Avalon Airshow 2015 - Part 2
Ok, So two thing's on this. First Sorry for this upload being almost half a year after the event, Lost the video files on an old external HDD.
Secondly there is no rendering issue here, The only camera I could get at the time was a Sony handicam, Pal format so only 25fps with a maximum resolution of 720i. I did what I could to clean up the video but its the best I could do. For future airshow videos I think I'll be looking into a 1080p 30/60fps camera. Regardless, I hope you enjoy!

Back when i was a kid i was lucky enough to be allowed to ride in the Hudson bomber (At that time it was the only one flying in the world, not sure if that's changed at all). to this day its the only plane i have ever ridden in. was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. Sure is nice to see it still going, thanks Magz!

From christchurch NZ, we had our very own air show right after the earthquake happened. Got back from school after about 4 hours travel through the flooded and destroyed city, on a route that normally takes 20 mins, to watch from the port hills an orion and another four engined plane possibly a hercules flying around. And then the next day LAV's turned up at my local school with water.

fine looking lad you got there Magz...I remember my first air show with my first son at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, SUPER fun and the look on the young ones eyes when the F16s and F18 were doing their demos was worth the sun burn I got that day...plus the flyby with the B2, B1B, F117 and a F22 was pretty much one of those wow moments...my favorite? the bloody Spitfires, Mustangs and other WW2 warbirds that were there...good stuff!

I am pretty sure I went to one of these, or another airshow down here in Adelaide. But this was over 4-6 years ago. I really need to go again as my knowledge and passion for planes, especially war planes has increased massively lol. I used to probably just be like, cool plane, sounds loud = nice.

Hey Magz, take it directly from a USAF member, recently turned vet. Most likely the reason why the RAAF does have it is because the F-16 engine gives out at all and the pilot can't restart the engine quick enough, the jet turns into the worlds biggest lawn dart. This is a grip in the USAF right now.

Totally agree, air shows make for a great experience. Maybe one you should consider (money allowing) is the Reno Air Races in Reno, Nevada (USA). I am living in Europe but I try and get there every year, its totally amazing to see air racing for real (not that Red Bull stuff). There are many classes the Unlimited Class being the top where you get to see highly modified P-51's racing Bearcats and Sea Furies, its truly awesome. Sadly I can't make it this year due to work commitments but I will be there next year come what may!

Ukranianolo Yes I know, It also puts the control of some of the most powerful weapons ever created in the hands of a computer that has no feelings, emotions or true capacity to think on its own. It just has programming, Programming that can be flawed. Do a little research on how many civilians have been killed in active war zones since drones where rolled out, Keep in mind that the number was so high that the US reclassified the term combatant to every person over the age of 14 within its war zones so they would no longer have to report civilian deaths. Now take another look at the global hawk and realize that a drone that size would be able to carry a small nuclear weapon. I like to think of myself as a pretty modern guy into the latest tech but I think I'll take the well trained pilot over the computer that has a habit of hitting weddings with air to ground missiles thanks.
@MagzGTV
@MagzGTV 9 жыл бұрын
***** A pilot can directly control modern drones however modern drones are also able to act autonomously. The Global hawk is able to take off, land and fly a pre-programmed route, Identify targets, Divert from its programmed route to engage in surveillance before returning and it is able to do all of this without a pilot involved. Predator drones can also maintain flight, Target and attack identified targets without a human in control if set to do so although I believe they still need a human pilot to take off and land however I could be wrong there.

Magz what you called the Globalhawk was in fact a Triton UAV, its the naval version of the Globalhawk. There was a globalhawk there but it was parked behined two F22s also those kids were RAAF Cadets (i think i was behined the canberra at the time you were filming it)
@MagzGTV
@MagzGTV 9 жыл бұрын
+Aussie_Mofo No it's a GlobalHawk, Its just painted in Naval colors. Look at the leading section of the wing. The give away is the Triton has reinforcements at the wing root that make it bulkier than the GH along with a de-icing rail that runs the length of the wing. The Globalhawk lacks both the visible differences.

That global hawk is currently in the process of putting my airframe from my time in the service (EP-3 ARIES II) out of business. Its honestly more practical in every way for the mission it executes, but its also a bit odd and unsettling that the machine that helped make me who i am today will be nothing but a memory soon, replaced by a cold lifeless robot thats flown and crewed by people with XBOX controllers. I wonder if theyll let them wear gold wings on their chest... The selfish nostalgia in me hopes not...

@solreaver83
@solreaver83 9 жыл бұрын
The RAAF primary role is for the defence of Australia. Up until the purchase of the f-35 purchasing a plane had to meet a high level of multi purpose roles. it needed long range the ability to strike with heavy multi role payloads and a high survivability estimation. f16 are too heavily single role and was the reason they were rejected when the raaf was introducing f-18's. This is a whole module in the RAAF officer qualifications.

The F-16 can do all that, maybe not in 1 single F-16 but lets say you want to bombard someone, 1 F-16 can carry 4 GBU or JDAMs and 2 Sidewinder wile a 2ª F-16 carrys 4 AMRAAM and 2 Sidewinder

You can't see the point of having no pilot in warplanes because of low large they are? I can't see the point OF having a pilot. With the removal of pilots from planes we remove a limiting factor in both duration and durability. Pilots on the ground don't have to land to change personnel and don't have to deal with super high g's that can be dangerous to someone. This means planes can last longer with higher performance.
@MagzGTV
@MagzGTV 9 жыл бұрын
+Woofdeath13 Indeed, It also means that there is no longer a person between the military officials ordering attacks and the people dieing. For examples of how this is a problem do a little reading into how many civilian weddings and gatherings have been struck by drones killing thousands of non combatants in the middle east. Why are they not reported? Well according to US rules of engagement in the middle east every non child is considered to be a combatant so when they accidentally hit a wedding with a air ground missile they don't need to report civilian deaths. Having a human in the cockpit tends to act as a buffer for such things as in most cases a pilot will double check its target before going weapons free, Drones will just fire killing what every they are told too, Regardless of if its a terrorist gathering or a mothers club meeting. I would rather a sky filled with inefficient pilots than efficient drones.
@Woofdeath13
@Woofdeath13 9 жыл бұрын
MagzTV I'm not knowledgeable enough in politics to debate that. Id expect drones to have people sitting behind the controls, someone has to input what its supposed to do. I guess until its regulated more its as shady as you say.
@MagzGTV
@MagzGTV 9 жыл бұрын
***** There are people behind the controls but the drones hunt targets autonomously. To describe it, Lets take a look at a wedding, A large group of people gathered in a small area, generally loud and gathered around an alter or stage area. Compare that to any military or rebel gatherings, A large group of people gathered in a small area, generally loud and gathered around a pedestal or stage area. When a human pilot is hunting for targets to attack and sees a wedding he can identify it as a wedding and will continue his sweep being aware that the wedding is not a threat. (U.S. pilots have been known to perform small aerobatic maneuvers over weddings as a gift to the lucky couple, A mini airshow). The drone on the other hand sees a large group of people gathered in a small area around an alter or stage and it fits the programmed perimeters of a military target, it will then automatically lock ground attack ordnance on the target before requesting permission of its operator to attack. It chills my heart to know a predator drone was flown over the states in 2013, Unarmed but set to sweep for targets as a test of its programming. It identified Kindergartens, Junior high-schools, Collages, and Hospitals as well as weddings, churches and sporting events ranging from children's little league events to major league baseball events all as being military targets,
@Woofdeath13
@Woofdeath13 9 жыл бұрын
MagzTV I have mixed feelings about it. Being broad to find anything that isn't calm isn't a bad thing in itself. Im sure a drone pilot gets the same punishment for killing kids as a normal one does. Not knowing how serious a task lock on is it could be a simple task for the drone like loading a program is to a normal computer. If its not affecting performance tracking that thing why not track it.
@MagzGTV
@MagzGTV 9 жыл бұрын
***** My feelings are very unmixed on this. If the drones programming can't tell the difference between a school full of children and a hostile force then drones are not ready to be armed and used in a shooting war.
