@user-do2ly1qb6b When I was an Aviation Ordnanceman in the Navy, back in the late 80's The G.E. 20mm Vulcan cannons in all the aircraft that had one, were cycled by a 5 hp electric motor (housed in the "reciever" of the gun itself) that also had a (whatdayacallit)electric sparker thingy that lined up with the each of the barrels one at a time has they rotated thru the firing position of the cycle. Rather than an actual firing pin and perscussive type primer. Maybe bleed air to drive some parts of the electrical system but, I wouldn't know. That's more an A E. thing. I'd think they would want the gun to work under all foreseeable conditions....and would thus drive it with primary electrical but... How do you drive a gun with bleed air, anyway?

That scene was like taken out of a movie. No, I take that back. Better than a movie. Legend!
You mentioned the X-32 being the ugliest plane of all. Fun piece of history: During the JSF program, the competing crews gave each of their opposing team's planes a nickname. The F-35 got the nickname "Fat Amy" due to its ever increasing weight and cost. In return, The X-32 got the nickname "Monica" due to that gaping air intake reminiscent of a presidential intern.

G/S - Like you, the Harrier was my first DCS purchase (along with the MiG-21), primarily because back in the early 1990s, I wanted to join the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm and fly Harriers. I ended up porting over to space technology but so this was the closest I ever got to flying it. It's not the same - but still. It's a legendary aircraft, especially if you consider who in the Falklands, the Royal Navy were totally outnumbered by all types of Argentinian aircraft.

If you flare while rolling, it helps divert the missiles a lot. I did that last night on DCS, and it made 2 missiles miss my plane. Then, when I stopped rolling while flaring, I got hit. There's something about that maneuver of flaring while rolling that helps dodge missiles. I saw Maverick do that in Top Gun 2 and he also made a missile miss.
@potatofartsquad Жыл бұрын
The more dispersed the flares are, the more targets the missile may hit, and so it reduces the possibility of you getting hit instead.
@anngo4140 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, Mav and team were flaring against radar guided SAMs too, it's just movie magic when it comes to that. But I do believe if you saturate the area with more countermeasures, you're more likely to survive, yes.

Supposedly the technique was used to good effect in the Falklands war, so it did get used in real combat at some point. Crazy for the pilots to come up with it, but it takes knowing the aircraft well enough for those stupid tricks they can get away with.
@GrowlingSidewinder Жыл бұрын
actually I was reading an article on this not too long ago, turns out viffing was never used in the falklands conflict, it was something the media constantly talked about and claimed was going on over there but was in reality just hype and the media had no idea what it was saying. Real Harrier pilots from that conflict are on record saying they never used it, because they didn't need to.
