 50lbs of feed has a volume of 35.5L or 2165inches^3. The volume of one 3ft, 4" diameter candy cane is 452in^3. 2156/452= 4.8 candy canes. So 50lbs of feed can fit exactly into 4.8 3ft tall 4" diameter candy canes. I tell you all this so that depending on how many birds you have you can determine how many candy canes you will need to make at what height. Also take in mind how high you will have to lift the feed to dump into candy canes.
(Example parts from Home Depot to help you find something that will work in your area):
4" diameter drainage pipe - www.homedepot....
45 degree elbow - www.homedepot....
90 degree elbow - www.homedepot....

Just assembled this 4 days ago and mounted it to the coup. Rain tested for 2 days straight and the feed was bone dry. Caveat, the feeding end is covered. I also tried this with 3 inch pipe. 4 inch is the way to go. The chickens ate out of it almost immediately and after 4 days there is zero wasted feed on the ground. Thanks for sharing.

I made these over a month ago and just did my first refill. I made two 4 ft ones and they fit 25 lbs of feed exactly. I sealed mine with silicone caulk, as I didn't have PVC sealant, and they've done very well - no spoilage or molding! The connector at the bottom is genius, my hens aren't able to pull their food out, which keeps the area neat (and so far, rat free).

if you are going to make these using 4" triple wall drain pipe like done in the video please note he's using the wrong product to connect the pieces. HDPE doesn't solvent weld like pvc so you should be using drainage adhesive which takes much longer to cure. So if you want to save time or don't want to buy a special adhesive see if your store carries 4" pvc drain pipe instead which costs about the same.

I purchased a metal feeder several years ago that was marketed as "saving" feed....seems my chicks are smarter than the inventor. This year's new batch of hens LOVE to dump cup loads of grain on the coop floor.....not anymore thanks to your ingenious feeder.

Hi Steven, I’ve been watching your gardening and farming videos since you lived in Lemon Grove, Ca. I was raised on a 3 acre family farm as a child in Spring Valley, not far from La Mesa where I was born. Have wanted a small farm ever since. My husband moved us to Oregon in 2005 and I’m finally getting that farm. Starting out with chickens. I had my husband build a coop and run very much like the one you had in California. Think it’s the best design I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing all the info. I’ll continue to watch your videos. Janet Westrup.

I decided to use your idea for my chickens. They are only approaching 4 weeks old so I believe I will either sit them on the ground at first, put a block for chicks to stand on, or just use regular feeders until they are big enough. Cheap and easy to build! Only took 20 minutes or so. Thank you for the idea

Ours are going on three years now and the chickens still love them and we have had zero problems. Make sure to glue the parts together to prevent rain from seeping in and use the 4 inch downspout attachment as shown at the end of the video and never have spilled feed. Months worth of food or more depending on how many tubes you build. We have 5 that are 4 foot in length and they hold a full 50 lb bag of food.

Hello there, I loved this idea so much I had my husband build me two of these for my five backyard birds. My problem is I can't get three of them to eat. Two birds will put their faces in if I tempt them with dried meal worms but I can't even get the other three to do that much. I'm afraid these three miscreants haven't eaten in two days (except for what was already on the ground that they spilled from my traditional feeder). How did you train your birds to use these? Thanks so much for this video. It really helped

@@billbarrett582 Hey my friend! Little update. I have 40 chickens, and with this system they do not eat any more than they shoul ! It's a great way to stockpile food and keep it safe from rats and other pests. You can get bigger pipes and install big food container upstairs if you have space. Im currently going big to 100 chicks so I hope that it will help me menage. You can also put automatic water system, it's beautiful. Come pick up eggs, once in a week or two clean, and you can afford time to market the eggs and live like a king!

i built these and love them - but sometimes it seems like the feed doesn't feed down enough to have a bunch waiting for them to eat? I think it's fine because as they eat, more comes down....just wondering? any feedback?

Try adjusting the angle of the feeder

@@jcanales520 might try adjusting the angle - it might be that they are getting plenty of food - I just want it to come down more. BUT I do love this feeder, it saves so much time with putting their food in and out so we don't have rodents, and no space taken up on the ground where they can have more space to move around.

@@NaturesAlwaysRight thank you so much. I do love your videos, excited to see how the new Homestead develops. I'm actually in Santee area of San Diego and wish you so much luck. It's impossible to live a great life in San Diego / CA - so expensive. Also, are you able to be totally off grid in Tennesee? That would be amazing!

Did anyone fix this issue? It’s a problem for my girls and I’m wondering if there isn’t a fix. Adjusting the feeder forward so it tips more toward the open end, I’m not even sure how I can do this easily to keep in place.

Fantastic idea, any problem with sparrows or smaller birds taking the food?

I never do but these feeders are located inside their inner run. There is only one door entrance to it so they would have to fly in there to gain access. I would think because of the downspout it would be hard for them to eat it without putting their whole body inside.
