What a beautiful addition to your homestead, I love the stone walls and terracing that has been done and the additional water security will be invaluable in the future. Well done on the clearing Martin, that was epic! I can't wait to see it all expose itself as you complete the clearing/cleaning and put it into full production. I would love to see a map of the overall land and how the new addition fits into it as you go forward in your property development. Well, I must say this has been my favourite Portugal 🇵🇹 content from anyone for a while. The best time-lapse I've seen, superb! I love strimming, it's my meditation. Finding hidden stone work, especially when it's beautiful and I'm betting there is more to see of the water management systems there, possibly a water mine hidden away. Nice to see land being saved from the silvas, I call it the tory plant, no matter how you deal with it, its going to hurt and destroy. Really super pleased for your acquisition, I think you've secured a little Bobby Dazzler of land and fruit trees will give you so much sunshine joy forever. Thanks guys!

Thank you! I really enjoyed making this video and must admit I have been watching it a few times as well haha 😂. I’ll investigate the well and ‘reservoir’ when the temperature rises and I need some cooling off. Great analogy, brambles need strict management and repetitive cuts so it can’t damage its surrounding plants.

The blue plastic "pot" that you find on the field is a water container to pick up fresh water from the well and bring home for water drink . My grandfather used to have a small well and i pick up the water on a "pot" like that to bring home the water. On that time country houses doesn't have piped water.

Your new land is a most magical ancient place. Throughout Maarten's work, I kept seeing sheep on the terraces in my imagination. Perhaps I was getting a flashback from a few centuries ago. But then I thought perhaps if you want to, you could buy a breeding pair of sheep to keep the farm "mowed." You could sell the lambs or enter into meat harvesting if that's something you have discussed. I'm sure there are neighbors who could do it for you. (I hope this doesn't bring you or me an avalanche of backlash from vegans out in internet land lol). Great purchase. The land is gorgeous! I also think the reservoir (not the well) was to receive spring water from higher up that seems to be going into the black tube Maarten uncovered. Perhaps the spring is also on this land. That would be amazing. At any rate, congratulations. This offer to buy the land was a providential gift for sure. In Italy where I live, I just sold my house with a few olive tree terraces on the land. I am now trying to find a house needing renovation with much more land within my very modest budget. I am waiting for my own providential "gift" since living in a rental place is giving me crazy dreams haha. Once we have lived in a quiet rural place, it is impossible to adjust to city life again.

Re: your find haul of 'treasures', the last flattened object you couldn't identify is, a salt pig, or 'saleiro' in Portuguese. It could be quite sweet if restored it. You attach these on the wall, with a nail, next to your oven hob/cooker, so you can season the food while you cook. The rusty buckets could be painted and made little plant pots, if you are into twee, which I am. All those fruit trees I say WOW!! Happy days folks. X:)

With brambles, the same as with roses, you get rid of the thorns by lightly gripping the stem with a full hand and then twist that hand around the stem. That way you break all the thorns clean of and create a hold for gripping the stem. That strimmer with the knives worked fine. I have at times also used a hedge trimmer (heggeschaar)

Yes I also really love the walls and terraces. I also really like your idea of making a play/treehouse in one of the olive trees. I’ll start making plans for that after securing the well and reservoir :)

Is it possible to set up wild camping or start classes on simple living off the land with accommodation- you could do 1 twelve week period a year. I think you would both be wonderful at that

Tourism is an industry we would like to stay out of as it is strictly controlled + I don’t feel like I have enough experience to teach others (there are enough of the blind leading the blind type classes around). Maybe in 10 years when the kids are older and we are more established I would feel more comfortable in teaching others. :)

More fruit trees would be nice. You could dry or can some of those “oranges”. Can you grow apricots? They have a strong taste so they would be very good dried. What will you do with the black currants?

I would love to grow more apricots, will have to see if they would do well there. It’s a very mild microclimate with little frost so that gives opportunities for more tropical things

PS: Martin, continuing our last comments about buying more spares than you need, I woke up this morning after a -5ºC night to find a water filter cracked and full of ice, meaning that we have no water on a Sunday.... Luckily, I managed to cobble together a temporary bypass with my "left over" plumbing fittings.

Oh wow, that is not the best start of a day. Last year we had a cracked faucet in the shower due to freezing and now I just make sure there is no water in the lines when it will freeze during the night.

I found that brambles are one of the few things that compost down fairly well in our climate and can be managed easily when cut once or twice a year. I will go over the land once more when all the green brambles have dried out and hope for the best. Cheers, Maarten

There are lots of possibilities for this land. It was obviously productive at one time. Congratulations on acquiring this land! But all my ideas run into labor problems. Anything needs to be tended and harvested. First, I wouldn’t do anything other than maintenance and sorting water for the next year. Then I would approach it from the other end by exploring markets of products that require minimum input. I would explore various forms of the local labor market. My personal dream is to rebuild regional markets and moving away from this „global“ economy. But I think that requires an enormous and daunting engagement and investment, as well as a shift in consumer behavior. It’s nice to dream though.

We try to do things that we can do ourselves and are not dependent on outside help (a lot of people rely on volunteers to run their farms which seems a recipe for disaster in our opinion). This means we try to spread out harvests over the year (honey early june, wine august/september, olives november/december etc). The dream of marketgardening a lot of people have that come here doesn’t really work here, because a lot of people here grow their own veggies and/or can’t afford to pay the price the smaller market gardeners have to charge to make a profit.
@LCamp-cr7fs
@LCamp-cr7fs 2 жыл бұрын
@@ourportuguesehomestead I understand that and agree that the volunteer system has its problems. By labor problem I mean that you are only two people which equates to labor shortage for most of the ideas proposed.

@@ourportuguesehomestead Other than the traditional measures: improving your own harvesting efficiency, help from family, volunteers, seasonal workers, day workers, I have no ideas. I understand that you don’t have much of a local market. You might want to look into wholesalers, although they seem to require minimum quantities. So I am looking at easy crops that keep/travel well. There will be a shortage of sunflower seeds. I think they might grow on your terraces. Another high value crop is the autumn crocus for saffron. In both cases you have not much to lose for trying and have pretty flowers/ spice in the meantime. Having said that, I would not do much in the first year other than securing the water, but improving present revenue streams and harvest, and build relationships with wholesalers and locals to grow income in the future.

excellent work and good purchase. when that two-pronged disc wears out, try to buy a three-pronged disc that is on sale at Agri Loja in Castelo Branco. It's far superior, I recently purchased one and I'm amazed. before I also used one just like this one with two ends.
