You hit the nail on the head with “linear being used as a pejorative”. Every single game doesn’t need to be a 40-plus hour long open world game. Some of us don’t have the time and just want a linear 8-10 hour game with a good story. And don’t get me started about crafting being shoehorned into every game now.

I'm so glad you enjoyed Covert Ops/Chase the Express. Honestly, it might be the most underrated PS1 game ever. "Chase The Express" aka Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn has one of the most amazing and action packed intros in PS1 history. I absolutely love it in all its cheezyness and horrifying human faces. The graphics are indeed just a 360° panorama mapped onto a sphere where the camera can freely pan around from a fixed point. I really like this engine and think it's a good spot inbetween "true 3D" and "fixed camera".

Extermination is one of my favorite survival horror games. Its always faulted for its voice acting and story but I think people forget what games were like at that time. They really did a great job of blending horror and action, giving you an unlimited amount of ammo for smaller enemies but making you conserve for bigger ones. Also I enjoyed the weapon customization which was a unique feature at the time. Good level design and really satisfying controls. It was like a horror platformer in some ways.

So happy to see Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn on there. It’s a fun game (ignoring the best ending needs requirements) that mixes OG Resident Evil and OG Metal Gear Solid right down to weird setup for a train and the ripped from the headlines like plot. I highly highly advise people to check it out! Thanks Avalanche for mentioning it!

Chaos Break's corridors with those "Lv 3" secured doors and some of the rooms remind me a lot of the original Metal Gear Solid, aesthetically.

Chaos Break is £80 on ebay. Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn is called Chase the Express in UK, I loved it. And can be picked up for between £5-£10 on ebay.

Will there be a retrospective about all your videos throughout the years? *thinking emoji* Love your content! I haven't even watched the entire video but I know it'll be another worthwhile sitdown.

Thanks for covering Overblood. I always loved that game. It's not a good game but I see the gem underneath it's rough exterior and creaky wheels.

The director of "The city of lost children" (Jean-Pierre Jeunet) made a previous movie called "Delicatessen" wich is also a great movie with similar vibes. In the game there is a reference to this. See 27:45. He also made "Alien: ressurection" later...

I have hidden away in my mums attic all my old games magazines. I remember one having a big piece on Covert ops before it's release, I remember one of its selling points was that it was on a train. I'm going to have to root them all out for historical sake. I have hundreds of ps1 demo disks included with them.

I've spent most of the late 2000s searching for unknown and underrated action games for the PS1, and I gotta say, Covert Ops might be the best one I found. Graphics and the gameplay are really good, but I recommend playing on easy the first time, because ammo is really scarce, and you'll miss a lot of shots until you get the hang of it.

Thank you for mentioning, how weird it is that "linear gameplay" has become a derogative term. Absolutely nothing wrong with linear gameplay as long as the game is good. Even story-driven games can be linear, if the story is gripping.

The Resident Evil clone I loved was Ghosthunter. My friend lent it to me once and I really enjoyed it. It did remind me of Ghostbusters a bit (name and how you captured ghosts) but it was a lot of fun. In fact, because of it I sought out similar games and ended up getting Resident Evil Code Veronica.

Back in the day Something Awful had an article on Blue Stinger that describes the intro to the game as follows: "A few zillion years ago, a meteor fell and hit the Earth, killing all the dinosaurs and moderately wounding Dick Clark." Also, Jon St. John (AKA Duke Nukem,) did voice work for the game and he described it as one of the most torturous gigs he ever did. The voice director was Japanese and couldn't speak a lick of English so he couldn't direct the voice actors worth a damn. St. John said he had to do over 1000 takes of just reading the game's title because the director was never satisfied but couldn't/didn't offer any direction on how he wanted the take to sound and instead just said the name. Jon tried to imitate the director but again that didn't work so the take that made it into the game was a splice job of two different takes.

Really want to thank you for your Extermination video from back in the day. I discovered your channel while looking up works inspired by or slightly related to The Thing, and I'm almost certain that the game features the earliest shoulder-switching of a rifle that I ever saw, albeit in a cutscene.

I'm thrilled to see Soul of the Samurai included. It's one of my all-time faves and I preferred it to Onimusha, despite that being a better game graphically and mechanically. I am surprised Run Like Hell didn't show up though.

Thanks Jared, for doing all of these RE clones by the way! Not only did you open up my horizons on obscure overlooked games, but some true hidden gems in there in this series! I never thought my PS1 library would expand that much, but thanks to your RE clones videos, I definitely picked up a lot of good looking games that have my interested I cant wait to play! This is going to certainly keep me busy anyways until the PS5 becomes more available someday and I loved going back a few generations to find even more hidden gems. With that being said, I cant wait to hear your thoughts on the Disaster Report games even though they didnt make the cut for RE clones. If anyone has any interest in a RE clone, definitely check those games out!
