Yessir. A big one... most of these cars come with the sst gearbox. Also I just had what I call “sensor roulette” They put so many damn sensors on the car it’s completely over complicated the car and turned it into a nightmare to work on. Mine is solid, as good as one can be in my opinion... now I’m paranoid to fully send it

Great video, however a few things that I would like to point out as a shop owner that primarily works on the 4G63 and the 4B11 platforms. 1. The master cylinder does and will go bad eventually, so an upgraded unit from AMS,MAP and MAGNUS are a great upgrade for these cars. This uses the older CT9A chassis aluminum CMC with an adaptor plate from either of the manufacturers that I mentioned. 2. The fuel pump relay, along with the timing chain issue are an issue associated with the earlier Evo X's. However, every owner should upgrade the relay for the sake of their own peace of mind. The chain issue is only for Evo X's pre 2010. The 2010 and older vehicles feature the newer/revised chain. 3.The diff pin issue is not as common as most think. However, we always address this during a transmission build. I have personally built more than half a dozen 700+ WHP X's with the stock transmission without having the diff pin failure. 4. The AYC pump rarely fails on us, however we are in southern California with no snow or salt on the roads, which is the primary killer of these pumps. 5. The MAF sensors almost never fail. 6. The exhaust manifolds are almost ALWAYS cracked upon removing the upper heat shield, we usually upgrade this to a tubular unit or a cast unit such as the MAP one. Very awesome and information packed video nonetheless. I just wanted to address some of the things that I see more commonly than others. Cheers :) -Roni A SpeedLAB,inc

I wanted to add that the knocking noises in the suspension at low speeds is usually due to the front strut top mounts. My car was knocking like crazy after I bought it and replacing those completely fixed the issue and it's been totally silent for the last 20k miles.

Yeah I think people need to understand that for a lot of cars, proper maintenance is key to keeping it good. For a car like an evo, if you want to mod it you have to spend money for the good stuff. You spend more money initially but you won't have issues long term. It's all about care and what and how you spend your money. You buy cheap parts you get cheap results.

@@ThreeDPrintDesigns Whp and hp is not the same. One’s to the wheels and the other to the crank; either way you’re right, I have seen the same thing happen even at 400whp, but that’s due to factors such as bad fuel mixture, bad spark plugs, bad fuel relays, etc. There are many factors that can cause this. The block is able to handle up to 650whp with the proper set up, but at that point you’d be pushing it to its limits.
@ThreeDPrintDesigns
@ThreeDPrintDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
I certainly know the difference between whp and crank hp. I've got much experience with high Hp. Gte, built is300, Evo x, 2014 Subaru wrx. Would never recommend anything over 500whp and maybe 350-400 wheel torque in a stock Evo. You might be the lucky guy running 600, but not for long.
@chincemagnet
@chincemagnet 3 жыл бұрын
400 is typically the limit all the tuners and builders I’ve talked to are comfortable with on a stock bottom end. Of course it also Felton how you’re making boost. If you have a gigantic turbo that’s not exceeding 25 psi, where the power comes on way high up in the rev range, it would hold up to that better than trying to run 35 psi on a smaller, faster spooling, turbo for similar peak power.

I'm making almost 400whp in my X. It's capable of a ton more. 550 plus keeping torque around 400wtq. It also just depends on your tuner. If you have torque coming in later than your good. People go wrong bringing the torque in way to early which is hard on the car. Ive had zero issues in 83k miles on my Evo. It's been launched 10-15 times and I'm still running the stock clutch I bought it with. AYC pump tends to be an issue. Doesn't like colder climates therefore they tend to go out from time to time. Stock for stock, bolt on for bolt on the X makes more power over the 4G. Fluids need to be done more often than your average car. I do fluid changes(trans, tcase, diff, etc) every 10-15k miles.
@chincemagnet
@chincemagnet 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I’m having some issues, and have in the past, with my AYC pump. Stupid things that shouldn’t be happening like the front diff not unlocking and AWC not working. I’m not quite sure what fixed the front diff issue, but bleeding can help the AYC if it gets air or moisture in the system, but they do die and they’re goddamned expensive

You are the only evo owner I know that is talking with some sense when it comes to tuning your evos torque! Alot of people like to talk shit about the transmission. Nobody is willing to learn there transmission to understand why the gears can only take but so much torque. Just like with my Evo9 the 6 speed can hold 290lbs torque reliable. But also I autocross my car and I know the risk associated with launching the car and my transmission and transfer case usually last me 2 seasons before I have to rebuild it again!

Despite the "issues", the Evo X is still an extremely reliable car - and for the low maintenance price tag compared to others in the class. It's not as high maintenance as a Ford RS, and arguably at par (or, barring differences, trade blows) with the issues on a Scooby. Let's not even talk about Audis or BMWs here, because if you want to argue reliability and TCO --- get real. I often wonder what people do to these cars to abuse them to the point of so much failure, but the concept hasn't changed from the early days of anything mechanical -- regular maintenance and servicing by qualified technicians will extend the life of your vehicle. Anyone who gets service done by bona-fide techs will already have been informed about relay issues and most of the other known common serviceable points of failure for an Evo X. That's what TSBs are for. It's easy to want to go fast on an Evo, but to neglect the fact that more power demands more safeguards - is just silly. And, sorry to everyone who has to deal with winter road conditions. I think it doesn't matter what make/model - rust permeating critical systems under the vehicle will always be an issue. Last point (just a quick FYI, really) - but Recaros are all standard on an MR. And like the USDM GSR, they didn't pass muster with the NHTSA and therefore US buyers got screwed over on '15s and FEs. However, FEs and MRs in all other markets (including CA) still had them in 2015. Though not as nice as the all-leather versions, the fact that you have Recaros so makes the driving experience.

Correct if I’m wrong but I believe the 2010+ evo’s have their timing chain updated and does not have the stretch issue anymore. Also, I believe the AYC pump has a much higher chance of failing depending on where the car has lived it’s life at such as the snowy/salty roads up north versus places that rarely sees harsh conditions. So happy to have seen this video, just had to replace some of the suspension components in the front of my car, and now I have to get my trans overhauled because I have a horrible shutter driving it. It is nice to know the crack in my manifold is a common thing and I just didn’t do that myself. Great vid, def saving for later!

some of these were actually addressed by mitsubishi. i must have taken my car in for Recall servicing a dozen times! ( i have the 2010 gsr) Yes my shocks gave out so fast. replaced with coilovers, most annoying thing for me was the Trunk lid started to break on both sides. big cracks down the side. I think from the weight of the massive spoiler and the force from the trunk closing.

Lol, you talk about the 4B11T from an Evo X while showing a 4B11 base Lancer engine in the video. The most notable issue with the Evo X is the SST transmission in the MR model. It has a few common failures (i.e. shift fork), which are difficult and very expensive to fix. Btw it's an Evo TEN. X as in Roman numerals.

@@markg9401 It doesn't have any heat issues if used properly (bringing it up to operating temps before heavy driving and using S-Sport). Improperly modified/tuned cars can have issues. However, the SST does have issues with cold starts in extreme low temps. Block heater is a must.

I’m sure white Lithium Spray Grease from Blaster would do the trick. Spray to top and bottom hats and the shaft of the strut. If the knocking noise comes back (very well could come back) you will most likely need to rebuild them.
