@@Brandonmac-kg6xo yeah, it is faster than the manual 0-60 for 90% of drivers out there since magazine results are best times of multiple runs with a 5 mph rollout; humans tend to not be as fast as something THAT DOESN'T FUCKING SHIFT AT ALL. So outside of perfect shifts, the 1-2 shift will put most people behind the CVT, which is only 0.1 seconds slower to 60. Good thing you knew that and corrected them. as of right now the cvt 0-60 is about .3-.4 seconds slower and the 1/4 mile is half a second slower on paper at 14.5 seconds stock compared to 14 flat with a standard. I work at a dealer that has a subaru franchise, mind i'm certified for our ford fanchise though. I plan to pick up a 2018 with this setup simply because i have standard classic cars and enjoy an easy ride with my daily which is what i plan to make this one.
@29erfreak427 жыл бұрын
NasferatuTheImmortal The difference in the 0-60 and the 1/4 mile is the launch. The manual is quicker off the line. WIth the manual, you can get the RPMs high and build up the turbo boost. WIth the CVT, you can use launch mode, but it's still slower initially. But after the initial slower launch, the CVT is quicker than the manual. Check the speed at 1/4 mile. The CVT, while having a slightly slower time, is going faster at the end of the 1/4 mile. So, in real world driving situations (like passing) where the car is already moving, the CVT is slightly faster.

Try driving 30 miles every day over a mountain with frequent traffic jams. 10 miles uphill in stop and go traffic requires hundreds of shifts. After a few years of that, it's tiring and annoying. I've been doing that drive for over 5 years in manual transmission cars. I've had enough. The WRX CVT is a great compromise. I still get the great handling car, manual shifting if I want using paddles, and many different auto driving modes. I can also get safety features not offered with the MT.

sandy wallace - I bought the CVT WRX. It's a great car and it's fun to drive, but for pure excitement, driving the manual WRX is more fun. It's not just hype. Driving a sports car, shifting at just the right places, clutching just right while matching RPMs, is difficult to get perfect, but fun to try. As someone else mentioned, most manual drives think that they are highly skilled at shifting, but few really are. You buy a MT because of the simplicity, reliability, and pure fun. You buy the CVT if you need an auto transmission.

It is absolutely moronic the car goes into stepped gearing above 30/40% throttle for its respective setting. Put that fucker at peak power and let it sit until I back off like it is supposed to do or people should just buy a manual (since a normal auto isn't available) if they want to shift/feel shifts imo. 'we designed this amazing transmission' 'yeah, but people complain, RUIN it, instead of informing them of the advantages and why its awesome. Imagine airplane engines being stepped because people are used to that for acceleration LOL I had a CVT Honda for a while, 50 mpg to go with my 17 mpg 6 speed RX8, friends/family said it sounded like riding in a jet :p

How do paddle shifters work on a CVT transmission? Are there preset gear ratios that will be engaged on a "shift"? I don't have much experience driving a CVT car, I would think the car would automatically control the gear ratios with the pulleys to get optimal performance,
@briansullins477810 жыл бұрын
Yes, the CVT has preset ratios that the paddles "shift" to. I and S modes have six preset ratios, and S# has eight. The CVT is programmed to mimic a quick shifting automatic under certain conditions, and it's very good at it. (I own one, so I'm not just talking out my arse here.)
@amaroudis10 жыл бұрын
Brian Sullins my fiance just got a Forester a few months ago with the CVT. First time I had been in a CVT car. I expected not much "engine revving" and fairly constant rpms. But it feels/sounds like an automatic. Except in the "low" gears, it can rev for a long amount of time when you are giving it gas.
@briansullins477810 жыл бұрын
amaroudis The CVT in the Forester and the one in the WRX are the same mechanically, but the computer tuning is different. The one in the WRX has three modes that will emulate an automatic transmission. If you use the automatic mode in either "I" or "S" mode under light throttle, the transmission acts as a standard CVT and allows the engine to rev to and hold an RPM as the car continues to accelerate. However, if you are a bit harder on the gas, hard enough to get the engine to rev past 3,000 RPM or so, then both modes start acting like a six speed automatic with six preset ratios on the CVT. In "S#" mode, the CVT emulates an eight speed auto without any of the "rev and hold" of a normal CVT. Add in the paddle shifters and manual mode and it becomes a really interesting transmission.
@amaroudis10 жыл бұрын
Brian Sullins CVT sounds like a very "versatile" transmission. I think the stick shift cars will be obsolete in a few years...even on the sports cars. I actually learned to drive on a Honda CRX stick shift. Then my first car was actually and automatic, and then an automatic ever since. I love driving stick though.

Is there a way to disable the pretend shift and keep it at peak power?
@29erfreak427 жыл бұрын
You can only do that in Launch Mode. Subaru programmed the CVT to act like a regular auto transmission unless you are in I mode (acts like a CVT up to 40% throttle) and S mode (acts like a CVT up to 30% throttle). Btw, it's not a "pretend" shift. It really does shift, but the shift points chosen will vary depending on the mode, the speed, and the accelerator position. The difference is that the CVT changes ratios by varying pulley diameters instead of using fixed gears.

The CVT WRX is a great car but for enthusiasts looking to modify the car like the majority of the WRX/STi drivers, the CVT is not for you. I personally have a 15 CVT and I've been trying to do modifications to it responsibly. So far I've done the intake, BOV, axleback exhaust and running on Cobb AP stage 1+ map. Was looking forward to going stage 2 with a down/J pipe but the guys at Cobb said they are not releasing any stage 2 tunes/maps for the CVT because the transmission is limited to at around 310lbs of torgue... the CVT gave out on their test car at around that point so they highly recommended staying at just stage 1+ and nothing pass it. I am still pretty bummed about it so I'm starting to think about trading it in this summer for the 6 spd..

@mkvmyfast8 жыл бұрын
I think what makes people most upset is not that Subaru offers the WRX in an automatic option. Now this isn't the first time they have offered a WRX in a automatic option but I believe it's the fact that it's a CVT! Subaru should have made this car with a dual clutch automatic like other sport cars out there. The CVT is obviously less expensive then then Dual Clutch but if you ask me I'd rather spend the extra money on a dual clutch is having a manual was not an option for reasons like stop and go traffic like many of you have stated. Just seems like Subaru went really cheap with the transmission choice and I hope they replace this CVT with a Dual Clutch Automatic in the near future.

It's not just the weight. When testing for 0-60 or the 1/4 mile, the MT has the advantage in first gear. You can run the RPMs up and drop the clutch. With the CVT, you can use launch control, but the RPMs and boost are lower. The main difference is in first gear. So unless you are racing people, the performance while driving is almost the same.

Ok, so if its so good why is it slower to 100(62mph) then the manual ? When if you look at everything with a DCT its much quicker then the manual variants why is this not the case the the WRX CVT ? Even a standard auto (3 series) is quicker then the manual variant. Thats the only thing that really puts me off the CVT.
@29erfreak427 жыл бұрын
The CVT is only marginally slower than the MT, about 0.3 seconds 0-60. The difference is due to a few things. The CVT weighs 200 pounds, and you can't run up the rpms and drop the clutch, so you lose that time in the beginning, mostly.

Don't use image stabilization in KZbin. Looks like you're filming through a fish tank.

Oh gawd, who would want a CVT in this car. I'm sorry, but the MT is the way to go. I don't care how fast an AT is. A good MT is a joy to operate.

People with families, people who wanna travel. Can you imagine how hard it is to find someone who can drive stick AND you can tolerate for long periods of time in a car?

As much of a car guy I am, the ability for a CVT to keep the car in it's efficient low RPM band means you're saving a lot of gas. So you get WRX proformance without the issues of the consumtion of gass at higher revs unless you want that.

He said its no longer made of those poor plastics like the previous models. The future subarus will all use premium feel interior. However they need a design team for interior and need to be more artistic to compete

There will always be a market for Manual sports cars. There is also a large market for Auto sports cars. Why exclude one market? In recent years performance, fuel economy and cost are about even. If you want a Manual you can get one. I support both.
@29erfreak427 жыл бұрын
Wow. So I guess you'd turn down a high-end Porsche, or BMW M5 because they only come with automatic transmissions. In fact, most high-end super cars only come with auto transmissions. You also probably can't watch F1 races because those cars are all autos. If you like the MT, then fine. Enjoy it. No reason for you to tell everyone else that your preference is the only way it should be.

Blah. Subaru you commited a sin with an auto twice now! Please stick with manual only! And to those who cant drive a manual.......learn.

Bitch boy. Is not about learning or not knowing. I have a class a license. Eventually it gets old and annoying in heavy traffic.

NEPTUNE117 I like how you go straight to bitch boy like I personally attacked you. Im guessing you are under 30 by using a term like bitch boy. I also have a CDL A for 20 years now. Manual never gets annoying to me, wrx should only be manual. If you want to be lazy and a sissy buy a standard impreza.
@shiningyrlife9 жыл бұрын
+bloozer666 they offer 2 options? What else do you want?
@vansmudder58189 жыл бұрын
+bloozer666 It's not always about one's ability to drive manual but rather one's physical state too. I currently own a 6 speed manual Jeep Wrangler and like many prefer shifting my own gears, but I've had spinal issues that led to a failed surgery and now I'm left with permanent nerve damage that's led to extreme pain and weakness in my hip and all down my left leg to my foot which now makes driving a manual very very difficult. Now I'm probably going to trade my Jeep in for a cvt WRX because I want the performance of the WRX and the awd capibilties for handling and inclement weather along with still having fun. So for some it's not about not knowing or wanting to learn how to drive a stick but rather health and age issues can arise that make it not possible is all and I really don't want a low horse powered Impreza, so thank goodness the WRX is offered in an auto for those of us that simply have no other choice.

Almost every car I've owned has been a manual, and I prefer them, but... I have to say, I personally really like the CVT.. I guess that makes me less of a gear head :)
