Alstonefield is a perfect Peak District village, nestled on raised land above Dovedale to the east and across soft rolling landscape to Wetton and the Manifold Valley to the West. The cottages, farms and drystone walls are constructed mainly of limestone and in the damp shade the field and lane walls are often covered in small plump pillows of vibrant green moss. Hilltops are crowned by copses of sycamore and beech and the valley sides are thick with Ash, Hazel and Hawthorn. The last few years have seen the Ash ravaged by dieback, which has left large areas of dying and dead trees where there was previously dense and healthy woodland.
In spring the sorrowful, haunted calls of Curlews are blown on the hill breeze, Dippers bob in and out of the lively limestone streams, Redstarts flit between hawthorn bushes and Skylarks rise up and up above meadows, twittering their twinkling song as they ascend.
This video was recorded during visits, in early Autumn and the others in mid winter, in both cases the low light of late afternoon colours and shades the landscape.
