This is the shortest motorway in the UK. Ignoring Ireland (for now)
It's really short.. so short you'd wonder why it ever existed... luckily I have the answers. It's mostly down to formalities but it's an interesting story I promise. Other interesting things include balanding ponds, a bridge and even a stretch of abandoned road. Who knew the shortest motorway was hiding all of these secrets.
Me.
In this series I aim to explore what our motorway network is hiding. As we drive along at 70mph..ish...we simply just wouldn't be aware of what we're missing. This series will uncover some of the hidden secrets our motorways have to offer.

The balancing pond will also treat small amounts of pollution to a limited extent. The microbes in the pond will break down some of the hydrocarbons from minor discharges before they flow into the local stream. If it is too much and the alarm is triggered then it is better that the pond dies than the stream.

The roundabout also partially replaced one of my least favourite junctions in Scotland - the 6 way traffic lights outside Morrisons where the A8/A89 used to cross paths along with two other local side roads. The junction is still there, but the A8/A89 crossroads has been moved now and the A89 is subsumed until the large new roundabout on the far side of the Bailleston Interchange. Which has improved the flow substantially.

@@AutoShenanigans Taken from an email to me on January 22nd 2010 "Dear Mr Airey In response to your concerns regarding the proposed improvements at M1 Junction 19 we comment as follows. A ‘ Statutory Instrument ‘ will be put in place to prevent non motorway traffic from using the A14 westbound beyond junction 1. This will form part of the draft Order publication procedure which is scheduled to commence shortly. There will be an opportunity for the public to comment and if they feel fit, object to the proposal." If that doesn't make the west end of the A14 into the A14(M) what does? I also just checked on Google Maps and the non-motorway traffic sign is there. Scorecard decking resold is the what 3 words location. I used to use the old Catthorpe Interchange regularly it was a nightmare. The A14 is a mess, that's what it is. The misguided busway was supposed to reduce traffic on it, it hasn't. The closure of the "Varsity Line" at the end of the 1960s (not a Beeching closure incidentally) severely reduced rail freight across the country. Dismounts soapbox...

@@AutoShenanigans nope. Not even to Dundee (which these days would make some sense). The population density and traffic numbers drop off really hard beyond Perth. Other than Dundee and Aberdeen, there are no major population centres north of Perth, so the amount of traffic is very low. You can see this from how difficult anyone has found it to even justify upgrading the whole of the A9 to a dual carriageway, even though it's the only/primary link to the Highlands. Plus you get a lot of the issues listed in the video - removing the A90 as an option for non-motorway traffic leaves little to no alternatives, so you'd either need to keep at least a single carriageway A90 alongside the M90 or some other option like that. Which becomes staggeringly expensive in comparison to the number of cars using the roads.

I cycle along that bit of A89 every day going to work. There is a bit of old A89 under the grass and trees. If you look at the 2017 Google image you can see it coned off and being covered in dirt.

I believe the abandoned stretch of the new/ old A8 was built in the late1920s/1930s to provide work for the unemployed. It provided bypasses around many of the towns along its route.

You know, as someone who used to be unemployed, getting benefits and working on major infrastructure projects would have been quite a fun thing to do. Shame it's not done any more though!

I've driven on this stretch of road many times over the last few weeks and had no idea it was a motorway, keep up the good and interesting work Jon, just a word of wise though, don't leave your car unattended for any period of time in that area, the local scrap men will be off with the wheels and the cat before you know it

Reminds me of Interstate 180 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. As you know both interstates and motorways aren't supposed to have any at grade crossings, crosswalks, or traffic lights. Interstate 180 is completely different in that it's a giant surface street with all three of those. Only reason it came to be like that was because the USDOT didn't want to spend a whole bunch of money to upgrade just that section. So the DOT said "f*ck it, make the surface street an interstate" and that was that.

In the Canadian prairies it is common to have side roads coming off major highways, sometimes there are very nasty accidents. Also highway 406 in Ontario used to have crossings with side roads back in the 1990's.

In the UK, when that happens, the sign backs change from blue to green, and it goes from being an Mx or Ax(M) road to an Ax road. There are other cases where it is an A road despite being built to motorway standards because they didn't want to put an all purpose road parallel to it. I learned my motorway driving on one of those roads near me because learner drivers aren't allowed on actual motorways.

m8 another good watch and interesting bit of old to new infrastructure info... theres a road linking the westlotian county and falkirk ... its the avon gorge ... main route between 2 major motorways used by hgv and really should be upgraded... only 40 years ago plans were made to put a new bridge and road in but has never came to anything as falkirk council shat out the plans and also couldn't shove there fingers up there area 😅😅 accident black spot and a shady junction at the top would be interesting if a man of ur knowledge could poke the councils for info on why its never been sorted ....... ps awesome road for a car but scary if u meet a truck 😂

Didn't the original, original A8 pass through the town centres of both Coatbridge and Airdrie (and intersect with the A73 in the middle of the latter)? That would explain the absence of the previous A8 (running parallel and immediately south of the A8 (M) ) on your earlier map, as well as the position of what appears to be the main road. Further east, the original original A8 also ran through the centres of Broxburn, Uphall and Dechmont, before it was by-passed by a road that has since been numbered A89, which also appears on your maps here.
