05- The Arturia MiniFreak-Oscillators: Vanalog

Here is a demonstration of the sound and functionality of the "Vanalog" oscillator present on the Arturia MiniFreak.
The theme was created out of presets and crafted patches over an assemblage of fragments of GarageBand loops. For all intents and purposes, it is a MiniFreak-Only composition.

Pro-tip: pop the "Type" orange knob off and swap it with another knob. It's way too easy to change oscillator type when you mean to adjust one of the three parameters. Helped me a lot with my MicroFreak.

@mediaphile @automaticgainsay I have put the only two white knobs available for both TYPE functions on the oscillator and FX sections. The remaining orange knob for the Matrix, and for the menu/screen knob I just put a standard black knob there.

0:58 yeah some curated or adjustable per-voice offsets to pitch, amp, filter and modulation parameters would go a long way towards putting the A in VA. But for the price, what can I expect, I guess.

Maybe layering a VA osc with a sort of similar Noise Engineeeing or Mutable Instruments osc would mix it up in a good way?

You can set that up really quickly with the mod matrix and mod source menu. Effectively you get a modulation source which scales depending on which voice is triggered, so you can simulate all that analog voice-to-voice variance. We're not at that part of the review yet though.

@@SendyTheEndless cool, if it sounds anywhere near as good as what was done on the 3rd Wave, no matter how it was accomplished, that would be incredible. So far, the VA oscs have that detuned beating, but it's not as vibrant between notes. The most obvious 3rd Wave example I've heard, for reference, is about 7 and a half minutes into Creative Spiral's video from a couple weeks ago.

The example I cited seems to exaggerate the static nature of the "before" patch, to make it easier to hear the difference.
