Autumn leaves (Mystic improvisation with Joscho Stephan & Biréli Lagréne)

If two geniuses meet in a genial mood, then a musical treasure can arise, that is not repeatable. This is exactly what happened on March 5, 2020 with Joscho Stephan and Biréli Lagréne. The announcement was a title everyone knows - Autumn Leaves. After 15 minutes of never-ending improvisation and constant theme variation, an unplanned and untested masterpiece has emerged, which has little to do with the actual title melody, but shows that this musical random product of the highest level can only come from the mysticism of chance. Chapeau!
The motiv of Autumn leaves was written 1945 by Joseph Kosma for the movie Les Portes de la nuit and was performed by actor Yves Montand. Since then countless jazz and pop stars like Bill Evans or Eric Clapton released their own interpretation of Autumn leaves.
Wenn sich zwei Genies in genialer Stimmung treffen, dann kann auch mal eine musikalische Kostbarkeit entstehen, die so nicht wiederholbar ist. Genau das ist am 5.3.2020 mit Joscho Stephan und Biréli Lagréne passiert. Angekündigt war ein Titel, den jeder kennt - Autumn Leaves. Nach 15 min nicht enden wollender Improvisation und ständiger Themenvariation ist ein ungeplantes und ungeprobtes Meisterstück entstanden, welches mit der eigentlichen Titelmelodie nicht mehr viel zu tun hat, aber zeigt, dass dieses musikalische Zufallsprodukt höchsten Niveaus nur der Mystik des Zufalls entstammen kann. Chapeau!
Das Grundmotiv Autumn Leaves ist der englische Titel des von Johnny Mercer aus dem Französischen übertragenen Chansons Les feuilles mortes, das 1945 von Joseph Kosma auf ein bestehendes Gedicht von Jacques Prévert komponiert wurde. Es wurde zunächst geschaffen, um von Yves Montand in Marcel Carnés Film Pforten der Nacht (Les Portes de la nuit, 1946) vorgetragen zu werden, entwickelte aber ein Eigenleben als Chanson und Jazz Standard. Unzählige Interpretationen des Werkes wurden in der Musikgeschichte veröffentlicht. Von Jazzgrößen wie Bill Evans bis Popstar Eric Clapton.

I recently bought the Yamaha classic electric model Bireli is playing: a Chinese made guitar with a cedar top and laminated mahogany back and sides with Fishman electronics. As you can hear, it's a fine instrument. I paid $500 CDN (approx. $400 USD). It was a steal of a deal!

I don't know if people are so clear about it but there is too much history of the Gipsy Jazz guitar condensed in these two guitars. So much so I say, if Stochelo Rosenberg were present, we would have the complete living legacy of Dyango. I am honestly excited to see and hear them play together. Thanks for sharing this video.
