This is Russ, as I sat in the hospital for a couple days, I replayed everything in my head hundreds of times, things that I should have noticed as a warning, and what I could have done differently. I’ve seen lots of comments so I’ll address a few of them, not being defensive at all. In a normal car throttle sticking at 2200 RPM’s is not the end of the world, in my car that’s 900 ft/lbs of torque. I should have realized the load that was putting on the brakes. Didn’t cross my mind at the time. FYI: It had double springs on the throttle. In a normal car, I could have pulled emergency brake, I even got a quote at Good Guy’s Del Mar for an electronic e-brake & bigger brakes. Hindsight’s 20-20, I was just gonna trailer it to a few shows & not drive it much till I could do that. Why didn’t I downshift? Car had a B&M ratchet shifter, once I shifted up thru the gears you can’t downshift till you put it in park. So much going on in those last few seconds, forgot to downshift it after putting it in park, but it was probably too late to have had a big reduction in speed. As far as I know, driver of van was not seriously injured. Beauty of a modern car with crumple zones, self tightening seat belts & air bags. Car had liability coverage but no collision, I was still in the process of getting stated value insurance A

A few minutes after we went on our journey, me and my parents stopped to grab a few snacks for the road and after getting back inside the car, I said to my parents “fasten your seatbelts”. Car was a 1999 opel astra. Dad was driving without a fastened seatbelt as well as my mum also without fastened seatbelt in the passenger side. I was in the middle back seat, with a fastened seatbelt which unfortunately wasn’t a modern one for the middle passenger, as it was actually a lap belt only. The oncoming driver was overtaking a lorry in the corner itself, literally no visibility whatsoever and of course over a solid line. My das was doing around 70-80 km/h. Last thing I saw was both of the head on vehicles in front of my eyes and after that just that disgusting smell of a car crash (if you experienced one you know what I’m talking about) and me barely climbing out of the car with a broken pelvis. It’s a disgusting sight to see. When you realise the danger, you cannot think of much, human instinct takes over.

@@Charcoalgreyhoe00 If it's a show car that has underperforming brakes it should have never been on the road unless turned off. This build is the perfect example of doing everything wrong: Taking a high performance vehicle with a known sticky throttle onto a public in-use road, having severely underperforming brakes, having a roll cage but only having lap belts instead of a 5+ point harness, No helmet on either driver or passenger, and clearly no experience of what to do in the event of an accident in a high performance vehicle (going limp while putting your arms into an X pattern on your chest). A sanity check is certainly required. There are extremely expensive sports cars out there, which are engineered to harness large amounts of power and very few of them have a power output approaching 1300 HP. Half of that power would be too much for a car without ABS, traction control and 4WD. This vehicle doesn't even have airbags or a modern crumple zone, it is a stupid car.

Yeah your armored truck is likely worse than a modern commuter car like a mini van. Its built to be solid, and... well, armored. They have big steel bumpers etc. That's great for protecting the vehicle, and the money inside maybe, but there are no crumple zones for energy to be absorbed and dissipated into the vehicle itself rather than your body inside. You have your weight and size, but even a small vehicle traveling 50mph is carrying a butt-load of energy and it has go somewhere.

Well, in a crash, the other car is the first metal ball, and you're the one at the other end that all the force gets transferred to. With a modern car designed to crumple, it would be like replacing the middle balls with a soft spring.

Drunk driver hits me… My seat completely breaks backward….. I’m layed out flat and van screeches to a stop at the other side of the intersection. (Back tires locked up from being compressed in the crumpled up steel) Witnesses say they saw no brake lights from his truck (Nissan pickup) and estimate speed at 45. Driver and passenger of pickup go to hospital, driver for shoulder, I think, and passenger for pealed back scalp/head injury. He made a hole in windshield with his head I could put my fist through. Driver ends up in prison as multiple offender and this time with an injury accident. I go home and fly to Vegas for training the next day. I only had a sore left forearm. I think I must’ve hit it on the steering wheel as I was thrown back…. And my stomach ached like I had done a bunch of sit-ups. Side note: I couldn’t find my phone to call 911. I had it in a pocket at the side of my leg (painter pants…. kinda in at the time, 😂) I found it all the way in the back of the van. It’s crazy how hard the impact is in an accident….
