Peter, To be able to live, breath and be in your present reality of creating and to give to others a sense of warmth, love and understanding of what it is to be our TRUE selves... You and your family are teachers of: "if you believe from within ourselves, then anything is possible". Stay and stay true to yourself! Namaste From a living historian of history.

Yes sir, you have once again shown a GREAT "Stuff that needs to get done before winter comes" episode. Anything that needs doing outside like getting the last of your DRY fire wood under shelter and any root crops in before the soil is to soggy, you have to get done before the wet cold days of late October and Early November come. I have read where pioneers lost entire potato harvests because of unrelenting rain turned the soil to mud and they rotted in the ground, and then folks contracted flus and colds from the damp trying to harvest them. Tough people for a tough life. Peter have you considered doing a "Pioneer Medicine and Home Remedy " video.

To this day I love kraut, my wife not so much. Lol! Grandfather had a big garden, it was a family event to put food up for the winter. That doesn't happen today, family events seems to be going away. Hey Peter, I have always heard it takes as much wood to heat a cabin as it would take to fill it, is there any truth to that? Having spent most of my life in construction doing hard labor, with long hours in the summer, and doing very little in the winter, using it to rest and heal, I can sympathize with our ancestors. You are truly blessed to live the life you live and I hope that some day I can live such a life.

Mr kelley) I am brand new on your channel and It warms my heart to find you! I was a "back to the lander" back in the hippie days but I was from a farm background and a" history nut "so it was a good fit for me . I should gift you the first edition of the MOTHER EARTH NEWS I still have ,it was titled "A NEW BEGINNING " I didn't have the right woman to live it 100% like you, but I am doing my best to carry on the traditions. I live in Northern Ohio ,and it is an honor to make your 'Online Aquaintance ! ,,,,,,,,,,, regards Dale from Ohio

I'm a dairy farmer in Maine. If I could snap my fingers and be back in the late 1700s early 1800s, I would in a heart beat. I know life would be harder but it would be richer as well. I'd probably sleep better at night too. I really love the 1st person interpretation. Are you going to be able to work on the fort anymore before winter sets in?

Grew up on a small dairy farm and not now loved my childhood but, feel that I learned a lot of life skills. I hope to have the 2 blockhouses built by spring.

I am working on a root cellar, do you move your sauerkraut to the root cellar for the winter? We did 15 gallons of kraut this year and 9 gallons of Curtido (El Salvadoran Cabbage Salad) which is done like kraut with cabbage, carrots, onions, garlic, peppers and oregano. W did 10 different big ferments this year. Before canning jars, Ferments, cures in conjunction was the smoke house for cold smokes was what was available but you know that. Good video. Thanks for your time.

Full disclosure, we cheat. We wait 9 weeks then bag it in meal size portions and freeze it. It doesn’t kill the probiotics , they kinda go dormant. Once we remove it for a meal, we soak it in water for the day and it reactivates the good stuff and remove excess salt.

Another great video. Love the music. I noticed you have no livestock. Is it to cold for maybe chickens or hogs or are they just too much trouble?

I feel your pain in getting ready for winter! It starts in the spring with the planting and doesn't end until the cold is here. Just like you, I have to cut and split wood, but being a little further south I only need about 2 1/2 cords for the winter. That usually leaves a little left over for some early spring fire pits and roasting marshmallows with the granddaughter. I always keep a few well-seasoned logs around in case the winter is long or exceptionally cold. I have a question, using some grow bags I was FINALLY able to grow some carrots this year! I grew them in raised bed soil since mt own soil is clay. They grew well but seem a tad small for the time they were in the ground, the soil has a 6.5 PH and they look and smell great but they have a VERY bitter back end on them. Bitter to the point of almost being inedible. Any advice on how to prevent that? I kept them watered, there were no weeds growing in there with them, although the deer did eat them to the ground twice. (Hence the small size). They seemed to be happy and pleased with their lot. Maybe I picked those to soon??

Simply a guess but, if the deer ate off the tops the stored energy in the actually root is depleted in order to grow a new top.

It's nice to see fall colors and winter preps. A good time to work outside. I know the difference between a chord and a face chord of wood, but I've never heard of a bush chord. Is that a Canadian term for a face chord?
@TheWoodlandEscape
@TheWoodlandEscape 9 ай бұрын
A bush cord up hear is what you call a cord I believe. A bush cord is 4’ x 4’ x 8’. A face cord is 16” x 4’ x 8’, exactly 1/3 of a bush cord.

Howdy Peter I think many people do not know what is takes to prepare for winter .... until they try it . I think most people put a cover on the boat and turn the thermostat up ....lol WOW you say 9 cords of wood , you used a word " bushel " ? is that a metric measurement ? if so how far away is it from 128 cubic feet ? I liked that song at the end she is great !
@mrmicro22
@mrmicro22 9 ай бұрын
A bushel is a two arm load basket, almost what is called a laundry basket in the US. I think he is saying a bush cord, which is not a phrase I know. In the US, we use a cord (roughly 1 m x 1 m x 3m)and a smal!er face cord (.3 x1 x 3 m) measure. Some Canadian will need to chime in.
@TheWoodlandEscape

Bush cord is a common term in Canada for your same cord in the States … 4’ x 4’ x 8’ and a face cord is 1/3 of a bush cord at 16” x 4’ x 8’.

I had thought tree were chopped down in winter when the leaves and weeds were at a min. And because the wood needed to dry for 6-9 mo. before they could actually use it. So, would the wood be "in" before fall even started. Not to mention, didn't they burn wood all year long? Not just in the winter. Just my 2 cents.

@@EXARCWithGrandpophas someone who has burnt wood all of my life it is a continual process never seem to have enough. Show a video a while back that explained by the time you cut a tree down did the time it actually gets into the fire you handle the wood about seven times. As he said for a small home during those times during those times you're looking at about nine chords of wood the winner that's a lot!

We work our fire wood on a 2 year drying cycle. First cut and split in the spring than piled in a dome shape outside in full sun and wind. Old timers called this sun scalding. It gets piled in the drying side of the shed for a full year while we burn the wood put in the spring before.

The earliest known use of the word homestead is old English around 1100. There was the Homestead act of 1882 as well that more or less made the word common in households.
