In this episode we trace the old A414 through Hertfordshire and it appears we're in the most uneventful place imaginable. Cole Green... the hamlet that has nothing going for it. Or does it? Nah, it doesn't. But let's look at some tarmac...
Welcome to Britain's Abandoned Roads. In this series, I go out to explore some of the UKs abandoned or disused roads. Old roads in the woods, motorway junctions or forgotten slip roads, this series has it all! Join me as I travel all over the country seeking out forgotten and abandoned infrastructure.

Oddly satisfying series! Can I suggest a couple abandoned roads in W/Yorks. A link from Baghill lane to the 'old A1' before it came the A1M Near Pontefract is now a footpath and the old bridge over the River Aire next to Ferrybridge A power station, since you love a bridge :). Could probably think of a few more if you're filming in the area

Very fascinating I love this sort of thing. I see you have done the A3 Devil's Punch Bowl! Would be good if you did Winchester bypass A33 at St Catherine's Hill which was replaced to extend the M3.

Love this series and hope it makes a return one day. I have an interesting one you might like to do...if you can film it that is! In Stoke Gifford, Bristol, there is a roundabout on Longdown Avenue southwest of UWE that was clearly originally intended to connect to an adjacent roundabout southeast of MOD Abbey Wood. This never happened as presumably the local council didn't care to connect their roundabout to a road they don't own, leaving a cyclepath and a very conspicuous roundabout exit to nowhere. I suspect too much careless filming around that area may invite questions, but it could be a fun challenge for you!

There are some interesting abandoned parts of the A19 in the North East around Norton, Billingham and Stockton as well as around Castle Eden, Old Shotton, Peterlee and Easington Village. On the stretch between Billingham and Wolviston are three parallel dual carriageways, that have all been part of the A19, the original route through Wolviston until 1969, the first bypass (to the east) from 1969 until 1982 (the roundabout was originally a grade seperated junction until 1982) and the second bypass (to the west) since 1982. The old A19 north of the old Castle Eden Brewery is a notorious dogging hotspot, even after they installed a barrier to stop cars from accessing it.

As Matthew Rhodes wrote, a lot of abandoned roads are to be found in the Ferrybridge/Micklefield area all of which were abandoned in conjunction with the upgrade of the A1 to the A1(M). The A1246 is one carriageway of the former A1 dual carriageway. There is also the abandoned slip road on the East side of the Best Western Hotel at Milford where the A63 joined the A1 with grade separation.

I find the A414 a very strange road including in Essex especially when going from Maldon to Harlow and going via the A12 or passing through Chelmsford.
@Blackinthailand
@Blackinthailand 2 жыл бұрын
The A414. It was meant to go all the way out to the now new junction 7A of the M11. It was blocked years ago. It stops at Eastwick and you have to go through Harlow down to junc 7 of the M11.
@AutoShenanigans
@AutoShenanigans 2 жыл бұрын
I beleive "back in the day" the M11 would have gone to the West of Harlow rather than the East side, meaning the industrial estates would get motorway access far easier and indeed, traffic wouldn't need to go through Harlow itself.

Could I suggest Cutbush Lane in Reading? it used to be the main drag from Shinfield to Erleigh, it even has a bridge over the M4, but the construction of the Lower Earley housing development, cut it off. Some it's been turned into a bike path and some of it's in a 'semi used' state.

Levi is talking about the Old Chatham Road that goes up Blue Bell Hill and beyond. You can get a ghost story out of it too if that's your thing, as a woman who was due to be married the next day was killed in a car crash in the 60's and is said to be spotted from time to time.

Suggestion, even if just for 5 mins on Google Maps: the old alignment of what is now the A4046 in south Ebbw Vale. The abandoned section is now a footpath (look for Park Road, going past the Victoria Scout Campsite) but on the ground there's still evidence of how big the road once was. The original route went through the Scout site, connected with (still in use) Hall Street before turning back north and then east across to Ebbw Vale Parkway station - the footings of the original road bridge can be seen at the station. The modern road alignment crosses the location of the old steelworks blast furnaces. (The area is full of side quests - look for the dragon from the Garden Festival, for example.)

Suggestion. Brampton hut on the A1 near Huntingdon. The northbound approach to the old single level roundabout is still there, complete with yellow bumpy FFS SLOWDOWN NOW!!!! paint. It can be found hidden between the current northbound A1 exit sliproad and Burger King. Sadly, the Greggs has closed.

@@AutoShenanigans I've just been looking into it, and it appears its largely been obliterated buy the work on the recent A14 upgrade. there is still a bit of the old approach to be seen in between the current northbound exit, and the services, but only 50 meters or so. so probably not enough for a video.

Perhaps you'll see this comment..... About a mile south of Esher next to the A307 is a short 100m stretch of abandoned road. It looks to be the old road alignment for the A307 crossing over the A3. I originally thought it was merely a car park, but upon noticing the cats eye's along the centre , I came to the above conclusion.

Youghta see all the old M1 cats and ancillary plant, still in the farmlands and fields surrounding South Wingfield House/Castle. Best viewed from the Tower within and above same (except: twas an English Heritage restored building but accessible no more since the owner farmers missus barred entry to everyone:).
