Answer to what makes the piston return on a combined caliper... when hydraulic pressure is applied to the brake it brings the piston forward, when its released the bend in the brake seal pulls it back off the pads (called roll back). But as the pads wear the piston goes further and further forward, but the roll back is less so only retracts off the pads. The combinedcaliper also has a set of springs and an inner piston clutch arangement that when the pressure is sufficient it rotates the piston

can we use this tool on any type of modern brake caliper?
@x2malandy8 жыл бұрын
At 2:46, what I am seeing is that the thread on the tool, (maybe a 5/8 - 20) must match the pitch, threads per inch or whatever. Then, I conclude that all calipers must be using the same pitch weather American made or foreign made. Otherwise, the tool would freeze up or get loose. Just thinking. On the car, I heard that if you loosen the bleeder a little that it aid's in retracting the piston.

@jamlove757 жыл бұрын
The tool is actually designed to handle variation in thread pitch of the piston. As you compress and turn, you also can adjust the stop plate as needed, if the pitches don't match. So, it's quite versatile!
@BillSikes.6 жыл бұрын
x2malandy Don't losen the bleeder screw, you'll introduce air into the system, just remove the reservoir cap
@danielgerardopandelo11486 жыл бұрын
You are wrong, what happens when you losen a bleeder is that the fluid gets off the system but the air doesn´t get into it. It´s an error.
@dean-gm1lg5 жыл бұрын
The tool threads are mostly a lot finer pitch you just have to keep chasing with the back plate nut

The piston does not rotate back because of the inner clutch. The advance of the piston along the spindle is what keeps the handbrake cable tight and functioning as the pads wear. The turn back tool resets the piston on the actuating spindle. The spindle is pushed either by a ball in ramp mechanism or an excentric lever system.

I've been looking for some information about attaching the emergency brake cable to a new caliper. I thought this video would show the caliper being attached and hooked up but it doesn't. Exactly my question! I think that putting on the parking brake turns the internal threaded adjuster thereby moving piston outward. Also. I bet there are reverse threads on some cars.

What's your problem? I didn't know about this type of caliper before, and I'm trying to change pads on a Fiat Panda. I could not push the piston in and thought it had seized. Now I know what's required I will have a go even without the special tool.
@juansolo16174 жыл бұрын
@@dukenukem5768 It probably won't work without the special tool. You'll strip out the notches on the piston and then the caliper is borked. To reinstall, just hook the new caliper up to the brake line, add fluid and pump the system with the bleeder open, have another guy at the bleeder to close it once it starts flowing. Then bleed as normal. A hand vacuum pump / brake bleeder tool would assist with this.
@dukenukem57684 жыл бұрын
@@juansolo1617 It did work. I put a G-clamp on the piston and turned the notches on the piston, alternating between tightening the clamp and turning bit-by-bit, nothing too forceful and didn't take long. I'm capable of turning notches without stripping them - I dont have ham fists.

@timothyjohns86306 жыл бұрын
If you left the parking brake on, that burning smell would be your rear brakes because when you apply the parking brake the caliper keeps the brake pads pushed against the rotor. So if you were to be driving with the parking brake on your pads would be stuck against the rotor, wearing them down

you do not need to open the bleeder, any fluids will travel back to the master cylinder, just make sure its clean fluids, or if not do a flush on your system. I used to crack open the bleeder too but you risk getting air in the system. if you do not open it you won't let air into the system. In order for Fluid mechanics to work properly you need a solid clom of fluids, introduce air and you make a weak point to the column because air will compress oil will not compress. Bleeders are only to get air out of a system, if the system is working properly all you need to do is remove some fluids from the master fill tank. If you're adding brake fluids it also means your pads are wearing down because the pistons in the calipers are moving on a sealed system without leaks. If you do not remove some of the fluids it will overflow onto your paint job on the car or on the garage floor when you push the caliper piston back in to install new pads. You only need to take off the rotor if its warped or deeply scared and needs to be turned on a lathe you can inspect run out with a dial indicator and see if the rotor is still inside factory specs with a caliper. I'm not a mechanic, so I do not know all the tricks, this is just stuff I've learned over the years from other people. I watch people work on other people's car and ask questions but I dIY my own brakes always have. Some of what I've said is what I've figured out or found out by doing mistakes. Learn from your mistakes, there ok to make once and awhile and you will. This whole rant might be one of my mistakes, you may have known all this. But somone that didn't and read this found out something new they didn't know. I'm also not 100% sure I am right. (Right)!

Thanks for this good video. I have a question. Is there a same clockwise direction for rotating of caliper piston for wheels on both sides of this 2005 Mazda 3 vehicle? A reason for asking is that on another video on KZbin is shown a caliper piston tool set with two devices - "left hand side" and "right hand side", with assumption that direction for rotation of caliper piston is different on different sides of a car. Here is a link to that video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3bCgYaPbZhknNEm37s
