A friend of mine has a 2014 M4 with a Lichfield stage 1 tune - approx. 520hp, and we did a little pull against one of these on a French motorway. Admittedly we have 4 people in the M4, but we weren't really gaining on this until north of 130/140mph. Quick car.

I have a 545e and it's the best car I've ever driven. Lots of poke when you need it and fuel economy around town as well. Max you forgot to put the transmission into S gear change on the autobahn. This would of given you much slicker gear changes getting you to 250kmh quicker. I won't be tuning mine because of my 545e still being in warranty.

The problem with hybrids is that they make you have even less connection with the powertrain, the gas pedal is even less directly linked to what the car does. (And I've owned many PHEVs from BMW and Mercedes already, so I'm talking out of experience)

Yup, same experience. I've had both a Mercedes C300de and now a BMW 330e and they both have that issue. There was also a noticeably (much) larger delay between stepping on the gas and the vehicle actually accelerating compared to their pure ICE counterparts (C300d and 330i) even when in sports mode. I suspect it's an inherent property of a PHEV. The hybrids both had amazing gas mileage though, with the C300de being the absolute king seeing as it is a diesel PHEV

@@BinaryBlueBull odd, I dont find that, I had the 540i and now the 545e and i find this a lot more responsive, no lag when in Sport as it's all on the 6, with hybrid kicking in to boost and remove the lag between shifts and turbo spin up etc. For casual driving its nothing special, but then what you need while in traffic?

@@Runawaygeekchannel I would venture to guess that this is down to the higher trim level and so the higher engine level in the cars you mention. The 540i and 545e are at the top of the segment, apart from of course the full blown M-models. A better comparison to the 330e would be the 530e. It could also be down to the powertrain, as the 330e has the B48 engine while the 540i and 545e are both the B58 engine, which has two more cilinders and a lot more power. The B58 is a very famous and sporty engine as you probably know, one of the best that BMW has ever made. It would be very weird if that engine had so much lag as the B48 in the 330e, because the B48 doesn't even have as much lag in the 330i. I think the difference is because of one or more of the previous reasons I'll give an example: in comfort mode at about 90km/h, if I stomp the gas pedal all the way to kickdown, there is between 1 to 1.5 (and very occasionally 2) seconds of delay before it takes off, depending on whether the combustion engine was on or off at the moment. That is too much in my opinion. In sport mode (sport individual, everything turned up and with xtraboost) it's about 1 second delay (and very occasionally a little more than 1) which is better, but 1 second is still too much for sport mode since the combustion engine is always on in this mode and the electric motor is supposed to have instant torque

I will get my car back from Mosselman Turbo from the Netherlands on Monday. ECU has been sent to Finland and my BMW 545e is being tuned to 500hp. Limiter is also being removed and I'm very curious to see where it goes. I also had a downpipe and a custom exhaust made by jmtuning. Quite curious.

How this works nowadays is that you need to physically remove the entire ECU from your car > ship it to BMW > and they provide you car-specific tool (software key) for the modifications

That´s why for the older models you can just drive your car to any tuner and they can add those extra 60-120hp for few hundred euros (or dollars, etc.) and the entiry operation takes few minutes + to proof for customer > the Dyno test with printouts

Expensive tune. As far as I know BMW can detect tuning, including tuning boxes? So bye-bye warranty and maybe even problems at resale? That's a hell of a lot of torque to torture the components with, especially down the line when the car is older. Apparently some tuners do say they are able to make their remaps undetectable by BMW...but of course the situation changes all the time so I don't know how it is right now.

@@kane5429 Yes, so what is difficult for you to understand? 540i has 450Nm. 545e has 450Nm plus the torque from the electric motor = 600Nm. And the electric motor gives its torque way down low at low rpm. The lower the rpm, the more difficult it is for a gearbox to handle torque.

there is never an "empty battery", there is always a reserve. I own the car for 8 months already, and when you want to do some crazy things on the highway, there is no difference between empty. half or full battery. and when you want to charge the batteries while driving, you get first 10-30% very fast, moreover when you are driving faster/sport mode or battery control.

Maybe not while you drive to the shops but there are various nurburgring videos of bmw/peugeot/merc hybrids not lasting a full lap and needing time to recharge before giving full boost again. The clue is in the name plug-in hybrid...

@@drumdone as said, the system is calibrated to preserve always a reserve for a 10s shot of Xtraboost.. if you have 0% of charge and you've already used the Xtraboost, you need to wait some seconds to refill the charge. I cannot say precisely how many seconds to wait, but I can assure to you they are very few..

I have the car for almost one year, I can say it is awesome, but I do not understand why the downgrade of engine tuning, to under 300HP. from 140-150 - 540i is faster than 545e. Electric motor offers a boost only, not continues power. If I will still have the car after the warranty will expire, I will take it to a chip tuner.. the petrol engine is too nice.

As nice as this is, it seems compromised for me as a performance saloon. 100-200 is slower than an m550i, tuned 540i, tuned m340i, heavier than all of these with less boot space. If you're using the performance you won't benefit from the mpg advantage of hybrid..

@@user-bi5vb2dl5k You do realize that the B58 is in the Toyota Supra right? And that the Supra and Z4 was jointly developed by Toyota and BMW since 2012. Toyota badged cars have to pass Toyota's quality control. The development of the MK5 Supra is well documented. The B58 was fully torn apart and inspected bolt to bolt by Toyota during the development stage. This has been said before by the Supra's chief engineer. So how you about you stop smoking whatever you're smoking because it's killing what little braincells you have left.

No, 286 hp is the power of the combustion engine. 394 hp is the total with electric drivetrain.
