Excellent podcast. Some really great information here, viewed from both sides of the coin.

Let me help Professor Koopman out a bit here. First of all, if you're going to use statistics, use them all. The "retail drivers" that he feels are so ill-equipped to supervise Tesla's FSD, have now surpassed 1 Billion miles doing so. Now I don't recall hearing how many deaths or injuries have happened within that billion miles, but I'm pretty sure if it has been more than a few, Professor Koopman would have known and presented those statistics. Secondly, why autonomy? 1) NOTHING safety regulators have done up to this point, has significantly reduced the approximately 1.3 million global road deaths per year. Every year. Year after year. On top of that, it is not unreasonable to think that there is some multiple of that number in injuries. The strain on health care systems is substantial. The human and financial costs of those injuries, the shear length of the human recovery process, are staggeringly difficult, mentally challenging, and enormously expensive. Even if covered by insurance, someone pays those bills. This alone, is reason enough to take a few measured chances. But also, 2) the average personal vehicle is used less than 5% of the time. The rest of the time they sit parked. At work, that would mostly be a in parking lot, or on a street. Autonomy opens the door for a much higher utilization rate. If multiple ICE driving people were to use the same autonomous EV to get them to and from work each day, there'll be a far lower cost to each person, and a leveraged reduction in pollution, noise, traffic congestion, & parking woes. All of these things improve human health & wellness to such a degree that vehicles such enabled will be in high demand, and command a price premium for its maker.

Interesting video, I believe professor Koopman might be the individual I’ve been cursing when driving on Autopilot since NHTSA ruined it. Question: if you know the driver will use their cell phone and txt while driving, is it safer to have the FSD system active or not? Think about it and look around you while you drive. It’s not because the law makes these acts illegal that they aren’t done everyday by millions of drivers. Same thing for the “rolling stops” I dare you to stand near a street corner and count the number of vehicles that come to a complete stop. Let’s start with a simple test of your honesty, do you come to a complete stop at every sign? Even when nobody is around? Now that my Tesla with FSD does, I nearly get rear ended every time. Great job NHTSA

Yes I always stop! And I still drive more safely then the present FSD offered by Tesla! And I am free unlike what Tesla charges!

@@gmv0553a rear-ender is arguably safer for society than letting that driver blow through a stop sign if you weren't in his way. 😂😂 We are making the roads safer! 🚗

@@gmv0553 I call BS or you're an extra-terrestrial. Try using FSD you'll see what a complete stop to 0 actually means.

I would disagree somewhat on the intro statement "safety will determine if ultimately allowed on the road". While key, yes, there is too much money, politics, lawyers, "fake truth" these days, marketing spin, etc., that will also be part of the mix. There are plenty of examples where the "best/safer" things where not ultimately chosen/successful. Thanks for these talks!

Autonomous vehicles are not exclusively EVs. ICE vehicles are being used for autonomous driving too. My answers to the discussions below keep getting erased. Ugh…

@@antoinepageau8336 For ICE vehicles to be autonomous? 100% electrification won’t happen until 2035 if it happens at all. Why not provide autonomous driving to everyone until then? Safety-, convenience-wise, and financially it just makes sense.

@@jovymac7986 I'm not against the idea, although the BEV platform lends itself better to autonomy.

@@jovymac7986 No, 100% electrification won't happen for a long time but but we'll get to 90% + by 2030. Autonomous control of a car is far easier and cheaper with an EV and consumers will chose low price over type of fuel.

@@jovymac7986 By the time you'd added the hardware to the ICE car needed for autonamy you'd be up to the price of an EV

He said we need safety drivers then said humans are terrible at paying attention 😂😂😂 and said humans aren’t qualified lol
