Let's discuss automatic watches, also known as self-winding watches.
Automatic Watches FAQ
What is the difference between manual watches and automatic watches?
Mechanical watches are marvels comprised of springs, components, gears and screws which all work together to tell time.
At one point in history, all watches were mechanical and required manual winding in order to be powered. These watches were typically wound via the crown, which in turn tightens the mainspring inside the watch. The mainspring is the power source of all mechanical watches. Once wound, through a series of components and gears known as an escapement, the mainspring's tension is incrementally released which powers the watch.
What makes an automatic watch (also known as a self-wind watch) different is that it has a weighted rotor mounted to the back of the watch's movement. The rotor is usually shaped in a semi-circle and is connected to the mainspring via a series of gears. With the motion of your wrist, the rotor spins on an axle and in doing so, winds the mainspring which in turn powers your watch.
What is a Power Reserve?
The power reserve is the amount of time it takes for a fully wound watch to unwind when not worn. Most mechanical watches have a power reserve of between 36 and 42 hours. This means that the watch can run for that duration on a full wind. Please refer to the manufacturer's product specifications to familiarize yourself with what duration you can expect from your watch's power reserve.
Do Automatic Watches Need to be Manually Wound?
Yes, they do. Picture the mainspring inside a watch. When you first get an automatic watch, the spring is completely unwound. Moving the watch around will cause the rotor to spin, which in turn will begin winding the mainspring. While this will get the watch running it will not be enough to fully tighten the mainspring which would let you take advantage of the power reserve to its fullest capacity.
It is therefore important to first wind the crown about 30-40 times which is enough to completely wind the mainspring on most watches. Once the mainspring has been fully wound, and the watch is worn on an active wrist, the rotor will do its job by continuously winding the mainspring thereby topping off the watch's power reserve.
There is a common misconception that an automatic watch never needs to be wound. It's a mistake to think that a watch that has wound down or that is close to the end of its power reserve just needs to be worn for a while to wind itself up. While this may give you just enough power to keep the watch running in the here and now, and it may even run for a little while afterwards when it's not worn, it may not have had the chance to fully wind the mainspring and you'll experience a shorter power reserve, once the watch is removed from your wrist.
Once you have manually wound and set a watch it is now ready for use and if you wear the watch daily, an active wrist should be enough to keep the watch fully wound…even if you remove the watch overnight. However, we do advise to fully wind the watch manually if it hasn’t been worn for most of its power reserve duration
People who are not very active like those who sit at a computer for many hours a day don't always move their wrists enough to fully wind a watch in which case they may need to give it a boost every so often by winding the crown about 30 -40 times.
Can an automatic watch be overwound?
No. Automatic watches have a mechanism in the movement that disengages the winding gears from the mainspring once it is fully wound.
How do you wind an automatic Watch?
A watch is wound via its crown, usually clockwise. Keep the crown in its pushed-in position and wind the crown clockwise. If your watch has a screw-down crown, you first need to unscrew the crown before winding.
Another way to keep your automatic watch fully wound is by using a winder. A watch winder is a device that you mount your watch on for times when you are not wearing it. A watch winder moves the watch around mimicking the movements of a wrist. This is especially convenient if you own more than one automatic watch or have a watch with a high complication such as a perpetual calendar which is more complicated and takes extra time to set.

Many SEIKO automatics doesn't have any manual winding and they do just fine without. Wearing the watch daily will fully wind the spring and if the watch has not been worn for a while and stopped, it's just to swing it gently left and right until the second hand moves, set the time and wear it. The watch will be fully winded after a day or two. Many SEIKO divers have a power reserv of 48 hours.

@@anishabisht4213 no, far from that! I have had several auto watches and the most accurate was like +/- 5 seconds per day. All my quartz watches are less than ONE second a day "inaccurate". Some add one second PER week (Calypso, Decathlon...). In general quartz is accurate, reliable, cheap, simple to use and keep. Only little inconvenience: you'ññ have to change batteries every 2 years...

Biggest question in my mind that you didn't answer: what happens to automatic watches when they aren't worn, or wound (i.e. sit idle in a watch case or whatever) for months at a time. Not more than that, because I wear all my watches at least once a month. There seems to be some controversy over whether this is 'bad' for automatic watches, because the 'oils settle' or some such thing. I would appreciate it if you addressed this point.
@prestigetime

Great question. It's recommended to keep the watch wound and not let it sit unwound for long periods of time. Giving it a full wind every week can help to prevent this from happening. Alternatively, a more recommended option is using a watch winder which can keep the watch constantly wound.

Hi to all, new to watches like these. I have a question regarding winding. For automatic watch which is self-winding, assuming I wear it every single day for the rest of my life, would that mean that I never need to wind my automatic watch ever ? Because the only reason ( correct me if I'm wrong ) to manual wind an automatic watch would be when the power reserve is gone and the time completely stops. in theory any quartz watch shouldn't break if they stay without battery forever. In reality depending on the brand and the specific model, the plastics might degrade with time and fall apart, and the metals might be affected by corrosion and get unusable. The lubricants inside the movement might also get stale and sticky. Therefore quartz movements do need servicing, some more often than others

It's possible that the mainspring was never fully wound, to begin with, and that the watch didn't experience enough kinetic energy during the time that it was worn to fully wind the mainspring via the self-winding rotor. If you haven't worn the watch for a while, make sure to first fully wind the watch by turning the winding crown 20-40 times. If your wrist is active enough throughout the day, it should be able to keep it fully wound.

I have an automatic chronograph and for some reason it takes a while to startup after it has totally stopped. For example I will wind it 40 times and it does not start and then I move it or put it on my wrist and the second hand will start and then stop after a few seconds. I have move it around a few times then wind it again to get it up and going. Once it starts it runs really well and is very accurate but it is slow starting up after it stops. Also is I leave the crown unscrewed overnight the power reserve on the main spring seems to run out of juice very vast. Please advise on the order I should wind weather manually first or via the roter first.
@prestigetime
@prestigetime 5 жыл бұрын
Once the watch was fully wound down, it's always best to fully manually wind the watch. 40 rotations of the crown are good enough for a watch with an average power reserve of about 39-42 hours. Some watches have much longer springs or even more than one spring and as a result, they have a significantly longer power reserve (such as the watch featured in this video). Not sure if this is the type of watch you have but you may want to try winding it for a lot longer if that's the case and see if it helps. Once fully wound, the rotor should do its job and keep it wound provided that you are active enough while it is on your wrist.

All automatic watches should have a mainspring that is fully tightened in order for it to have enough power for the day. The automatic winding rotor is used to keep the power reserve topped up throughout the day by converting your kinetic energy into tighter spring tension within the movement.

I mean how many times it's run if I wind 50time? 2nd questions is that....if I wind today...its properly work next day also but if I will wind agin so it's defects my watch mechanism??? 3rd is that in some video first wind antilock wise and than clockwise.. why?? Every time do first anticlockwise and than clockwise???

Most watches wind clockwise. You should refer to the user manual or the manufacturer's instructions to see which direction your watch needs to be wound.

Hello I have a Tudor black bay. You say it’s not possible to overwind but at som point I feel a bit resistance. Does it mean I should stop immediately with winding the watch?
@prestigetime
@prestigetime 5 жыл бұрын
Automatic watches such as the Tudor Black Bay are self-winding and they are engineered with a defense mechanism that disengages the winding gears when the spring is fully wound. That resistance is most likely the subtle sensation that some feel when the winding gears disengage. You can stop winding it at that point since if it's probably already fully wound and there isn't any reason to keep winding the watch past that point.

Somebody needs to advise viewers or people who own an automatic watch, how to wind it with "arm action" since you can't turn the crown to wind. That is, how to wind it without an electric winder, or using the crown. Basically, I just hold the watch in my hand, and twist my wrist gently, during TV commercials. "Shaking" the watch is essentially correct (back-and-forth motions) but not done how it literally sounds. The only question left is how long or how many times to do the winding motion.

@prestigetime
@prestigetime 6 жыл бұрын
It's absolutely fine to give it a little boost every now and then. How quickly the self-winding watch will become fully wound depends entirely on how much your wrist moves during those several hours a day when you wear it. In fact, the rotor is constantly winding the watch when you wear it and there is even a mechanism built into the watch to disengage the winding gears once fully wound so there is no need to worry about over-winding it. You should, however, find out from the product manual or from the manufacturer's website what type of power reserve duration is to be expected from your particular watch. For example, some watches like the one in this video have a power reserve of several days... It's possible that winding it is unnecessary in that case. (might save you a bit of time each day and time is always precious) Hope this helps to answer your question.

i dont understand why they say to wear the watch to keep it wound after you wound it by hand? these watches that are wound by hand do not have spinning rotors like the ones where you dont need to do it by hand but do need to keep motion by wearing it ,also how long do you have to wind those rotos for them to work long and how long will this be before you need to keep motion on them again? mine dies in the middle of the night most of the time ,is this because i did not spin the rotor long enough or does it need to be cleaned or fixed? also does over winding make the time go faster?
@prestigetime
@prestigetime 2 жыл бұрын
Even automatic watches need to be manually wound by hand once in a while if the power reserve has run out of spring tension. Not everyone actively moves their wrists throughout the day enough to top up the power reserve. Additionally the longer the power reserve duration a watch has, the longer the watch work properly on a full wind without having to be wound up using the crown until the spring is fully tightened. If a watch was sitting on a shelf for a few weeks, the power reserve is likely fully unwound and therefore needs to be wound before wearing it in order to ensure uninterrupted power. Yes, moving around constantly can keep it fully wound but many people don't move as much as necessary for that to happen.

Winding it won't help. This is a quartz watch (Battery-powered) and therefore is not powered by an automatic (self-winding) mechanical movement like the ones mentioned in this video. Take it to a jeweler or a watchmaker and get the battery replaced and it should work (if that's what is wrong with it).

How often should you give your watch a "boost"/30-40 winds if you work a desk job? Thanks!
@prestigetime
@prestigetime 5 жыл бұрын
That depends on a few things. On some watches, the power reserve might be more than the average 38-42 hours. If your watch has a 7-day power reserve, for example, you wouldn't have to boost it all that often provided that you wear it every day and that you are active enough when not at a desk to keep it wound via the rotor. Too many variables in play to give a definite answer to your question but I hope this helps clarify it a bit. It's best to refer to the manufacturer's website or the manual to understand what you can expect from your watch's power reserve.

If your watch only needs 30 winds to get to full power then any time you would suspect its not at full power, you could wind it 30 times with confidence that it will be at full power. If your watch was at half power you'd only need to wind it half as much but you wouldn't be able to tell anyway so do 30 for good measure.

@prestigetime
@prestigetime 5 жыл бұрын
It's not necessary to wind it all the time if you're not wearing it. Keeping it wound just makes it convenient to put it on without having to set it again. With some watches with high complications, such as a perpetual calendar watch, it can be a bigger challenge to set all the features on the watch after it winds down. In these cases, it may be more advantageous to use a winder.

Thanks a lot for your very informative and easly understandable presentatin. I have recently bought SEIKO 5 automatic watch model SNZF15J1. As per watch description on amazon web site (from where i have bought) the power reservation capacity of the watch is 40 hours. The watch is not divivers watch and not also has screw down crown. It has a tranparnt back and and weighted semi circle roater as you have described in your presentation. Irs crown can be pulled to two different positions to manually adjust day, date and time like other autometic watches. But if its crown is pushed to last position it can be screwed to both clock wise and anticlock wise direction. My questions are 1. Can my watch be hand winded by crown ? 2. If it is not possible hand wind by crown then can it be winded to its full capacity by shaking the watch horizontally ? If it is possible to hand wind to its full capacity by horizontally shaking then for how long should be it be shaked ? 3. Is this type of shaking might be harmful for my watch ? I know my questions sound crazy but i am confused because this is my first automatic watch in my life. Thanks.

MOST automatic watches with a screw-down crown can be wound via the crown. It's always best to verify this with the instructions that came with your watch. However, for most watches with a screw-down crown, you would first have to unscrew the crown. Then without pulling out the crown further and changing the position of the crown rotate it clockwise while in this neutral position. Watch this video at 3:50 kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnLbdaVpas1oeqM and it should explain it.

@prestigetime
@prestigetime 5 жыл бұрын
Every watch is different but if your watch has a transparent case back or a skeletonized dial you can sometimes see the mainspring tightening as you wind the crown on your watch. Some people although few even develop a "feel" for it when winding the crown. They sense through their fingertips when the winding gears disengage and there is slightly less resistance when turning the crown, albeit a VERY subtle feeling in most cases. Best is to wind it 20 - 40 rotations. You won't be able to overwind it so not much to worry about there.

It has to move for quite some time to fully wind the mainspring. If it's one of the models that doesn't have a winding crown, consider keeping it on a watch winder for a day or two before wearing it. If it has a winding crown, make sure to wind it fully before putting it on your wrist.

The power reserve is what determines how long each watch will work for on a full wind. Every watch is different. You can't apply a single power reserve for an entire brand. Even a Rolex Datejust and Datejust II have very different power reserves. You would have to look at the specifications for each watch individually to find out how long it will work on a full wind.
