My 2005 M3 is at 166,000 miles and did 155mph (GPS verified, 160mph on the speedometer) in 5th gear at 7600rpm the other day. (Not limited) totally stock as well. (Did the rod bearings 6k miles ago) I was surprised I still had 500rpm to go, and didnt need to even touch 6th gear. Only slowed down due to hitting traffic ahead. Love these cold fall mornings.

@@jareknowak8712 - you're right, I should've specified in comparison to the G80 M3 of today. I think the E46 is just over 3000lbs & the G80 is nearly 2 tons. (it's why I drive an M2 Comp & am currently shopping for a Cayman 718 or that new Lotus Emira. Which do you prefer on looks alone? I wanna keep my budget under 6 figures. If I had the money I'd love one of those Maserati MC20's.

Honestly its a bit slow for a medium size 2wd sedan/coupe, dont know if its the aerodynamics or misplaced gearing for top speed or a combination that is the problem. I was hoping for 290 speedo or so, at least 275 real speed. Ah well, 265 real speed is good enough for most people. Maybe it could have done 275 with better gearing, doesnt look entirely impossible.

@@GoldenCroc I also find it a bit slow. I had a friend who had filmed his M3 e46 at 290km / h and his M3 e36 3.0 at 280km / h. He himself has a friend who had an M3 e36 3.2 with different camshafts. 304km / h with GPS.

It probably has only 290-300hp max after all these years. It’s a little slow actually. I had one back in 2006, and stock engine would take you to 300kph no problem

Literally, I can not get enough of e46! I had 320d but this car is my dream no matter how old it is. The e46 is far from being perfect which may be why this makes it more like a human and you can make connections with it. The look of the car is for me how a car should look or BMW I should say.

I have 1 m3 e46 mine is 2006 mystic blue with cinnamon interior and Dinan package, smg (no manual) it has around 450 hp because was upgraded it's too fast machine, is in Orlando, Florida USA.

What? There is no rule you have to space gears like this, it depends entirely on what cogs you got in the box. And you gain a heck of a lot of usability at higher speed with more gears, for a relatively minimal weight gain on a street car.

I've tried one myself and as I've seen in the video the 6th gear is pretty much useless in terms of getting the top speed, as in 5th I ended up at 282 while in 6th just above 290, so it's just useful to lower full consumption
