Cerium oxide has a mohs hardness of 6-7 (unlike aluminum oxide which is mohs 9). Cerium is about as hard as many agates and jaspers, and likely softer than very pure agates like Montana moss agate. Yet it polishes even the hardest of agates beautifully. That is because cerium is a chemical-mechanical polish. It does not (primarily) work by making finer and finer scratches. Instead, it chemically removes silica molecules and redeposits them onto rough (non-polished) areas at a molecular level. In other words, it sort of fills in or glazes over scratches using a process of chemical deposition. The micron size of cerium oxide doesn't matter much. The white cerium is better since it is purer, and purer means a faster and more consistent chemical reaction. It is primarily the purity and not the particle size of the white cerium that makes it superior. **Disclaimer: I am no expert. I could have added "it is my understanding" to each of the above sentences, but that would make it annoying to read. Nevertheless, I have read a lot about how cerium oxide polishes silica, so the above is based on my understanding of good science. I didn't make it up. Lots of scientific articles are available on the subject since cerium is used to polish silicon wafers used to make microchips.

Wow, fantastic build! Do you plan on putting anything over the end of your drain pipe to keep pests out? Do you have any freeze concern? I'm wondering if a slow ice buildup could occur over time.
@CurrentlyRockhounding18 сағат бұрын
I figure they will just get washed out but a screen might help. I'm not really concerned about the freezing with the warm/hot water.

Congratulations on your new workshop! Very well done. I had an unfinished section of my basement “finished” into my studio space. It has 2 rooms, one for lapidary and jewelry making (silversmithing and a lathe for making rings). There are pocket doors so I can close off the second room when doing messy stuff. The other room has a place for making bead jewelry and for photography. This winter’s project is making modular cabinets that are on wheels for using as photography platforms and storage. They can be used together or separately, depending on what I’m shooting. The whole floor I had done with an epoxy-type floor in light gray that is easy to keep clean and find dropped stuff on (usually 😂). I had plenty of electrical sockets put in at a 4’ height so I don’t have to crawl around on the floor trying to plug things in. Right now I have mostly Harbor Freight workbenches, but someday I’d like to put in a similar bench to what you built.

This was a really interesting video. I enjoyed the behind the scenes work. I kept on saying to myself "when is he going to get his shop up and running", I didn't realize the scope of the work. Also, I can't tell you how much I'm learning from your videos. I thank you and your wife very much!

was always told that in europe, the threads aren't tapered like they are in the US, so they have to use a buttload of tape & dope on their stuff. some even use hemp in their threads and dope. sorry you had to deal with that, sucks when you don't have a reputable plumbing supply house in town. you did well though, much better than most homeowners would!
@CurrentlyRockhounding2 күн бұрын
That is for sure correct about the threads, what pain. Thank you! I did the best that I could with what I had available.

Dream shop! Great job. What is your opinion on using water in a stainless trim saw vs oil? Oil is so messy especially for those quick little cuts. I see Kingsley North has water aids. Could I use something like that?😊
@CurrentlyRockhounding2 күн бұрын
Thank you! Personally, I would never, under any circumstance, run oil in a trim saw, it's far too messy and the return on that mess isn't worth it.

@@CurrentlyRockhounding I don't think I see any here but at Paradise Beach, MN they have like the opaque agates they have banding but the layers of banding are opaque mostly, they can have some translucent in it to I suppose. I should prob cut one open to get a better look at it. I just kinda wondered if the layers are opaque and its like an agate maybe its more jasper layers than chancedony.

Well, now I can stop calling you "that kid on Currently rockhounding, I know his wife is Sarah". Yeah, I'm an old guy. These video's are fantastic, you have motivated me to pull out an old "lens grinders wheel" and get it functioning, about 10 hours later started building my own flat lap, pulled out my old Lorton 33a and my wife's central machine double barrel, and get them spinning again, started pulling out huge pillow blocks and tool grade barstock for a rocksaw drive shaft, purchased an old Craftsman table saw from a yardsale for it's massive motor to drive this rocksaw. So, yeah, these videos have seeded a new shop in Virginia, previously we just hunted stream beds and gravel bars to fill the house and yard with stone, now I'm making alterations...

The reel up power? Yes. I didn't know I needed one until I had one. Now I won't be without it. I'm sure you'll enjoy all the new/extra space going from Your shipping container to a garage. We're hoping to move one more time into our "retirement" home, so I'll be doing the same thing at some point. One thing I would question is do you really want your high speed sander right next to your carpet wheel? Unless you have a cover for the polisher. You don't want to cross contaminate your carpet with rock dust. Also, Lapidary is a process. You/we are Lapidists or Lapidarists. I know it sounds weird to say but I had to look it up for one of my videos. I look forward to seeing what else you do with your space. Good luck and have fun.
@CurrentlyRockhounding2 күн бұрын
I love the reel up power cord! I wish you the best of luck with the future home and shop build. You are correct about the high speed sander being right next to the carpet wheel so I have a trash bag cover for it but Sara will sew me up a nice cover for it so it looks better on camera.
