I miss the manual transmissions. The company I work for is getting a bunch of new trucks so our standards are almost gone. If you take your cdl test in a automatic you get a automotatic restriction on your license

Hi May, typically you will know if it is an overdrive based on the model number. Please verify what you are looking to buy, you want to look for an 'O' which represents overdrive. For example- - RTLO-18913A

2:28 You guys did what a lot of people do, referred to the 'converted' manual tranny as an automatic. That's incorrect, refer to the Eaton web site. If a tranny has a torque converter it's a Automatic. The only tranny choices are Manual or Automatic. To me, there is no such thing as an Automated. As explained in the video, you pay attention to fluid level & condition & change the filter when required, the Automatic will last a long time. I like Automatics when the road is slick w/ snow/ice. Also starting on an uphill grade, the Automatic will help you all day. You'd burn out the clutch on a manual &/or break driveline parts.
@fighter4christ7
@fighter4christ7 2 жыл бұрын
The only time you’ll burn a clutch out is if you’re not using it properly. Automatics a lot of time, frequently shift back n forth when they don’t have to. That’s wear on a clutch if you ask me.
@carmiethompson2676
@carmiethompson2676 2 жыл бұрын
@@fighter4christ7 Automatics don't have a clutch, they have clutch packs but aren't subject to the heat stress of a manual clutch. Of course an Automatic will shift back & forth, you're holding a speed that's on the cusp of the gears range, a manual will do the same thing. We're only differentiating here by the operation of the tranny, not by the gear set that's designed to give a specific speed range based on the engine rpm. We're talking about a mechanical system, it will always degrade w/ use. A manual clutch will eventually burn out especially if it's subject to starting challenges like ascending a incline grade from a full stop while still on that grade. An Automatic has a fluid coupling that does get hot but doesn't perform suicide on itself. An Automatic also doesn't transmit shock loading to the drivetrain like a manual will. Drive/pinion shafts & universals are subject to far higher stress loading w/ a manual. Starting in slick conditions, muddy/icy road or work site surfaces, can be better handled w/ an Automatic because the power can be applied more gradually. Just like an Automatic in a car/light truck.
@fighter4christ7
@fighter4christ7 2 жыл бұрын
@@carmiethompson2676 I agree with the drivetrain shock, but then again if you shift correctly none of this damage or stress will occur other than the normal wear caused by use. I’ve gotten a hot clutch warning on my dash before on an automatic that only had about 3,000 miles on it as I was backing to a dock. It was tight so I can to go back n forth a bit to straighten out, but no more than usual. After seeing that I’m inclined to believe that automatics even can be over stressed.
@carmiethompson2676
@carmiethompson2676 2 жыл бұрын
@@fighter4christ7 You still didn't get my initial point. A transmissions design falls into three types: Automatic, Manual & Automated. You had a hot clutch warning light which means you were operating an Automated tranny, NOT an Automatic. An Automatic has a Torque Converter not a Clutch. So it's a fluid coupling that transmits power, not friction like w/ a clutch. An Automated tranny shifts as fast as a Driver w/ a Manual. The Automatic shifts in micro-seconds. Just like a car/light truck. Review my previous comment. Automatics are very expensive but if the maintenance schedule is followed they last far longer then 3-5 replacement clutch jobs. The fluid change will be expensive but it won't be near the cost of replacing a clutch & any machine work. By-the-By; The price of the SHELL Rotella T-6 by me went from $22.38 to $33.49/gal. in one hike!! My achin' back! F^^K Joey B.!

@@carmiethompson2676 I see. Missed that about automated, and it does shift slower like we would a manual. And I believe that transmission is terrible, especially when you engine brake downhill. Automatic would probably be less annoying, but I still prefer the manual. I much prefer being in control of what I drive. Joey B. is getting his crackhead ideas from his son’s stolen crack. Probably only going to get worse for our industry from here on out, but hopefully we get lucky and get a big turn around.

Automatic transmissions do not get better MPGs than manuals. The optimal set up for fuel economy is to spec ring and pinion gears so that at highway speed you are running low RPMs. I prefer an 18-speed to any other transmission. Ring and pinions are 3.08, up to 2.54 ratios.
@fighter4christ7

@@timmebruer5205 Yes, however when in a semi you need the control that a manual trans gives over it (imo I guess). Driving OTR with any auto trans drives me insane. That many miles with virtually nothing to do. Despite having less control, I’m bored out of my mind for hours. I’m sticking with manual. Autos are good local and tight city driving, I’ll give it that.

@@fighter4christ7 no you don't. We have both where I work and the autos get a little better than 1/2 mpg than the standards. You ain't no computer so you won't do any better. BTW my truck is averaging 6.96 mpg for the 300000 miles I've been driving it since new.
@fighter4christ7
@fighter4christ7 2 жыл бұрын
@@timmebruer5205 When I say spending more money I’m speaking of maintenance. You can take all that money you save in fuel and set it aside, because once you have a transmission problem it’s not going to be cheap to have it worked on. They are much more complicated, computerized and have a lot more moving parts. That makes it more susceptible to breakdown and more expensive to maintain. However, sometimes they do last. You never know until you put it to the test. I’m currently driving an automated and I can’t stand it. No issues yet, but I’ve only put 105K on it, just don’t like how it drives so far.
@timmebruer5205

@@fighter4christ7 so you never have to put a clutch in? What about other driveline components? An automatic is easier on them too. Just be honest, you don't like an automatic. But that's what's becoming the industry standard so unless you're paying for it you better get used to it

Hi. My truck is a 10 speed manual (Eaton) the gears stock was on high range (I was told that this was a minor issue) But The mechanic told me it's a big damage, they need to rebuild it for $ 3500 without labor!!!. I agreed. Then I found out, that he replaced it with another one, that one doesn't have a cooler (my transmission had one) tell me please if what the mechanic did is right/okay?. Should I accept this transmission ( the new one without the cooler)? He's working on the truck now, haven't finished yet.. I still have time... should I accept what he did or not?? Please reply 🙏

Hi Mustang, will do our best to answer with limited information..there should always be a transmission cooler whether its internal or external. To be clear, you should always have a transmission cooler. Let me know if were missing anything, I would ask the mechanic why hes not installing one.

I asked why did he install the one without the cooler, he replied" you don't need a cooler for the transmission, and your pipes for the anti freeze are rusty and i don't wanna mess eith it... @LRMLeasing
@LRMLeasing 2 жыл бұрын
@@mustang4928 We would never install a transmission without a cooler. Could it run? Yes, but don't expect any longevity out of it. If you are making a big investment and you want to stay on the road and out of the shop then install a cooler, (in our opinion!) If you do not the new transmission will over heat and destroy the gears inside. You could find yourself replacing it again, sooner than later. A simple call to Eaton will eliminate any doubt you may have. Eaton will even advise this shop how to install the cooler correctly if needed. Good luck!

I always thought that you get more milage on a manual rather then an automatic
@hudsondonnell444
@hudsondonnell444 Жыл бұрын
The key to getting high mileage is to get the right ring and pinion gears in the drive axle differentials. Newer engines use the combination of fuel injection timing and duration, engine static compression, and computer controlled variable vane turbos to give a broader torque band at lower rpms. Your truck should run in the torque band and not above it at the fastest highway speeds that you drive.
