There is nothing fancy about recording with OBS. It's even easier than streaming IMHO. You just hit record instead of "Start streaming" and it records video to your local drive. Very useful for desktop grabs (both PC and Mac). It even utilizes hardware encoding of GPUs.

You can do better than 1080p on a 1080, I'm on a 1660 super (very close to a 1070, but with more ram though I believe), and edit in 2704 x 1520 60fps (H264 GoPro footage) no problem. I don't need too many effects but have to track in fusion and the colour page, playback is fine even without changing the playback res, but sometimes change the timeline res just to be nice to my PC. I'm sure I'd be ok in 4k, but definitely fine with playback/timeline res halved or quartered.

Alex, thanks as always for the informative videos but PLEASE do something about the flickering yellow light over your left shoulder. If it can't be fixed with Deflicker (which works for me when I throw your video into a timeline), then the problem might lie with your camera settings. If your system is set to 50Hz then shutter speed should be either 50 or 100 (twice your frame rate) or 180 if you're using shutter angle. If this still doesn't work then your lamp may be operating at a different frequency. Sometimes dimmer switches or colour changers can affect the output frequency and cause the "beating" we see in your videos. I'll also happily contribute to a crowdfund on Kofi to buy you a new lamp if it comes to that :)

Really interesting to hear about the new AV1 codec, which until now I hadn’t heard of. It would be really good if you did a video about that codec. Is it purely for export or is it likely to find its way onto cameras? Which affordable graphics cards will support it with acceptable performance in resolve? What’s the advantage if any of an AV1 file uploaded to KZbin with KZbin compression? Or is it more likely to be of benefit for broadcast use? You get the idea.
@NathanPorter2 жыл бұрын
eventually it might become a thing in camera. It an open standard that doesn't require licensing like h.264/h.265. It's designed more for a delivery format, but anywhere that h.265 is used, it would be suitable. I believe resolve also supports av1 on intel arc which are like $350. It's going to take time for more hardware/software/services to bring support. KZbin does actually distribute av1 on some of their more popular videos and the main benefit is bandwidth, so if you have slow upload speeds if you can reduce your file size without reducing quality it means you don't have to wait as long for an upload, or if your users have low bandwidth they can have better quality at any given bitrate.

Therefore the question: Davinici Resolve for Fusion uses the GPU or more the CPU?

@@YHK_YT Not through DaVinci Resolve. If you're comfortable using command line tools, you can most likely use ffmpeg encoder commands directly, in conjunction with a DLL/plugin for nVidia AV1 encoding (I'm don't specifically know what exists, but probably does), and that'll do it. Of course this means right out of DaVinci Resolve you need to export something else to composite your video. Maybe ProRes? And then you re-encode for space or whatever to AV1. Far slower, but if you really need AV1 as your end result, it is still technically free. To be clear, I'm a software engineer and fully aware and capable of using command line tools, but I don't dive that deep into learning tools like that if I don't have to.

I see, I’m not trying to use av1 just because of the low file sizes but rather because of how efficient it is compared to h264, since it requires less data to achieve the same resolution, but I do also want it to use the gpu, and if that isn’t compatible then I don’t mind using another format/codec so long as it’s supported in resolve and other platforms, along with the default media players on devices, yes av1 encoding and decoding hardware only recently became available on consumer hardware (at least more commonly), but older devices can do software encoding, which is not that good but if KZbin will convert it then I don’t think that’s a problem, same with other platforms, I’m aware of how to use ffmpeg and I have used it and still do but never expected a resolve plugin for that, sounds interesting and I’ll definitely look into that, tho I also wanted the gpu to render my timeline since that’s still going to be a problem, and if that isn’t an option for av1 then I don’t mind changing to another format/codec just so I can do hardware acceleration, my timeline resolution is already 1080p 60 and isn’t my problem, but rather when I use fusion, which I tend to do often, that’s where it starts chugging after a while which is very annoying and makes me want to avoid it as much as possible whenever I can, I’m not sure if there are any hardware supported codecs or formats tho, haven’t tho I’m aware that you can only use up to 1 gpu in resolve unless you’ve got the studio version, so I’d assume there has to be somewhere for it to be used

I really need to improve my setup for keying green screen, how much of a difference do you think the 4080 or 4090 would make? Thanks

Just discovered that AV1 export with Nvidia is a studio only feature. Sad.

What about playback? I care most about whether or not I have to sit there waiting to create proxies because it can't play 10bit 422 footage back at full resolution. Or even with proxies created, is it going to stutter playback when I add fusion effects and noise reduction? Or am I just going to have to switch to Mac :/
