What is it?
This is Renault's latest attempt at a mid-size family crossover, and given the popularity of these things currently, therefore a big deal. It comes only as a full hybrid. That pitches it against the likes of the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage HEV, Nissan Qashqai e-Power and Toyota RAV4.
Renault actually designed the Austral to be launched in 2021, but then switched the sequence between this and the Megane E-Tech Electric. However much crossovers matter, it seemed more urgent to get the electric hatch out there. Fortunately the Austral doesn't seem out of date as a result. It gave Renault extra time to hone the complicated powertrain and four-wheel steering. More on that in a bit.
It's also avoiding, at the moment anyway, a plug-in hybrid version, because those are expensive and Renault reckons lots of people don't plug them in often enough to save significant petrol, or buy them for tax benefits. We can see the logic there.
What do you make of the looks?
In that interval between design freeze and launch, Renault got a new design director, Gilles Vidal. But he didn't change much. It's a handsome thing, even if it inevitably finds it hard to stand out among a sea of other crossovers. Especially in profile. Still, it has a good solid stance, the high-spec UK cars running on big wheels. Fancy LED lighting lifts the front and rear views.
And hybrid only?
Yes. It's Renault's geared hybrid system, E-Tech, in which you have a 1.2-litre petrol engine with a simple four-speed gearbox, plus an electric motor with two gears of its own. Those two have 15 different allowable permutations of drive, either combined or singly. In fact, it always starts off in electric drive because there's no clutch; another reason it's simple and light and compact. A second smaller motor starts the engine and synchronises the gearshifts.
In the smaller Renaults this hybrid setup runs at 280 volts and is paired with a basic four-cylinder engine. Here it gets 400V and a three-cylinder turbo, which is more powerful, torquey and quiet. It improves the experience and gives a useful 200bhp combined, plus up to 60.1mpg on paper.
Even more significant if it's your company car: all versions, even on 20-inch wheels with the extra weight of four-wheel steering, score under 110g/km CO2. Its hybrid rivals are mostly around 125-130g/km.
Four-wheel steering? On a family car?
Yup. It gives the Austral a city car-like 10.1-metre turning circle. It also comes with multi-link rear suspension and it's rather good, making it easier to thread through cramped streets and multistorey ramps, as well as improving main road stability. More over on the Driving tab.
What about the cabin?
It’s undoubtedly generously equipped, with a 9.3-inch head-up display, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 12-inch infotainment display, offering Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play store functionality, included as standard across all trims. It certainly all looks the part, with both screens bright and high in resolution, while user functionality is on par with, if not better than, the majority of rivals.
Otherwise it's decently roomy, while a sliding rear seat lets you share the legroom and boot space to suit, and there are some handy storage touches too. The trim and material quality is well up on most rivals too. Full details on the Interior tab.

Por fin puedo publicar mi prueba sobre el Austral de Renault. En primer lugar no le veo nada negativo al coche, ya le he hecho más de 4000 km por ciudad, atascos, salidas de semáforos (rapidísimo) en carretera normal, por autopista, subiendo y bajando puertos de montaña de 8%, cargado con 4 personas y equipaje, con niños y sus sillas, con viento huracanado lateral, con lluvia, con sol, de noche (es una delicia) y hasta con niebla jajaja. No me ha faltado nada. En cuanto al CONSUMO la media de 4000 km es de 5,7 l. eso si siempre respetando la señalización tanto en ciudad como en carretera local y autopista. RUIDOS: ninguno apreciable (claro después de hacerle mi pequeña revisión), VIBRACIONES las normales tirando a normales con uno clásico de gasolina mercedes. COMODIDAD: buenísima y la posición de conducción perfecta. Los ASIENTOS son muy agradables y muy regulables (yo le he puesto funda de asientos delanteros de cuero y un tacto y calidad suprema). Lo del masaje una pasada. No aconsejo poner la calefacción en los asientos delanteros pues se te pueden cocer los huevos jajajaj. Los asientos traseros (como le sobra mucho a las piernas aconsejo echarlos para atrás la mitad del recorrido, aumenta mucho el maletero). CONDUCCIÓN. yo llevo la ayuda en la mitad y aminora mucho la entrada del térmico. El giro del volante sin las ruedas traseras direccionables es similar a un mercedes. La suavidad del rodamiento de ruedas si el asfaltado es de los buenos es como un patinete. (Yo he conseguido que no entre nada de ruido del rodamiento al habitáculo). CONDUCCIÓN EN CIUDAD.... perfecta y muy agradable el tipo de volante al final te gusta y agrada su tacto. Hago notar que tiene un virtud que es enderezar el sólo la trayectoria por ser tracción delantera y es muy positivo. AYUDAS a la seguridad y conducción. El que más tiene del mercado automovilístico actualmente y sino decirme lo que le falta. Vamos por partes. LAS CÁMARAS son buenísimas con una resolución HD de las mejores. Ten en cuenta que lleva 4 cámaras una delantera, otra trasera y dos laterales en los espejos retrovisores. Y siempre aparcarás perfecto en cualquier sitio pues ves las líneas del parking. Y lo cuadras. Los sensores laterales, frontales y traseros te ayudan a que no des a ningún obstáculo por supuesto. La cámara trasera tiene la función de ver el remolque de la moto durante 30 seg. a ver cómo va. Los espejos son inteligentes pues te avisan de los automóviles, motos, etc... que se acerquen por los laterales (detección de punto muerto) Y tienen además de gran angular para ver mejor la función de ver los bordillos marcha atrás (eso si tocando el botón correspondiente al espejo) Y la cámara de 360 º es una pasada pues ves si tu suegra está mirándote cuando aparcas, jajaja. Otra ayuda es el control de velocidad y reconocimiento de señales de la vía. Y otra es la de aproximación a un camión o coche que vas a adelantar. El coche se pone a su velocidad y si decides adelantar el Austral recupera la velocidad si te cambias de carril. Lo de advertencia de si pisas la raya de la mediana no me convence aunque te avisa con vibraciones en el volante, pero yo no soy de los que necesitan dicha advertencia, pero no está mal. Lo de detectar si hay una bici cruzando por delante o un peatón se activa a una velocidad determinada y no lo he probado por si acaso jajaja. También advierte de coches que se aproximen por detrás cuando sales de un aparcamiento en batería. LLAVE O TARJETA.... pues es una maravilla porque te detecta enseguida y abre el coche cuando estés encima , pero yo se lo he quitado porque el ascensor está muy cerca de donde dejo el coche y me lo abre al entrar al ascensor. Es demasiado sensible. Cuidado que no pueden estar muy cerca el móvil y la llave porque no la detecta el sistema. MALETERO.... perfecto pues me cabe mi bici eléctrica plegable y las maletas. Hay una forma de hacerlo de 530 l. y es echando los asientos traseros como todos los coches lo llevan. El mío llevaba rueda de repuesto y cabe en los huecos un montón. Hasta la caja de herramientas. A mi me lo entregaron de regalo con una bandeja de goma con forma y logo que queda chulísima. ESTÉTICA Y PRESENCIA.... chulísima es lo primero que te entra de este coche. Solo compáralo con los "otros" y verás las diferencias y sobre todo de noche el tipo de led que lleva no es de puntitos led sino liso y dinámico. LOS FAROS. son led por supuesto y lleva 6 para la luz de carretera. Y además se iluminan los faros laterales cuando giras el volante. Tienen una particularidad que si te deslumbran por los letreros y señales aminoran automáticamente la intensidad. Nunca deslumbran a los que vienen de frente. Y tiene la opción de larga adaptable cambia si ve que viene otro de frente a corta. Puedes bajar las luces cortas si llevas remolque pesado. CHULADAS DEL COCHE.... si paras en un semáforo y aprietas el pedal un poco el coche se para y arranca suavemente en eléctrico. Si estás bajando un puerto es muy fácil retenerlo pues tienes 4 niveles de retención con las levas. Si vas en autopista y quieres el mínimo consumo tienes la opción de conducir a VELA (sin ninguna retención) jajaja cosas de Renault. Eso si si vas a desviarte y salir de la autopista o autovía puedes retener el coche como tu quieras sin pisar el freno con las levas del volante. MODOS DE CONDUCCIÓN.... pues puedes configura y elegir el que más te guste y el más económico. SISTEMA DE PANTALLAS pues tienes infinitas soluciones, hasta ver el mapa del tiempo. Y el sistema de navegación es doble el del coche y el de tu móvil, acojonante. Radios las que tu quieras, música lo que quieras, etc.... en definitiva el mejor hasta ahora ( a no ser que lo copien). MANTENIMIENTO el líquido del limpiaparabrisas y las que te indique el programa. Pero una al año y yo tengo 5 gratuitas y completas. Y garantía de 8 años en la batería. OBSERVACIONES Y CONSEJOS.... yo le he puesto una protector de pantalla en el cuadro de instrumento mate para que no refleje y otra en la pantalla grande para protegerla. Yo le he puesto una apoya codos en la consola y otro en la puerta par a conducir mas relajado y seguro (no afecta al airbag por supuesto) . Aconsejo poner esterillas de goma y la del conductor recortada en la parte de los pedales y sujeta a la original para que no se mueva. Hay protectores del túnel trasero que protege de las pisadas. Por seguridad le he puesto en las puerta avisadores luminosos intermitentes de puerta abierta que se apagan al cerrar la puerta. Siempre poner en automático las luces pues te las puedes dejar puestas y así se apagan. Todo está comprado en TEMU y en AMAZÓN. COSAS A MEJORAR.... la rumorosidad del motor térmico y que no sea tan "adictivo" el coche.

Can’t believe they’ve put the parking brake switch back on the dash, I had this on laguna2 and was relieved when it was put behind gear selector on Laguna 3so you can operate it without doing sit-ups, now they’ve gone backwards

Nous les Français, nous sommes vraiment à la ramasse quant au niveau des formes, possibilités d'utilisation du véhicule et équipements intérieurs : Nul à chier ce Crossover et à 50 000 euros, je n'y mettrais pas plus de 20 000 euros. La Nouvelle Renault : Encore un Bruit qui court !
