What struck me watching this is there is not really enough room at the side of the vault podium to abort a run without touching the springboard or vault. You can't just stop from a sprint. I don’t get the “touch the vault and you don’t get a second try”. I’m a hurdler not a gymnast so I don’t know if there’s anything else behind it, but I’m just imagining someone super competitive or desperate to win avoiding touching the table so they can try again. What I mean by that is jumping off to the side at last second or something so they don’t touch it and injuring themselves. It’s kinda the same in high jump but less dangerous in my opinion
@cdawgswizzle72293 жыл бұрын
In artistic gymnastics there is something called a “run-through” when a gymnast runs up to the vault, hurdles, and leaps aside before touching anything. It is drilled into the mind of every gymnast since they are young, it is literally the first thing you learn. It’s to avoid circumstances like this. Also, the criteria for “attempting” a vault is so strict because otherwise it is too general. They touched the springboard but not the vault? Well, there are actually some vault routines that involve completely going over the table, and it could be argued that if a gymnast messed up that routine, she should get a second turn because she didn’t touch the table. She touched the apparatuses but didn’t jump? Okay, what do you mean she didn’t jump, do you mean she didn’t go all the way over the vault or that her feet never left the table? Couldn’t it be argued that if the gymnast only jumped a little it’s okay? And then how far can that line be pushed? See, this is why they have strict guidelines. Instances like these are unfortunate, but usually very preventable by practicing run-throughs.

@@cdawgswizzle7229 this was a while ago so I don’t remember exactly what I was thinking, but I still don’t really get the no second try. Some of these rules seem to say to me that FIG isn't just worried about safety with their rules and skill evaluations. They have said theyve devalued some of Simone's skills because they don't want too many gymnasts attempting them and hurting themselves for the start value, but automatically give a zero if you touch the table? I feel like that must encourage athletes to go through with vaults they were off on from the start, and have greater injury risk.
@donaldholderdoc29103 жыл бұрын
Some find fault in not even attempting a routine. But with the risk each and every routine brings increased risk of injury. Like he said it is a strategic smart move IMO. As Nadia stated, "every gymnast has only so many routines in their life to perform before the risk is higher than that of gracefully saluting and not performing.

@vanessaruiz47053 жыл бұрын
i guess they want to prevent gymnasts from trying vaults they are not really ready for, discouraging them to land that badly; which of course can happen for many reasons but usually happens because they try a vault that is too hard for them.
@majormana13 жыл бұрын
that rule makes sense
@coolgirl3123 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure they intentionally did that to prevent gymnasts from performing dangerous vaults or being forced to perform vaults they're not ready for. A lot of athletes are pushed to do these high risk vaults because it's an "easy" way to earn a high score because even if you don't stick the landing and get deducted for execution, they'll still end up with a fairly high score. Like the Produnova Vault, there's a controversy going around of gymnast continuously attempting it because of its high starting value but very few properly land it. I think there was discussion going around awhile back of Countries without a solid gymnastic program pushing gymnasts to attempt this vault in order to gain sponsorships for their programs and I think that's why the gymnast you see attempting this vault often come from the countries you don't hear much about gymnastics wise. But again, it's a high risk vault because most attempts result in the gymnast landing on their neck or back. And if they would just receive a deduction for simply doing the 2 front flips and landing (on any part of their body), I'm sure we'd see more gymnast trying to perform it. BUT, if landing on any part of the body aside from feet first would result in a zero, it would make coaches more hesitant to push their gymnast to do and ultimately prevent more injuries.

As long as they go over the vault in an recognized attempted move. They should be at least recognized for risking their lives and crashing.

In qualifications, every country is allowed to send 4 gymnasts to each event. But out of the 4, only the 3 best scores count (it’s a 4-up-3-count rule). So if the first 3 routines have good scores/are successful, you don’t need the 4th score. Sometimes gymnasts just scratch the apparatus, because the team doesn’t need the score so why possibly get injured? It’s strategic.
