i recently picked up a huge unit geiger counter for rockhounding radioactive minerals and i was looking at coming out here sometime! it’s about a six hour drive from seattle, so it would have to be a long trip! i wanted to ask, i’ve seen other people talk about this place and that it really doesn’t have as much autunite to be found as there used to be, i assume that’s true right? also heard that there’s pitchblende there aswell! i really want to go over some time and spend some days hunting some amazing little green guys!

Keeping that level of radiation a foot or two away from your body is probably AOK. I had a bag of hard rock uranium ore in my room as a kid. It was always 6-10 feet away from me up on a shelf. Never did a CPM on it though. Took 3-day exposure xrays photos for a science project, took it to school. BACK IN THE DAY! LOL -- I'd love to know where this is, but I understand...

@k.jespersen61453 жыл бұрын
@@CurrentlyRockhounding Unfortunately, no, I'm a long way from you. However! Fischer Scientific has a really good kit for a student cloud chamber that runs $132, and most grocery stores take orders for the dry ice you'd need to get some good clouding. If you have a number of radioactive sources you want to take a look at, or some experiments in magnetics you want to run, the kit is worth it. Not large, but worth it.

@CurrentlyRockhounding3 жыл бұрын
The more the merrier right? : ) Don't worry I have safe storage for my samples.
@jacobb76082 жыл бұрын
This is not true. Not only does CPM not account for the type/energy of radiation, but 100 CPM of *any* radiation is well below the threshold for safety. Short term exposure to count rates well over 10,000 CPM is safe.
@patricksnyder7724Ай бұрын
@ambkbero2 Bullcrap… totally false. The maximum allowed exposure for mine workers is 5,000 millirem annually. And autunite will only produce alpha radiation so a few centimeters of air or a t-shirt will protect you.
