I was up in Boston last weekend. I had a 2-day conference and my schedule was packed so wasn't able to do any railfanning. took 94 up to 128 on friday right after school and right after the conference on sunday I dashed right to south station for 2275, makes all stops to providence then straight to new york which only runs sunday evening. 3 hours and 31 mins including stops which would have been closer to 3:25 had we not gotten held on the hell gate line for LIRR traffic.

I don’t get it why the Hsp46 gets soo much hate, I love all the locomotives that run on the mbta
@3985uprr2 ай бұрын
They have had many mechanical issues and I just personally don’t like the looks of them. I have a feeling I have lots of company regarding the latter statement

A lot more single level sets were running on the south side than typical because the north side stole a couple of the "super sets" for the Salem Halloween trains. That's also why there were at least 2 GP40s running around south
@3985uprrАй бұрын
Yes. The Salem trains. Very heavy with passengers

Interesting fact. The HSP-46 (the goofy grape) was designed by the same designer who designed the GE Genesis locomotives (P32/P42). It's basically a modernized P42 but with AC traction motors and a 4600hp GEVO engine, which is why they pull a lot better than the old F40s (MBTAs F40s are putting about 3000hp to the rail), it also helps that the HSPs can go straight to 8 as soon as they've pulled the slack out of the consist, no worry about redlining the motors.

The P32’s look much better
@mrvwbug44232 ай бұрын
@@3985uprr They do. The HSPs are odd looking, but have it where it counts.

Any tips on Trainspotting in Boston? I’ll be at north station soon
@3985uprr2 ай бұрын
You need a ticket to get inside just buy the cheapest round trip ticket you can. Once inside, you can hang out with no problem then take a little ride and when you come back, keep your ticket so you can exit the station

I’m sorry but an F40 with LED lights just looks wrong to me. It’s like a cursed image from the Internet, but real
@3985uprr2 ай бұрын
I looked beyond the LED lights to see the locomotive behind it. That’s what turns me on.

Is there any real reason why Amtrak rarely uses push/pull equipment? I know on the keystone they do, but I feel like it would be much more efficient on the regional as well.
@mrvwbug44232 ай бұрын
They don't have that many cab cars. They are already running dual locomotive push-pull on some Keystone and NER services due to a shortage of cab cars (I'm sure the engineers don't mind having double the power on their consist haha, given the ACS-64 is an absolute beast in terms of pulling power). Once the Airo sets come into service, all NEC services should be push-pull as the Airo sets all have cab cars. Their performance should increase substantially too as the ALC-42Es have an extra set of traction motors on the pantograph car, which will give the Airo sets around 17,200hp on the wire (basically equivalent to 2x ACS-64s) and 4200hp on diesel.
