Locked On Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche had their chances, but couldn't break through against the Dallas Stars, who an old nemesis in Matt Duchene found the back of the net to end the series in six games.
The Avs seemed to find their game over the past two games, but it was too little too late as they needed so many things to go right for them for three consecutive games against a very strong Stars team.
So the question is what happens now? There are many questions around this Avalanche team heading into the off-season.
A lot to discuss so tune in, subscribe and enjoy!

I was honestly in awe of the defense and goaltending by both teams, just 2 elite teams absolutely locked in. Dallas is just a monster right now and Shesterkin going nuts might the only way to stop them. Congrats to Duchene, if it had to be anyone very poetic that its him.

Dallas fan here saying that was a great game. All the respect, and I wonder if the high speed offense y'all have with the best home game record met its match with the strongest defense abs best record on the road team. Hence why the game was so good and your players just got tired in OT. Meaning it's just a war of attrition.

Dallas is so good, so well coached. I hated watching this series and yea for a non dutchy fan that was even more a stinger. It was inevitable I feel. You could just see Dallas was not going to let this one slip away they had the heart I guess. Avs coulda used LoC, Val and our Capt Landi that's pretty clear now. We also need some more players like Manson, Colton etc... Seems like it takes one guy like Benn and we get pushed around. Maybe it was a confidence thing idk. The mack benn stardowns were gnarly lol

Also, it hurts me to read some of the comments on some videos by other Dallas fans, I'm sorry you have to deal with those, they are a minority (I hope, otherwise I'd be ashamed of being a Stars fan). Thanks, guys for another great year of coverage and thoughts. I really appreciate you both and value your opinions. Last year I was glad it was over because the boys were just too beat up from the cup run and we just didn't have it. This year I am glad it is over because I am exhausted and tired of trying to figure out why so much talent, good coaching, etc. Just didn't seem to care about showing up for important games, you right how we ended the regular season caught up with us. For some reason, Mikko seems to be the poster child for me on this bad attitude. I have never seen a player his size lose his feet more, or get brushed aside by people half his size, over and over again. I have a new nickname for him Staypuff Marshmellow Man. I can't remember the last time he got in trouble because he put a hit on someone yet he is " Power forward"? Right, whatever. If he is Moose then he is Bullwinkle. Go Panthers and E. Rod. 🦁

After that game, it’s obvious that the Avs don’t have the depth to truly compete with a team like Dallas. When you can’t spread the ice time more evenly to all of your forwards, you aren’t going to have your legs in a game like this. The avs were clearly the more tired team in OT and they had a week off before this series.

Dallas may very well win the cup this year and be contenders for a while with their strong young core. However, their depth will also be tested when contracts come up and they become more top heavy. This is the challenge of continued success in the salary cap era.

I liked how the Avs got tougher with Wood, Trenin and Duhaime, as that seems to be the direction the league is going if you want to go deep in the playoffs. But it just didn't happen this year. Avs biggest issue was in goal, that was answered. Front office did make this team better, some of the moves made, really didn't cost future of the team in the win now window. Just like last year, its goes to key guys injured and/or missing. Not blaming it on anyone, but a little more luck who knows. I feel the superstars were playing a little to safe, playing like 3rd liners, which messed up some of time of attacks. Players weren't sure if superstars weren't going to make a play or dump it in. So it cost a delay on puck retrieval.. Most of the chances came from the 3rd line, just no finish. Take another step back and hope for a better season next year. Have great summer!!

We did get unlucky with Tartar and Johanson. Drouin works like a charm and I belive they will find a way to keep him. With Val I wonder if the NHL will allow Avs to do something. Since this has never really happened. I also think asking the players to welcome him back is crazy. The players may not want him around anymore. Am I the only one who thought Walker was kinda a risk? Yes he can skate and shoot but we need shut down D we have enough skating D.

100% delay of game. Weak weak goalie interference call. The boys looked so gassed in OT. Dallas had the Avs number and were just better and more consistent for longer. Great learning experience for the Avs. I feel like if we had started our season with the team we ended with, our season would have looked much different. Nate looked determined after that loss, I expect a ton from him next season. The off season will be interesting to follow. Just a matter of finding the right parts. My quick thoughts on what the off season might look like. 1. i bet that they negotiate a contract settlement with Val. it will cost something against the cap, but not as much as a buy out. let's call it $2mil next year. that leaves them just about $14 mil in cap space which includes Landy and LOC both playing. 2. sign Mittelstadt, lets assume that comes in at 5 years $5 mil, that takes us down to $9 mil 3. Defense, promote Malinski full time and sign/promote 2 more league min players (let's just call them JJ and Caleb Jones for now). that's $2.5 mil more leaving $6.5 mil left. 4. assuming Landy and LOC are ready to play that leaves 5 slots to fill. let's start by putting Kovalenko, Wagner, and Foudy, in 3 of them for $2.5 mil total leaving $4 mil to play with. 5. here's where it gets tricky. maybe sign Trenin at ~$2 mil? Would Drouin stay for ~$3mil? Duhaim at ~$1 mil? might Callum Ritchie be able to make the jump from Juniors or will he have to go back to the OHL for another year there which he doesn't need? Do they maybe try to trade Manson and find a cheaper option in that slot?

Goal tender interference is not solely whether a player is in the crease. A player can stop a goalie from making a play outside of the crease. In this case Duchene bumped Geogiev and ended up tying up his stick so he could not easily get to his right. “This rule is based on the premise that an attacking player’s position, whether inside or outside the crease, should not, by itself, determine whether a goal should be allowed or disallowed. In other words, goals scored while attacking players are standing in the crease may, in appropriate circumstances be allowed. Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal;”

But finishing with under .900 and with a GAA of basically 3.00 (dropped just below because of the overtime game, was a little above all series)which for the record are his NORMAL STAT LINES. We weren’t ever going to win the cup. This team can’t be expected to score 4+ goals EVERY game in the post season

Oddly enough, i think if the avs are able to keep most of this roster while also somehow being able to have landy, LOC, and val come back (and stay back in.) i think this team can be pretty solid. 1st line being Mac,rant, and val doesn't sound bad. 2nd line could be landy, lehky, mittlestat Drouin could fit in either the 1st or 2nd line when needed imo. 3rd line is where i think it gets tough like there's colton and LOC. and im not sure who we could put with them right now. Maybe lehky if the depth is good enough. Same with the defense. You could fill in roughly 3/4 of the roster confidently. But that 4th line im not sure what to do with it at all. And if georgiev gets the ball rolling next season like he did in the playoffs. As far as im concerned, we have our guy. Plus who knows, maybe he's got another gear and gets a bit better. Im very optimistic about him right now. But i still wanna know what annunen can do. So give him a couple more starts next season. Oh and finally, work on consistency. As lets be honest this team was up and down all season. And thats what we saw in the playoffs. Great 1st round barely good enough 2nd round.

I loved how the Avalanche played in this second round of the playoffs. The Avalanche need desperately a better group of players to play in the 3rd and 4th line just like what the Dallas Stars have. The team needs to see some home grown players instead of finding talent in the free agency pool. Val Nichuskin is a cancer on the team. Should Val return to the team then you will see the locker room turn toxic. Yes Landeskog will return but his offensive numbers will not return. I am happy with how this playoffs ended . Thank you Awesome Sauce for helping the Avalanche this Playoff season.

@@bafriesen i think our backend is the envy of the league. Makar, Toews are all world. Best pairing in the NHL when used together. Manson brings a physical element while being extremely efficient at moving the puck, Loved his game this year. Sammy G is less physical for sure but he's also a way above average puck mover. I felt Walker was really effective for us since the pick up, blends that puck moving physical style well. Can’t win ‘em all I guess 😢 Guess the theme for this season was consistently inconsistent Thoughts now into the off-season Lands I think is a bit more cut and dry, he’s either back for game one and all is ok. If not then the convo of a C needs to be had. I know we have plenty of leaders in the room but having the overall leader will help. FYI I’m banking on Landy being back. Now Val……….its unanimous we all wish him the best and hope he gets the help he needs. But from purely business, can he be trusted by front office? Even some of the team eluded to it. Would they want him back? It’s going to be a lot for front office to handle. One question I have about it. Val is suspended for 6 months minimum and which time he has to enter the programme. Does that mean he wouldn’t even be able to go back home? Appreciate you guys being there all season long, it ended too quickly

is it possible to buy gabe out , let him heal , then he could resign for a lower amount like the min lol since he got paid , is that legal ? cause that would free up alotta cap space for us , not sure it is legal but hey its thought lol

They can't buy him out in the sense his contract just goes away. If u buy out a player his contract remains on the cap for double the length of his deal, but at a less amount.

It’s naive to put Val in lineups for next year . I don’t think avs fans are understanding psychology or addiction. First psychology - you have to be 105 percent focused mentally for this pinnacle of hockey where the game is near perfect . Losing a key player to addiction for a second time deja vu is a psychological harpoon that is nearly incompatible with winning this cup , you just can’t have any major emotional blow when the endeavor requires laser sharp focus. Second is addiction - his substance abuse knocked him out of two playoffs. Getting right back into hockey and playing in another Stanley cup will almost be certain to relapse again . His risk will be so high that it is almost certain in a person that did it twice . The only way to get him through a Stanley cup would be to require a chaperone and curfew for the entire cup .

ur way off about val, hes done, number one cant they cancel his contract over "breach of contract" if not so, then theyll have to bite the bullet and trade him off at a loss, no one way in hell after how they gave him a glorious chance after how wild the first thing he did was, that they will give him another chance when he pulled that off in second round of playoffs, and prety much destroyed any chance that the avs had at moving forward in playoffs, second round in nhl is no joke u need 2 not forget that its very expetnional to get there especialy these days with the parity

Most likely, they can terminate on breach of contract. Most sports contracts have a conduct detrimental to the league and other player misconduct clauses that allow for a split in this kind of situation.

@@joshtracy4441 Crap is right, you obviously read my message wrong. I am no fair weather fan🙄. I have followed the AVS for almost a decade. My comment was about not wanting to listen to the players get ripped and insulted. Not that I am down on the team, I want them to recover from this setback and have a good season. What I heard was a bunch of insults and falling all over the Stars team. I chose to stop listening because of that.
