Hi Garden Friends! Its October, but the garden doesn't care, the blooms keep coming! I have worked on adding continual color and blooms to my garden over the last couple of years, and its starting to pay off. I still have flowers blooming this late in the season. I'm so thankful for the gift of flowers in October. We have had a unseasonably warm week and I have had a chance to spend some time in the garden enjoying the remainder of the blooms. Sheffield Mums, Anemones, Asters, Monkshood, and Montauk daisies are among some of the last blooms in my garden. Any day now the first frost will come and it will all end for the season. But for now we enjoy what's left of the garden. What's still blooming in your October garden? Beautiful! Thanks for helping me give myself permission to get rid of the plants that aren't working and move on to something else. I'm also going to grow more cutting flowers and less veg in my veg garden. We have so many farms I can get tomatoes from instead of fighting with the birds and chipmunks every year.

Thank you for another great tour, your garden is so pretty in every season, Monks Hood is poisonous??? Yikes I have it in 2 spots in garden and gave some to my sister in law. I will remove it to keep my free range chickens safe .lv your tips about each plant, think I will be trying the whirlwind around my fountain as it gets alot of splash from birds , thinking thats why the echinacea plants not doing so well their.
@HookedandRooted3 сағат бұрын
Hi Jennie, Be very careful about removing it. There is probably some helpful information online about it. I'm researching this as well. The whirlwind would be a great choice for around a fountain. Coneflowers do prefer a dryer/more fast draining soil. I have coneflower in that bed as well, the hardier varieties do o.k. but I have lost some of the doubles and fancier ones due to the moisture.

My PW pink micro chip butterfly bush and all the lantana are still blooming. My gomphrena leaves turned yellow so I removed them a couple weeks ago, dried a ton of the flowers for decor ❤ however my cat loves chewing on them so had to put them up high so she can't reach them😂
@HookedandRooted3 сағат бұрын
Hi Christina! That's wonderful. Some of my gomphrena is just beginning to have yellow leaves. I'm also going to dry some of the flowers this year 🌱💚 Kitties are so curious.

I am in NE Oregon, same zone, and our local nursery won’t carry Japanese maples because “people don’t have enough shade, they are too expensive even at cost and hers died after 4 years”. I know there are some that are rated down to a zone 4, so maybe I need to hunt for that. Do you put lemon cypress in the ground? If so, what requirements do you give it?
@HookedandRooted3 сағат бұрын
Hi there, I don't have lemon cypress. However, we are in a zone 6b/7a, so thankfully maples do mostly well here. I have purchased many of my maples from Oregon and they get shipped here to Massachusetts. I always figured Oregon has the best maple growing conditions since so many are grown there, maybe in the southern region.
@marciawright26004 сағат бұрын
Hi, I love the Jazz hands plant but I am 6b. Do you think it will overwinter well since it says 7b-9? I would really like to try it. 😊
@HookedandRooted3 сағат бұрын
Hi Marcia, I'm in a zone 6b/7a. Last winter I used a winter shrub cover to offer it some protection from winter winds. It did fine, so if you have a sheltered location or south facing area perhaps in a micro climate by a foundation of a house etc, it may work just fine. Hope this helps.
@marciawright26003 сағат бұрын
@@HookedandRooted Ok great! I will get one and give it a try!! I do have a pretty protected south facing area! (Glen Arbor, Michigan) I will wait until spring to give it a good growing season! Thank you!!

I’m new to Autumn Joy Sedum plants. I recently bought a gallon pot from Home Depot. How often should I water it, it’s starting to turn yellow and the leaves are dropping. I’m watering twice a week and in zone 10B , SF Bay Area. Mid 60’s everyday with morning fog. Any advice would be appreciated. 🙏🏼Thanks
@HookedandRooted2 сағат бұрын
Hi Gracie, That sounds like what normally happens in Fall, the leaves yellowing and dropping. Perhaps take it back to once per week now. Just water deeply that one time. Then by next season, unless you have very long periods of drought, let the weather take care of things. They are very drought tolerant. Hope this helps.
