Autumn War Flash Game - All Missions Playthrough

Autumn War is a strategy flash game where you fight off hoards of terrifying zombies. You control units of heavily armed soldiers wearing cool helmets with red eyes. The zombies start off slow, and the missions are pretty basic.
It gets difficult quickly though. The weather changes and it's in the zombie's favor. They get faster, and come at you in much larger groups. You have to make many hard choices. When to run away, and even when to sacrifice a unit.
Autumn War 2 is actually also in development 15 years later still! It looks like it needs a lot of work, but you should check out Oreo47's channel on KZbin if you're interested.

For anyone confused at the interface: The green number for both sides, soldiers and zombies, is how many "troops" are on either side. The blue number on your soldiers' side of the window is how accurate your soldiers are. The closer the zombies get and the less your soldiers move, the more accurate they are. The orange number on the right is how close the zombies are. The different commands are as follows: Retreat - soldiers will abandon the battle and sprint fully in the opposite direction. If they reach the edge, they escape the battle. In later missions, the zombies *are* faster than your men. Fall back - your men will walk slowly backwards, if they reach the edge of the screen, they leave the battle. If you've given the order to fire, they will keep shooting, but less accurately. Hold - your soldiers will hold their ground against the zombies, giving them maximum accuracy. Advance - your soldiers will slowly walk towards the enemy. If they have been given the order to fire, they will continue firing. Charge - generally a suicidal move, your men will sprint full speed at the undead, and if given the order to fire, will continue to do so. Different weapons give your troops a longer attack window in the battle map, giving them a longer distance from the enemy when the battle starts. If a zombie reaches a soldier, they'll enter a struggle, the soldier attempting to fight it off with a knife. Usually, the first attempt is successful, but it is unwise to let this happen in the first place. Vehicles can be obtained for squads later on, and can significantly improve a squad's combat effectiveness, but can also drastically slow the squad down if they don't use a road. Retreats also usually leave the zombies not far behind the squad. In fact, if a squad engages a horde too close, they'll immediately break formation and retreat, which can lead to a collapse of your lines due to forced retreats, failing the mission. And this is more just an observation, but the zombies kinda freaked me out as a kid because it was hard to tell how far away they were, and how quick they could move, as well as the fact that they're almost completely silent, unlike most zombies.

If I remember correctly, charging increases the melee effectiveness of your men. Thus, it is best to charge once the zombies are just about to reach them! I also learnt that RPGs cannot hit zombies if they are too close to your men naturally.

@@legend8202 Youre totally right, I once had a regular solider kill 3 zombies in melee on a charge. Generally backwards movement decreases melee effectiveness and forward movement increases melee effectiveness. "Character" units (basically the unit that is in the portrait of the squad) have twice the melee effectiveness.

@@legend8202charging works best when the enemy hordes have already been reduced severely and there are only a few stragglers left. I’d recommend commanding your units to charge if the horde only has 10 zombies. Advancing is the worst option though as it makes it so that the soldiers actually get closer FASTER which means they are more vulnerable to attack, and it doesn’t even increase accuracy.

Right before Flash was set to close, this was one of the games I replayed one last time. Years ago I was never good with the mechanics, but now I found the best strategy was to lure hordes into open terrain, move vehicle/rpg teams to the front for hit-and-run tactics, always engage at the furthest distance possible, and hold ground before charging at the last possible moment to cut down the last of them.

Would be an interesting concept, plus a terrifying concept for a plague. Imagine it infects people and turn them hostile, but males catching the plague would die if they aren't strong enough. Females on the other hand, if they don't resist the plague, which would be almost 100% of cases, don't just die. They are reanimated as killers that either travel as small groups or massive hordes. From what we can see in the game, and I'm only theorizing, the operation theatre is in a massive, "natural" area; lots of ground to cover, need to send out male dominant or male only expeditions to slowly clear out the infected zones, which range from a country to whole continents. Another fact would be the ABSOLUTE necessity to intercept ANY group of infected personnel to avoid any chance of some breaching the containment zones, and even then cleared zones would have to be swiped again with more scrutiny. Not to mention the cost and massive danger of the plague if it reached civilian areas... Damn that gives me an idea for a fic inspired of that game.

@@GamingJunkShop This why i take advantage of the Jeep Infantry they move fast harassing larges infected thinning their numbers and wiping out small ones this will give time for my army to build up their Armor, with right positioning you can secure low casualty rate, this game is ahead of its time Its a Chess type of warfare which we needed in our current game. The creator should have made a sequel instead of the single player one.

Back when Flash was still alive, i kept getting pwned and rekt by the zombies, once i get ahold of the controls i developed my own strategy which i called "Rook's wall" or something like that, it's basically strong units (ones with heavy weaponry or vehicle's) in front while the weaker ones in the back as a support unit if the strong unit falls, the weaker ones who used them as shields can attack the zombird and clean out the rest

I loved the fact that almost every unit is essentially a mechanized infantry, or at least uses combined arms. Line formation is pretty sensible since the threats just shamble, but the added support of an APC and later other vehicles and even mechs is a nice touch. Missed this game.

I've never played this as a kid, I was a scaredy cat back then, but holy shit, THE ATMOSPHERE The mission 1 background has a unique feel to it, it's almost like you can feel the cold air filling your lungs The threat of rapidly but silently approaching hordes that can quickly outmatch your soldiers, the camera panning, the static, the simple but extremely efficient commanding system, everything works so well together, and the name of the game really brings everything together, the eerie and cold name, the season of death, Autumn. Even the Mech that even if out of place, somehow fits perfectly, a last stand and the light at the end of the tunnel. Really, I'd love seeing this come back in the future, with a bigger storyline, more troop diversity and customization and a more polished art (I mean, Madness Combat and Henry Stickmin got Steam Releases, I guess this could as well!), It would be an instant buy for my Steam Account. (also, please someone make an edit of the Mech obliterating Zombies to the sound of Rules of Nature) Edit: I did some research, turns out the creator is still working on Autumn War 2, with a beta release on the way, didn't expect i'd be hyped for a franchise I just learned it's existence like an hour ago

As much as I loved this game, I absolutely despised that last mission. My units just could not for the life of them kill anything until the zombies were right on top of them and they would retreat.

Yep the last mission is brutal, and depends a lot upon the randomized terrain. Your best bet is to use the tank unit. Keep it in the forest and try to engage zombies that are still outside of it. You get a huge accuracy boost. They are the only unit that can wipe out a group of ~30 zombies, besides the walker.

Would literally waste my allowance for the day just to play flash games lol Of all the games they had, GTA San Andreas and Red Alert 2, I went to Y8 and wait for Flash games to load for forever. I only ever saw this game once as a kid while my friend was playing it, never remembered the name of it, kinda thought I had just imagined it. But my God I'm so happy to learn it was real, a flash strategy game is so frickin coooool

this game was literlaly such a foundational part of my love of zombies and paramilitary and apocalypses and shit, i can still hear the soldiers goin "AHHH AAAAAAAAA" from you being a terrible commander (which 6-something year old me was infact)

​@@ARStudios2000right, Autumn War, What does that imply? I can easily understand ones like Con Artist's The Last Stand, Fly Anvil's Decision and Evil Dog's entire of the Dead series, but this one, I don't get it?

@@sonicANDtailsfan157k that's the thing. You're not quite sure what it implies, and looking at the main menu screen, and even the loading screen all you see is red eyed soldiers. The ominous tone comes from exactly that; you don't know, on top of the word "war" so you know some shit is going down.
