As someone that's created calibrations for engines, there's little benefit to using premium fuel in a car that doesn't require it. while higher octane fuel allows the engine to run closer to MBT without knock, the allowable range for ignition timing (and boost curve in forced induction engines) in the calibration has to be written to take advantage of it. An engine that isn't calibrated for higher octane fuel (91/93 or E30+) isn't going to allow for enough timing advance to make a noticeable power difference. Otherwise awesome advice David!

I try to use Top Tier rated fuel to keep the injectors and valves clean and working like new. Combine your errands into on trip so you are driving on a warm engine more often. Coast up to red lights instead of racing up to them and slamming on the brakes. Most importantly, don’t let your wife drive your car. I can get the RAV4 hybrid to 40mpg then when I get in after she uses it it’s down to 35. 🤨

EPA claims my 21 Rav4 LE fwd 35 mpg Hwy. When I bought it New, the dealership forgot to air down the tires , 50 psi, BUT it got 43 mpg on my drive back home. It's currently at 56k miles and I Always keep the tires at 45 psi and I drive mostly on the highway. Even with weight and OEM roof rack my fuel economy is consistently 40-46 mpg; I verify at the pump ⛽. I get 45-46 mpg with A.C. ON. My record is 48 mpg Turlock to San Diego Feb 2024. 😂😂😂

@AH-bm4ts The original tires Firestone Destination LE 2 has slightly more wear in the center. I rotate them every 5k miles. Warranty is 5 years 60k miles. At 56k miles with tread is still above the wear markings. I haven't measured exactly how much but based on my personal experience, No major adverse effects for my current vehicle.

All of these are great points David. As an EV owner the only thing I could add is there is a sweet spot as far as miles per hour that either an ICE or an EV will benefit with the most miles per gallon/kwh. Once you determine that target mph that is your ideal speed,you can optimize efficiency of either energy source. 18:26

I'd also add planning your day or week ahead of time to maximize trip efficiency. For example do your errands in an order than minimizes travel distance and avoids rush hour traffic. A little planning goes a long way.

Awesome video. I just found out recently about the added fuel efficiency by using premium fuel. For many years, I used to think that using premium fuel would just be unnecessarily wasteful. Now I agree with David especially if premium gas (Costco) is a lot cheaper than regular Shell gas.

I live in South Africa and downsized my car from a Ford Kuga to a Toyota Urban Cruiser. I did this because both our children left the house and have their own cars. We did not need the bigger car aby more. I miss the Kuga's power but the fuel consumption in this Toyota is excellent at around 15.7km/liter. I also do a lot of bass fishing so needed a higher vehicle to deal with some of the dirt roads on the farms i fish. I wanted to buy the Corolla cross but is too low. Some really good comments given here but i also believe the way you drive (heavy foot) and tyre pressure stands out for me.

Smaller lighter wheels made the biggest difference in fuel economy for me. My 2019 Subaru WRX STI came with 19” wheel with 245/35R19 tires at 52 lbs. I changed them to standard 18” WRX wheel with 245/40R18 tires at 48 lbs. I consistently get 2 MPG better fuel economy, car rides smoother too.

So, for _just_ the wheels themselves, that's 4lbs x 4= a 16lb weight saving, yes? Now, I don't know about the actual tires' weight difference, but *I'm **_guessing_** that 16lbs wasn't what made the 2 MPGs difference?* I've been reading lately about smaller wheel / higher profile sidewall tires making better fuel economy on a number of brands and models of vehicles. And it's got me wondering what's actually saving the gas. --> Could it be the *different type of tires?* (ex: tread pattern / softer or harder rubber / stiffer or softer sidewall / eco vs. regular tire? --> Could it be some smaller wheel/higher profile tires *are narrower,* therefore less friction on the pavement? Hmm....I thought I had another possibility but it escapes me. But whatever the reason, others doing as you have have reported similar results, but somehow it just seems to my unscientifically trained brain that it *_can't_* be just the 16lbs? Because then one would also get 2 MPGs better by just taking 16lbs of weight out of the car (or putting 16 _extra_ lbs into the car and getting about 2 MPGs _worse_ mileage).

Thank you for all your videos, always enjoyable! Fishing suggestion for you as I believe you are an East coaster. At the east end of Lake Ontario is a smallish river called the “Salmon River”. Mid to late October the steelhead start to enter the river. Water temp at that time is still warm enough for the best fight. There are numerous guides in the area, (mostly fly fishing) but I would highly recommend Jay Peck proprietor of “Lost Rivers Fishing”. He also guides for some sizable brown trout on the southern shore of the lake.

Removing unnecessary items also helps with acceleration, cornering, braking and wear/tear on tires. I always remove as much items as possible.

Hybrids, trucks, and high compression engines will benefit more from premium, but either way premium makes engine wear more even and prevents knock and high mileage ticking from punching it. Which most of you do in your "econo boxes". Doesn't matter much since most people don't plan keeping a vehicle long runs anymore. Also clean your oil! Anything past 5k is bs unless it's a non turbo hybrid.

The auto start/stop systems are an irritant. By that, I mean that you can tell (to various degrees) when the engine restarts and the transmission engages. The other thing (also varies by implementation) is there is some lag between lifting up on the brake pedal and moving forward. One other thing that I notice (again this varies on where you live and how the stop lights are timed and synced), but many times the off is only for 30 seconds or less. The 3% - 5% estimated fuel economy increase for most areas is a bit more than I think you can get.

David, I agree with all your 'factors' but I have a fuel efficiency strategy that is far more RADICAL to add to the list: I actually treat the speed limit like a .............speed limit. In other words, if the sign says 50 kmh, I drive 50. If it says 80 kmh, I drive 80 and craziest🤪 of all, if it says 100 kmh on a four lane highway, I drive 100. I describe this strategy as radical because hardly anyone is doing it. BTW all my crazy, slow driving is done in the slow lane. 😉 Speaking of crazy, have you ever noticed the most aggressive and careless drivers are the ones who complain the most about high gas prices? 🤔

On this point I have a new land cruiser and at 55 mph I get about 5 mpg better than 75+ mph. That boxy design really does have a lot of air drag at high speeds so just slow down a bit and you will save a lot of gas

I fish trout streams in upstate NY that have short dirt roads to access parking areas that often have washed areas from rain/snow, nothing terrible. I am considering a lift kit of 2-3” for better clearance but am concerned about loss of mpg in general driving. Your thoughts?

I use non-ethanol fuel when i can. The recipe i have used for years is. Iridium spark plugs, good synthetic oils. Maintenence is key like you said. I aslo usually refresh the cooling system. I often drop the temp a little by using a coolant additive. Make sure to reseach compatible chemicals when doing so. My awd flat 6 get 22mpg average and I'm a pretty spirited driver. You can say. The best i got was about 24-26. My last one i got 27 and that one was lifted. I'm still shooting for 30. My 95 Cadillac sts with a V8 that had the atkins cycle. I got 27mpg hwy 22 city. It got 16 when i got it with 80k, and it smoked oil when shifting. I did use some additives for that. They have their place.

So it's interesting looking at the dyno numbers on that T24A-FTS This is regarding your comment about higher octane versus lower There's a substantial degradation in engine power at 85 octane, improving a lot at 87, slightly higher to 89 and slightly higher yet at 91. I don't believe anyone has tried at 93 or 95 octane. It is somewhat challenging to get that type of data because you'd essentially have to run many tanks of fuel through the engine to ensure it was washed out of the previous grade . But I'm sure there's bench testing data that will come out as the engine becomes more popular.

Mr. Chao, I wish you had gone into more detail about the *air conditioning / windows open* aspect---specifically, the relative fuel saving (or not) of having A/C on during *highway speed* driving vs. windows open. Because I've read and heard many times over the past number of years that it's more (or similarly?) gas efficient to have the A/C turned on at highway speeds than having the aerodynamic drag of open windows or sunroof. Good tips, David! With a hybrid system, doesn't the start/stop function and driving around town cause more water to be created which can get into the oil? It seems like the engine never really gets the opportunity to come up to a normal operating temperature which would allow it to burn off the water caused by combustion. Thanks.

Most hybrids, unless they are the plug in models, will run the ICE until to gets it to operating temperature before allowing EV mode. For extremely short trips, yeah it could be an issue, but that’s also true for ICE only vehicles as well.

Engineers already account for this by running the engine longer when the engine is colder to prevent an issue. It takes a lot longer than people think for an engine to cool down after coming to temperature. It wouldn't cool down enough in between turning off and on to be an issue during regular driving.

Can't speak to other products but modern Toyota/Lexus hybrids run multiway coolant distribution valves to ensure rapid engine warm-up to optimal temperature. This will help to mitigate crankcase condensation (as well as fuel dilution of engine oil due to piston ring blow-by). Of course such issues are further mitigated by 6 monthly oil changes.

Make sure the fuel injectors and engine air filter are not clogged. Understand the terrain of the road so that you don't accelerate before the road goes downhill. If you are at a considerable speed before going downhill, you end up braking a lot instead of stay in gear and letting the car glide downhill with minimal braking.

I drive a Ranger 2006, I only carry the tools that I will need depending on the job, never drive over 60mph, or turn the A/C on and I removed the front right seat and the full size spare tire and the truck is manual. Yield 400 miles per gallon, around $40.00 I put around 600 miles a week. Truck has 283 000 miles and runs good. 👊🏻💥🇲🇽. Rangers are the best 👍🏻

Another You tuber said it is not good for the internal components of the engine to run higher octane in a car that isn't designed for it. I have a turbo car and it is recommended to use 91 in extreme conditions to prevent knock so I use 91 in the summer and 87 in the winter. I get better mpg in the winter because of the colder intake air and the A/C is not being used.

Also electrical items that draw a lot of current, heaters, fridges etc, can also cause a slight increase in fuel use due to the extra drain on the battery, which the alternator will provide more charge to the battery, which in turn puts extra load on the engine.

Until recently, I never had a car with the *_stop/start_* feature (which I really wanted, by the way). Yet, even without that feature, I have always been one of the *_very_* few who turn off the engine at railway crossings when it's a long train. I've often counted maybe 15+ cars all idling for at least several minutes in very temperate weather (i.e. not hot nor cold---ju-u-u-ust right, so they're not needing the heater or air conditioner). I don't get where these drivers' heads are at?

At 10:05 in the video David said its OK to put 87 octane gas in the LC because the manufacturer puts sensors in too compensate and adjust for the lower grade gas. If I do purchase a LC I’m not sure I would want to take that risk of using a lower grade gas.

Someone else mentioned *coasting toward red traffic lights.* I believe this must have saved me quite a bit of gas over the years. (Especially in my non-hybrid, no start/stop feature cars I've had until now.) Yet, I remain conflicted. I don't like holding others up and when I see a red light coming up and prefer to coast to it, I never know what to do. Especially if the red light is rather far off, I think the driver behind me will assume I'm incompetent or being annoying (or both). Yet, *even if the red light is on a highway and quite far away I still think it's better to begin coasting* even if it _'seems'_ too early, because by the time the light has turned green and the ten+ stopped cars have started moving, I've already caught up, and therefore haven't _actually_ wasted anyone's time who stayed behind me. In fact, I would have *saved them both a tiny bit of gas and a tiny bit of brake and engine wear.* (And would literally not have wasted *_any_* of their time!) Hah! Just had an idea. Most good drivers know lots of communicating your intentions to other drivers is one good habit (and can prevent at least _some_ irritation on the part of others). Just like everyone knows seeing someone's brake lights means they're slowing or stopping, maybe we need a changeable, digital 'sign' on the back. In this case I'd make one of my options say: *_"Coasting---Red Light Ahead"._* 😀

I live in Central Texas, unfortunately I would literally DIE not running the a/c system… besides I don’t buy Toyota TRD Pro Tacoma or 4Runner Off Road Premium for fuel economy! I care less about fuel efficiency than I do about reliability, and on and off road ability! Why does the manufacturer’s ram all this fuel efficiency/ economy down every one’s throats? Thanks for the tips. The start/stop, I'm glad my 2024 Cx-5 doesn't have it or the cylinder deactivation. Maybe I'm old school but I just don't like it. The only time I want my engine shut down in the middle of traffic is if I have to shut it down. If it does actually save a little gas, I'm ok with passing that by. Good video, thanks.👍
