Rule 1…don’t sign anything. #2…look around inside the showroom, for cubicles vs offices(with doors). Doors are the enemy. #3…when you’re at an empass, raise your voice and disrupt the other cubicles. We couldn’t reach a deal and they wouldn’t give my back the key to my possible trade in, so I began yelling for my key, until someone arrived and asked me to leave. I got my key and left.

Also with Carmax be sure to look at the Autocheck report. A lot of their cars have had damage in their brief lives. After slogging through new car dealership shenanigans Carmax’s prices start to seem reasonable. Compared to a new car at MSRP, maybe with a markup, delivery fees, and thousands worth of dealer add-ons Carmax can be a good alternative if those dealerships refuse to give you a fair price. If nothing else Carmax cars do tend to be among the highest quality used cars available.

They bought them for 12k off of MSRP of new 120 days ago and they thought they were stealing them from the past owner. Their computer price models had some past looking window, and we as car guys know cars are worth what you can convert them for cash TODAY. The past owners got a 1k/mo lease and enjoyed the new truck smell and carmax bailed them out of half the drive off the lot deprecation, as the owners saw I could get away with a fresh truck with the same thing if carmax stays this dumb. Carmax must be to dumb to read the tea leaves and to slow to get rid of stale inventory. Carmax float (their working cap) is at 3.5% at max so they can afford to sit on cars at the rate of inflation, but they cannot take a 15% cut used car prices sticking until the end of the year, because the balance sheet will look like broken company to shareholders. The carmax ride could end quickly, once the wall street decides a private equity firm would at least return the land and inventory value.

I work at a dealership. Under the advertised price we write Documentation fees: 0 Extra hidden fees: 0 We have increased our sales by at least 30% over the past year by getting rid of all the fees. And we get customers who say they chose our dealership because of zero extras.

I own an advertising/marketing firm and we work with a dealership. This is exactly what I advised them to do and same exact results. It seems so painfully obvious that you can set yourself apart from the entire pack by doing so, but many dealership owners are older, rigid guys who don't actually understand how to be nimble in changing markets. It's sad because it hurts the entire sales force.

That ad in the paper happened to me back in 2011 I believe. I was looking for a Camaro and went to Sanderson Ford in Phx, AZ and they did this. Got me in and come to find out they didn't have it and had another one priced about $5k more. At this point I knew to just walk out because I have dealt with bs dealerships like this. I went to another dealership, can't remember the name but it's off I-10 in Avondale if anyone is reading this, and they had a Camaro I liked. However I notice the miles on it for being a 2011 where pretty high and it was the base model. I realized it was probably a rental. So I told them I would pass after they confirmed to me it was a rental. They then came back to me and asked what other Camaro on the lot did I like. I said the RS 2011 one, however, it was $4k more and I wasn't going to pay that and was about to walk away again. About 5 minutes later they came back and told me they would sell it to me for the same price as the other one. It only had 3k miles on it. I seem to get lucky on used cars which I have no clue how lol (my 300 then dodge durango). Probably because I don't take bs and I am not going to just say yes to stuff because I want whatever car is there. People just need to realize they can walk away. F them dealerships. Shop the hell around. There are plenty of them out there. With the internet nowadays there is no excuse on getting a bad deal. There are too many channels like Lucky's that help you not to get scammed.

I just went through all of this and here is what i did. Some of the stuff that he is saying is spot on. Everyone is showing the internet price as if the vehicle has no optional upgrades, and then at the dealership they tack them all on. You don't care, and you don't want to pay for it. Also you don't have to. The price is what you are negotiating, not just any price the OUT THE DOOR PRICE. Use that exact wording. Once you have this price where you want it, get it in writing. Anyone worth visiting will send it to you before you set foot on a lot, so request to e-sign the paperwork. Once you have that, and assuming that you have whittled them down far enough, they will require that you finance through them. This is because they get a kick back on the financing. This will come with a high rate. Then, assuming you can, refinance or pay off the vehicle. Voila! You just got the deal you wanted.

Dealerships are lying... no kidding... I thought when I initially walked into the dealership last week and they offered to get me a coffee and danish they were nice guys. When they told me the car I was looking for had just sold-they generally felt bad. The nice salesman just happened to have a car very similar, but it was 3k more and it had more bells and whistles. When he told me my trade in really wasn't worth what KBB and Edmunds said it was worth-he brought up all this auction data from all over the country that explained everything. When he presented a sales contract to me and it had a 600 doc fee, 399 electronic filing fee, 200 nitrogen filled tire fee, 199 VIN etching fee, some special paint sealant for 699, some car theft tracker thing for 999, he explained these add-ons were only for my benefit-and he was looking out for me- it sure made me feel they had my best interest at heart. I've purchased most of my cars the past 20 years out of state. It seems that if they know your local the games are bigger and better, when I call out of state dealers I just tell them that I'm out of state and will not be just "dropping by" the dealership to have a look around. Straight up if you want to sell me this car send me a signed proforma invoice for the car. They either will play ball or pass and that is the end of that. If they pass they usually will call you a day or two later to see if you're going to cave, I just tell them the same thing, send me the invoice or don't bother me. I'm a big A.H. to franchise car dealers. Some will play ball right out of the gate when they know you're not local, others not so much.

Cars are still crazy high, when it comes to those adds the dealer's do it because it works and gets people in the door, its on the consumer to say yes or no to continue with the purchase. I have gone in and told the dealer if you get me into the one I want at this price we have a deal otherwise I'm looking somewhere else. Trucks are in high supply now because they are extremely overpriced

A few years ago I purchased a new Toyota Corolla at a Toyota dealer. Just down the street there was a Carmax. Carmax had the same model year Corolla with 12K miles and a lower trim for sale at a higher cost than I paid. Every time I see a vehicle with a Carmax license frame I chuckle a bit knowing they paid too much

Lucky, do you think CarGurus should post more detailed pricing on their listings? That would help with transparency. Like sales price, fees, estimated tax title license, estimated out the door price? Having dealers enter all that detailed info on their listings would show customers where stuff is purposely left out.

Hi Lucky. I'm a big fan of your vids. Keep up the good work! You asked for comments about experiences with advertising. I remember about 10 or so years ago reporting an ad from a Kia dealership that advertised $5500 off on an Optima. The fine print stated (like you pointed out in your examples) that one would need to qualify for all rebates. I get that, you never know when you'll find that one person who ... never mind, nobody ever qualifies for ALL of them but what did make it FALSE advertising in this case was that two of the biggest rebates were MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE! That means NOBODY actually could have qualified because Kia would only approve ONE of the two $2500 rebates and NEVER both. I reported them to the appropriate state agency and the only thing that happened was the dealership called me and gave me the old "what's it going to take to sell you this car today" schpeel. I'm pretty sure they were willing to take the full advertised amount off for me but I just laughed and told them I was no longer interested in that car and that I was just reporting their illegal ad in hopes they would get in trouble. I called that agency back the next day with a WTF inquiry and they just shrugged their shoulders (yes, I could tell over the phone) and said that's how they handle it. So much for the "excess government control" everyone is always worried about!!

Once I get there they say that there is a market correction fee for 6 thousand dollars extra ( on a $9000 car) I obviously cursed them out and reported them to Toyota. PD: Corporate Toyota didn’t care

So yeah my stupid fault for not reading the contract but the little bit of money they made off of me didn’t compare to the amount of business i sent away from that place, every friend and family member looking to buy a new car i told not to go there. 3 years later i traded it in and got a new f150 and went somewhere else

What I've been experiencing is dealers advertising their cars online for a certain price and having a payment processing section where you can input exactly what you're willing to pay and how long the terms of your lease or financing are to see exactly what you would be paying for the car. It's supposed to give the illusion of transparency. They also will allow you to select the offers that you qualify for once you submit that payment , it disappears quote on quote and the dealer will reach out to you trying to get you to go for a different vehicle at completely different numbers than what their website payment processing widget says you would pay. I've even gone as far as to screenshot exactly what their site say that my payments should be only for them to either stall me for a week or completely ignore it and try to get me to come in to look at vehicles and not even focus on the vehicle that I'm actually reaching out to them about.

@Nicegram-me_LuckyLopez. Lucky, abnormal 3 weeks of 50 degree weather in February and March. But nothin' but tire kickers for days. We don't finance or usually take trade ins. Lots of repeat / referral business since we have been in business for 25 years. Getting people who haven't bought for 7 years and can't understand why they can't buy an SUV for under $10,000 ( we have 8 economy cars for that price.) Thankfully, no floorplan, but we have only bought 3 cars since Jan. 1 because we have 25 economy cars in the back to get ready and we have to sell cars on the front. Once a week I get phone calls asking for our $3,000 cars.....

As a small independent dealership, I set my markup based on a flat amount. My prices are lower, and I have customers traveling up to 4 hours to my place. Advertising is causing an increase in my prices. The cost to list on car sites is $3k min a month. I have to factor that fee into the purchase in order to make my flat amount.

Drive across town? Try West Palm Beach to Miami (an hour and a half) only to be told that car was gone and, even after, the sales person told us on the way there they were "holding" the vehicle for us (we gave him our credit card #). AND, he texted a photo of the car right after he hung up with this. Poof...no vehicle so we wisely didn't engage with the guy and drove straight back home without even saying a word, did not respond to his texts and didn't answer his follow up phone calls. But still 3 hours of driving...

As a former dealer tech, I say this. If you can save money driving out of town to buy a vehicle, then do it. But take all your problems to that dealer. You took your money to them, take all your complaints and issues to them, too. Don't go to your local dealer and give them a hard time because something went wrong with your vehicle, or because you don't know how the Sync system works because the salesperson at the selling dealer didn't demonstrate how any of the systems on your vehicle work. There is nothing worse than a visiting owner who expects dealer personnel to spend the time showing them how their vehicle operates and then yells at them because they're too stupid to take instructions. They also think they're entitled to a loaner or think the part their vehicle needs should be removed from an in-stock unit. We even had some that demanded the dealer make the monthly payment because the parts were on national backorder. All this from people who didn't buy their vehicle from the dealer I worked for. As a customer, you have every right to do with your money as you please, just don't go giving another dealer your bullshit ! They will honor warranty work on your vehicle. Just don't go pushing your luck, making demands from people you didn't give your money to. They will send you down the road. You can go on Yelp! and whine about it all you want. It's not like you bought a vehicle from your local dealer to begin with because you'll do the same thing the next time you buy another.

Easy solution if you know what kind of car you want, ask for out the door pricing and they will give you a worksheet writeup with all of the fees, taxes, etc. Bought my last 6 cars this way and only had 1 dealership try to change the deal with i went in to pick it up. All the rest had the paperwork done, i was in and out of the dealership in about 30-60 minutes.

this is what I learned from selling cars throughout college. There are no sales. OEM's manufacturer the cars year round and slap a sticker on the door window. the "sales" stem from dealership discounts and OEM rebates. Oem's can also offer lower apr's for incentives. cars would come from subaru and there would be no rhyme or reason as to what drives off the car carrier. The cheapy trims ie DL's were few and far between. car dealerships are innately slimy. It is a big ticket item and people cant decide what to eat for dinner so sales people pressure buyers to decide and buy. Management is archaic and stuck in the fifties or before. effectively, sales people are on pure commission. You get a draw but once you sell, you pay your draw down with your commission. I sold a car and had to pick a car up at another dealership. Well I received nothing for my time to drop a car off and pick one up. that is unethical. we used to put $99/month on the front window of the dealership. we would explain, you can get your monthly payment anywhere you want depending on how much you put down. it is a disgusting business but I am glad I did it because I will never get ripped off getting any car.

We bought a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee several years ago (paid in full as we had the money). However, before we could pick it up, we were told that someone had "sold it out from under us". The dealer made sure we knew he went across town to go get another one just like it. I sometimes wonder if that was a bait-and-switch, as when it failed, it failed big. We sold it to our next door neighbor (No, not a lemon sale, he'd been under the hood.) Turned out there was not one system that didn't need major help. Fortunately, his brother was a mechanic/technician. They now use it as their daily driver. Does this kind of thing happen often? We loved that Jeep enough that we bought a new one; this one's a Renegade.
