The video shows the sophisticated robot application “Automatic control cabinet cabling”, which Fraunhofer IPA implemented together with the company Rittal. The software pitasc, developed at Fraunhofer IPA, is used for force-controlled assembly processes. Two UR robot arms carry out the task together. The modular pitasc system enables the robot arms to move and rotate in parallel. They work hand in hand, with one robot holding the cable and the second bringing it to the starting position for the cabling. The robots can find, tighten, hold ready, lay, plug in, fix, move freely or immerse cables. They can also perform push-ins and pull tests. Push-in poses and waypoints within the cabinets are parameters to the robot program and directly read from the digital wiring plan.
In general, pitasc is used to program force-controlled assembly tasks in a structured and modular manner. Prefabricated, reusable program modules help to implement an application faster than before. Pitasc helps to re-parameterize the program for a new variant. Using force-torque sensors on the robot, pitasc records the process forces and thus enables force-controlled search and joining strategies. The compensation of component and position tolerances ensures the distribution of forces even with sensitive components.

I'd say 80% of the panels I've built has required human interpretation due to the fact that the design documents and drawings have a lot of errors or are just not complete enough. Only after the engineers get their technical and wiring diagrams right can we start thinking about making a robot blindly follow those instructions

"design documents and drawings have a lot of errors" 1:28 I spy bare copper on the connector. Looks like the engineers forgot to add end plate to appliance list.

This way of wiring is designed for humans, instead of forcing robots into it, we should instead redesign the whole process so it is more fitting for a robot

You are right, that is also our philosophy: avoid processes if possible, if not possible design automation-friendly. Check out our ”design for automation” workshops and ”automation analysis” to find the best way to implement automation. hmm that would work until there's a breakdown in the field and you need a human to repair it.

The mechanical and control systems are nothing short of astonishing, but this has a ways to go before it is commercially meaningful. Traceability data for the pull tests is certainly a means of adding value though, as is using controlled lengths of wire for each connection

I think this is not going to work smoothly with wires and cables al cobbled up together in the cable ducts. If it is, I want to see a video cause that would mean that automation is indeed possible. Or maybe somehow there's a better way to connect devices than the traditional busbars/wires/ferrule crimp contacts.

For a minute there I thought you’d ruined my PhD. Would you like to have the robot learn to deal with nonlinear contact forces when pulling wiring through and around obstacles?
@FraunhoferIPA
@FraunhoferIPA 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dom. Don’t worry about your PhD, there is still so much to do. Currently, we do not involve any active policy learning scheme, here. We deal with the nonlinearity using robust and adaptive controls and parametrizable predefined strategies. However, I am very curious about your approach and would be happy if you contacted me for a chat. Best, Lorenz Halt Phone: +49 711 970-1031, E-Mail: lorenz.halt@ipa.fraunhofer.de

If the industrial control panel of automation machinery is assembled by a robot, people in the future would say: which one was created first? Robot or industrial automation machinery?

You would have to be making thousands of the same cabinet to make the programming worth while. Cool video though.

Taking cad drawing with defined terminal block (xyz wpr data) and some simple scripts would "automate" the programming process. Making each wire section with ferules to the correct length would be the challenging task, but again could be automated with a separate piece of equipment. One robot arms needs a 'spool-gun' of wiring and a bench top ferule feeder/crimper.
