Audio only example of each of the currently available filter carts. R:OTA, SEM, and Ladder Filter. Added compression because the volume variations are extreme between filter carts.

They all sound great! The R:OTA seems like a more extreme version of the TB-303, which makes sense since they're both Roland.

That "ladder filter" is standard moog style transistor ladder?

Bah... I'm not as interested in the ladder, but... completeness?

That's the coolest thing. What a good idea to have in simple plug in filter cartridges! All of them sound amazing

Thanks for this valuable service to Avalon owners. Anxious for the Wasp filter. Love my Avalon.

I noticed that there is a dial on the back of the SEM, does it morph between lowpass, notch, and high-pass? That's how the multimode knob works on other Oberheim synths, right?

redirishmanxlt yup it does

Thanks! One more question if it's not to much to ask, do the slide times work correctly on your Avalon? On mine, if I select 1, 3 or 4; there is no difference in the slide time. Button 2 is different, it's longer than the other 3 which seem to be the accurate TB-303 time. Essentially I have two slide time settings, when I should have 4. Does your Avalon do this?

redirishmanxlt I'll check over the weekend and get back to you. I don't think I've altered the slide times but will try

We're waiting. LOL.

Acid Man - What about yours, do you have 4 distinct slide times? BTW I know that the slide time is per-step not global.

just like reading the BOM from a synth like this, isnt for anyone. a MCU for like $25 doing the sequencing and envelopes (programmers on freelance make your dreams come true for less $$), optocoupler + midi jacks for max $7 parts for 2 VCOs with waveshapers for $15-20, parts for filters (depends which one of those cartriges you want from $5 to $10 for ladder to $50 for that SSM cause of the $45 for the chip itself), VCA parts could be harder to find if you want the original BA662 for like $30-40 or you can make one yourself in discrete fashion for a couple bucks. the PCB of this size would be around $40 (for one piece, if you get bulk order, its a couple bucks in china). you will pay most for the pots, jacks but mostly that cool looking CNC-cut frontplate (around $150?) or you could make your own from pre-cut aluminium sheets for again a couple bucks. well from the rest of the aprox $600 (with the most expensive parts of the above) from profit you calculate like $30 an hour for engineer and you have 20 hours left, which you really dont need that much to build such a thing with all pieces on the table and with a homebrew reflow oven. yea you pay for the software a bit more than 1k (anyway you pay for it just once) but assuming this unit doesnt have a dotmatrix LCD, the software should be straightforward and be able to program it yourself with a bit of learning and patience. a lot of people started doing this cause its fun to build your own cause it aint that hard ^_^

Chmara Alex I'm paying for the fact a boutique company with a passion for this type of instrument have gone ahead and produced it. The majority of people want to make music not learn electronics. But well done if you can produce something as well built as this

Kevin Roberts sure thing, its good to support the maker... as long as prices are correct. sometimes i wonder how does korg manage to pay all those people. cause if you ask people in eastern europe (let alone 3rd world), they will say you're crazy to pay so much for such a thing. if westerners can afford it, it doesnt mean the price is right for such a easy-to-make synthesizer... what got me and others into music electronics was the fact that poor countries could only dream of playing on moogs & co. so we would improvize synths out of VHS, satellite receivers and stuff then with beginning of internet we had access to all kind of japanese synth schematics. and the rest is history
