Yes, the video is GREAT but WHY mount a crankshaft with rust on it? Couldn't it be cleaned first? Rust goes into the engine oil = not good.

Only a little bit of surface rust on the counterweight. Won't do anything as it's not like there's large rust scales on it that'll fling off.

Sorry if I'm being stupid with this comment, but I don't think it's good for the engine to be assembled with that rust on the inside parts (crankshaft). It look very nice outside, but, as far as I know, rust is usually harder then regular steel and iron, and it may affect the engine life in long term. All I learnt about assembling engines is that you should be careful with any possible dust contamination while assembling it. Thank you!

I agree Cleanliness is next to godliness... He’s gone through all that effort and not cleaned off the corrosion on the internal parts. That must fall off and contaminate the oil. A great job though 9/10...:)

Unser Claas Dominator 114 hat auch eine 421... Ist ja eigentlich dasselbe... Und läuft und läuft und läuft seit 1985 wie ein Uhrwerk. Auch sonst haben wir 3 MB trac's mit Mercedes Motoren, die nie Probleme haben, und auch genug Feuer unter der Haube. Mercedes Motoren springen auch bei -20 ohne Probleme an... Wo unser DX 85 schon bei 5 juckelt. Meiner Meinung nach sind die Mercedes Motoren das beste auf dem Markt. ☺️

Super anschauliches Video! Lehrmittel für die Berufsschule. Ein OM442 hatte im SK xx38/xx44/xx50 an den Zylinderköpfen bereits die Konstantdrossel oder deren Vorrüstung > anderes Zylinderkopf-Design Diese fehlt an allen 8 Zylindern und es ist keine Tombak-Ausführung. Tippe daher auf: 1. ein OM442LA/I 442.951> NG xx44 gebaut für Europa von 1986-1988, dann wäre anthrazit im Zuge einer Überholung/Werkinstandsetzung auf den Block gekommen. Bis MJ 1992 war Aggregatfarbe grün und Chassisfarbe ochsenblut. Was dann dafür spräche ist, dass Ihr Euch die Mühe gemacht habt, eben den alten MB-Farbton zu recherchieren... 2. es ist ein "Zwitter" aus Mannheim in der Übergangsproduktion mit restlichen Köpfen der SK xx35/xx48 und ohne SA-Code: Konstantdrossel. Eeefach mol uffs typeschild gucke. Greets aus Mannem. Immer diese Fachsimpler ;)

As I know ,in my country in Indonesia. This engine used in OH1634 V8 bus chassis. And still running well till now. The 1st bus chassis in Indonesia with built in Air suspension ,abs & retarder at that era, in 1996!, there's 20unit bus with OH1634 chassis in Indonesia, and all of them owned by one bus operator. Crank pulley looked like it could do with checking it was wobbling quite a bit. I bet belts wouldn't last long. Really cool video though, I would love all engine rebuild videos to be like this.

Das ist aber ein ziemlich alter Motor. Schätze aus den 80-90ern. Die hatten zum Schluß 6 Zylinder bis 450PS und danach nur noch die Reihen 6 Zylinder, die baugleich mit Detroit und Mitsubishi sind.

Die Riemenscheibe auf der Kurbelwelle ist doch total krumm! Bei dem Planlauffehler halten die Keilriemen nicht lang. Was bei der Überholung fehlt ist attention to detail (der Oberflächenrost an der Kurbelwelle wurde ja schon mehrfach genannt).

Alles erneuert und frisch lackiert und dann die 20 Jahre alten rostigen Schrauben reingedübelt. Die paar Euro für neue Schrauben hätten wohl da Budget gesprengt...

Auch die Kurbelwelle hätte ich entrostet bevor ich sie Wieder eingebaut hätte. So spült sich der Dreck in den Ölkreislauf..

es geht da um die Wiederinstandsetzung, nicht Neuaufbau... bei ner Wiederinstandsetzung werden so wenig Neuteile wie möglich hergenommen... was ich aber dann auch nicht verstehe, warum die die Kurbelwelle nicht entrostet haben und neue zylinderlaufbuchsen mit Kolben gekauft haben... die Buchsen hätten sie ohne weiteres hohnen und die Kolben reinigen können

das habe Ich mir auch gedacht wie kann mann nur so einen Pfusch machen von den Pleuel die alten Schrauben nehmen das sind ja immer Dehnschauben die sind wenn man sie abschraubt nur noch Schrott und mùssen ja immer erneuert werden und dann noch die rostige verdreckte Kurbelwelle wider so ohne sie zu reinigen einbauen Ich bin kein Mechaniker Aber so eine Scheiss Arbeit hàtte nicht einmal Ich gemacht klar einen Daumen nach unten das ist totaler Murks die wùrde Ich ja nicht einmal einen Motor reparieren lassen wenn sie es mir Gratis machen ist ja schade um das Geld was mann da fùr die neuen Teile ausgibt so eine Scheiss arbeit kann man sich ja nicht anschauen

Das sind Diese Firmen von dehnen Red Head Zylinderkopftechnik immer spricht die machen eine Motoren Erneuerung kostet wahrscheinlich wenig aber bringt auch wenig ausen die Farbe schòn neu und im Motor die alten Schrauben und rostige Kurbelwelle eingebaut so hat mann gleich beim ersten Fahren schon ein Super motoròl mit Rost beimischung das schleift dann die neuen Kolben und Zylinderbuchsen schòn ein oje

If you would remove the rust, you would remove weight from the crankshaft and it wouldn´t be balanced anymore.

It looks to be merely flash surface rusting because it was exposed to solvent or water based solution inside the parts washer. Inside the engine it will be in a bath of oil anyways.
