Very nice video to show people how much effort there is behind a great image. Its not only going into the woods and doing some clicks. I'm very much enjoying the scouting trips as I feel that you spend more time talking about why you think a certain scene will make a good composition. When the light is good you spend more time (as you should) getting the images. The scouting trips are less pressure and very informative. Thanks for taking us along.

That's great feedback, thank you! I find them much easier to do as there's a lot less pressure. If the conditions are particularly good then I prefer not to film at all but do a retrospective video :)

Hi Simon. Great video and well explained. I agree that woodlands can be chaotic enviornments and its looking for the details that make it interesting! @10:10 into the video I cant help ut get distracted by that tree trunk on the right of the frame. Reminds of a seagull with a long neck going for a bite. Looks like a great place to explore. Really enjoyed watching this. Was relaxing and well put together. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for yet another beautiful video. Your passion and love for woodland photography have been my inspiration for walking my local forests and woodland. It's not nearly the kind of woodland you have around you, but still it give me that much needed peace, quite and relaxation to disconnect from my daily chaos and an opportunity to recharge my batteries. About a year ago I got diagnosed with arthritis, mainly in my ankles and this raised the question about my future abilities doing landscape photography. I had been looking into Woodland photography just very briefly, but found it extremely difficult regarding composition and colours. I had been following several Landscape photographers on KZbin, but the amount of hiking they did got too hard for me. I had to look for something else. As I was searching through KZbin I found your Channel and start following. Strangely I started to find woodland photography a bit interesting and your love and joy somehow infected me. I was on sick leave from work waiting for the medicine to start working, but I manage to make small trips into a local woodland just 5 minutes drive from home. Not long walks, just long enough to get surrounded by trees. those first days I just sat down and looked around, mostly frustrated by the pain, but also because I struggled finding any kind of composition. This went on for about a couple of weeks, then suddenly my eyes started to seek out a tree, a spot of light, or some branches. I started to see patters and texture around me and manage to capture some very weak compositions, but still, I started to get something out from my very short walks, mostly about 50 meters. My love for woodland photography was born and it has been growing ever since. This love have forced me to go out with my camera as often as possible and I'm pretty sure it has become my main medicine against arthritis. Now I can be out in the woodland for several hours scouting and capturing images I love. And the pain? Still there, but it's manageable now, and my brain are occupied with other things than feeling the pain. As for my arthritis, it's something I have to live with the rest of my life, so far I have found a way to live with it through my love for woodland photography. Not sure if others will get the same effect.

That's a wonderful story which resonates with me. It's mostly invisible but I too suffer and in fact I was very sore after shooting this video but the healing properties of woodland photography are profound. It's great to hear that you've also found comfort and a sanctuary amongst trees. Thank you for sharing!

Love your work Simon, I'm always envious (in a good way) of your beautiful woodland images, from trying many times myself I can appreciate it's a true skill to be able to pick out and visualise the compositions you find. I certainly love walking around my local woodland, especially in the early morning before many other people are around. I would like to have a bit more variety closer to home though, it's mainly plantation woodland so normally quite densely packed and not really any old characterful old trees, certainly still a pleasure to walk around but difficult to find compositions in, cant complain too much though as I'm sure one day it will be chopped down and I will miss what I had.

One thing I do need to say is your never alone in an old forest did you happen to notice you had company that old oak at 13mins with the branch broken to the right there's a head/face watching you as clear as day. Many thanks, Michael. It's difficult to tell but as birch often turn early but it very much depends upon the individual tree and woodlands quite close to each other can vary quite dramatically. Fingers crossed :)

Great video as per usual! I was out exploring my local woodland yesterday as part of my new project. I felt the same excitement that you seem to feel in this video. Not much of an oak forest, but the last ice age made the topography kind of wild. One question, how many hours a month goes in to checking Meg for tics? :)

I have often struggled with how to organize scouting images in LR so that I can refer back to them as needed for future shoots. I know that may be too broad a question. Maybe it could even be a video but can you offer any tips for organizing "scouting/go back to" images in LR so that they are triggers for future opportunities?

I tend to use my mobile phone shots as reminders as shown in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpi3mWWFhLWWqas But going through the process of taking an image with my main camera and reviewing it in Lightroom helps me to memorise certain scenes.

A lot of the images you find don't appear to have trails nearby. Do you have gps locations to help find them again?

Sometimes the co-ordinates from mobile phone shots (see this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpi3mWWFhLWWqas ). These are small woodlands so I tend to memorise them.
